Berlin, Dec 6 (Ians) The timing of the resignation of one of Germany’s highest-ranked football officials might have come as a surprise to many football fans.
However, it was no shock that 54-year-old Oliver Bierhoff took the responsibility for the second group exit at a World Cup within four years and a disappointing Euro 2020.
Critics mounted up on the former striker, who scored the golden goal in the Euro 96 final, but failed to create stability off the pitch following Germany’s 2014 World Cup win.
The departure of the 70-cap former AC Milan forward opens doors for an inevitable re-launch of German football’s struggling development structures.
The coming days might show how far things go as national coach Hansi Flick seems under similar pressure.
Leading positions regarding the national team’s management need to be filled, and the association’s academy requires new input, to say nothing of a new Sporting Director.

Berlin, Oct 13 (Ians) The outcome of the 2022 FIFA World Cup is unpredictable and remains a grab bag, said Germany’s 2014 world champion Philipp Lahm.
“You haven’t got a clear favorite from Europe as the top teams seem to currently struggle and deal with various difficulties,” the 38-year-old former German team captain told Xinhua in an interview.
Nevertheless, European teams and South American favorites such as Brazil and Argentina are going to battle things out. When it comes to taking the football crown, the former defender added, “I am sure about that.”
Despite a well-oiled qualification performance, it remains uncertain how the five-time world champion Brazil and Argentina will perform when meeting strong European teams, the 2013 Champions League winner stated.
“They have done a great job in the qualification, but a World Cup is about meeting the best,” Lahm said.

Berlin, May 18 (Ians) Anger is brewing among fans of German football club Bayern Munich following the departure of head coach Hansi Flick and icons such as David Alaba, Jerome Boateng and Javi Martinez.
The anger is being directed at the designated chairman of the club, Oliver Kahn, and sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic, who have been accused of jeopardising the club's motto "Mia san Mia" (We are what we are), reports Xinhua.
Bayern has more than 358,000 enrolled members and 4,500 fan clubs.
Fans say that Salihamidzic had turned the motto into "Me-myself-and I".
The fans have also started targeting new Bayern coach, 33-year-old Julian Nagelsmann, who, they say, is the reason behind the latest departure of assistant coaches Miroslav Klose and Hermann Gerland.
"How can it be that there is no space for the fans' biggest heroes?" a fan asked on social media.

Full backs have the strangest duties in any football team. You can get along fine without ploughing major money into superstars, but a pair of top full backs can transform your team into a stinging force. They can be used to defend, support when the pressure is off, or go into full-blown attack mode to inject some pace and width into the team.
World class right backs are an endangered species right now, though there are still plenty of top options such as Philipp Lahm and Dani Alves. Then you have the likes of Pablo Zabaleta and Branislav Ivanovic who have been tremendous but haven’t made the same impact this season.
Still, all of those players will take an immense bid and even more ludicrous wages to land, but why bother with them when you can invest in younger models and watch them flourish into immense talents.

The Allianz Arena is a nest filled to bursting with talent as Bayern Munich continue to rule the Bundesliga with an iron fist. They may have been somewhat overshadowed by Barcelona last season, but you can never count out the German champions.
A huge reason behind their success is possessing an immense squad. If one player goes down, an impeccable replacement is usually fit and raring to step in. Bayern can rotate their entire team and still crush opponents at the highest level, while Pep Guardiola has proven his willingness to deploy mind-boggling team selections – to varying effect.
His bold move to attack, attack, attack against Barca in last season’s Champion’s League Semi-final proved costly, but that didn’t shake the Spanish maestro who lined up against Bayer Leverkusen with Zero centre backs in the starting XI. They went with a bizarre 3-3-...

In terms of football, the 21st century has been magnificent. The game has continued to grow, and the battle for its top prizes seems to get more and more competitive by the year. Over the last 14 years, we have witnessed Barcelona become arguably the greatest club side ever, Arsenal and Juventus go entire domestic seasons unbeaten, Manchester United dominate much of the English game and Brazil, Italy, Spain and Germany win the World Cup.
During that same time frame there have been some truly astounding players to grace the game. Goalkeepers and defenders like Manuel Neuer, Gianluigi Buffon, Fabio Cannavaro, Cafu and Philipp Lahm have shown their consistent brilliance, English stars like Steven Gerrard, Paul Scholes and Wayne Rooney have been world-class for long periods and supreme strikers like Raul, Andriy Shevchenko and Luis Suarez have wowed audiences week in, week out with their talent. There have some unbelievable players to grace the Beautiful Game throughout history. Whether it be Pele, Ferenc Puskas and Alfredo Di Stefano in the 1950s, Diego Maradona in the 1980s or, in the last 20 years, the likes of Zinedine Zidane, Ronaldo and Ronaldinho, we have been treated to witnessing some true footballing genius.
Fast forward to the present day, and football is as big as ever. We are in a position where we can track the progress of any player throughout Europe, with the likes of the Premier League, Bundesliga, La Liga and Serie A all available to watch anywhere in the world week in, week out. This perhaps give us a more valid opinion on who the greatest players on the planet are these days, in comparison to 30 or 40 years ago.

World Cup winner Philipp Lahm has announced his retirement from international football, according to the BBC. The fullback won the competition with Germany at this summer’s finals in Brazil and believes now is the right time to step down from the national side.
The defender began his international career in the U-17 team in 1999 and also represented his country at U-18, U-19, U-20 and U-21 levels, and was part of the squad that won silver for Germany at the U-19 European championships in 2002. His first game in the senior side came against Croatia in February 2004 but ended in a 2-1 defeat. His last appearance was against Argentina on July 13, with Germany winning the World Cup thanks to a 1-0 win. Lahm said in an open letter on the Dfb website:

Have you ever wondered what the FIFPro XI might have looked like had it been based on stats alone? Players like Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo had long been ensured of their place in the team which was voted for by International captains, managers and media alike. Messi was joined by team-mates Xavi, Iniesta and Dani Alves after Barcelona won the Spanish League at a canter. Manuel Neuer was, in many’s opinion, deservedly the man between the sticks after helping his Bayern side to the first treble won by a German team, along with Philipp Lahm and Franck Ribery, and the team was completed by Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos and Psg men, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Thiago Silva. But would they retain that place if it was based purely on stats so far this season?
Could a mid-table La Liga player sneak his way into the mix?...

Amongst all the end of year awards announced in the last week, FIFPro have selected their team of the year for 2013 and it is: Manuel Neuer; Dani Alves, Thiago Silva, Sergio Ramos, Philipp Lahm; Andres Iniesta, Xavi, Franck Ribery; Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Zlatan Ibrahimovic.
Naturally the reaction in the British press has been to question the lack of Premier League players in the team, but that is just a reflection of the poor performance of English teams in the Champions League compared to previous years.
What is more noteworthy, though, is that the selection reflects an accepted wisdom of previous years with regard to the dominance of La Liga and Spain’s Golden Generation. In a year in which Barcelona were thoroughly outplayed by Bayern Munich across two legs in the Champions League and Spain well beaten in the Confederations Cup Final, should...

Manchester City will have to cause an unlikely upset and affect a three-goal swing on hosts Bayern Munich to top Champions League Group D.
Both sides have already guaranteed their places in the knockout stages ahead of this clash. Munich need a point to clinch top spot, but boast a fearsome and strong home record.
City lost their only previous visit to the Allianz Arena 2-0 in September 2011 with Mario Gomez bagging a first half brace. Manuel Pellegrini’s team were comprehensively beaten at home by Bayern on matchday two this term with supporting trio Franck Ribery, Thomas Muller and Arjen Robben all on target.

England renew hostilities with bitter rivals at Wembley knowing Germany have won on their last two visits to the Old and New stadiums. Since the turn of the millennium honours have never been even between these footballing powerhouses.
Roy Hodgson has already named his starting line-up, which contains only two survivors from the team that began the 2-0 defeat by Chile. Joe Hart returns in goal despite being dropped by club side Manchester City following a series of high profile mistakes this term.
Kyle Walker and Ashley Cole come in to the fullback berths after sitting Friday out and being an unused substitute respectively. Injury to Phil Jones means Manchester United teammate Chris Smalling partners Phil Jagielka, who in turn comes in for Gary Cahill, in central defence.

We tune in every weekend to watch our favourite teams in action whether it be on TV, at the grounds, listening by radio or following the minute-by-minute updates on the laptop or smartphone to watch the ‘best league in the world’. However not everyone agrees with this banner that many of us get carried away with; many people will sit and argue saying that Real Madrid have beaten the potential Champions-elect of the Epl and thus proves that La Liga is stronger than its English counterpart, or the fact that the reigning Champions of England proved to be the whipping-boys of their Champions’ League group. One way of looking at who has the stronger league would be to look at the strongest possible starting XIs that each league could feel and compare to see which is stronger, on paper at least.
Which team is stronger; that led by the record-breaking brilliance of Ronaldo and Messi,...

Football is arguably the most popular sport on the planet, although in 2012, the sport had to take a back seat with greater focus on the Olympics across the globe. Nevertheless, the greatest footballers on the planet continued to entertain week in and week out, come rain or shine (although maybe not snow). Some of the greatest sporting moments of 2012 revolved around the beautiful game, such as the remarkable unbeaten season for Juventus in Italy, or the adrenaline-fuelled finish to the Premier League season.

Germany cruised to victory over a valiant if limited Greece team. Philipp Lahm, Germany’s captain, led the way with a swerving strike five minutes before half time. Georgios Samaras equalised for Greece early in the second half, but goals from Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus put the three time European Champions into the ascendency. A late Dimitris Salpigidis penalty could not hide how badly the Greeks were outplayed.
The strength of the German squad was illustrated as Jogi Loew made three surprising changes, switching his front three of Podolski, Muller and Gomez for Dortmund’s Marco Reus, Bayer Leverkusen’s Andre Schurrle, and Lazio’s Miroslav Klose. Jerome Boateng returned from suspension, in place of Lars Bender, as Germany dominated from the first minute to the last.

So here we are, at the business end of Europes Biggest Club Competition. Although this means we’re getting closer to a Barcelona heavy May final in which pundits throw the terms ‘remarkable’, ‘breathtaking’, ‘tika taka’, ‘Is there anything Messi can’t do?’, ‘I just saw Messi deliver a baby, there definitely is nothing he can’t do’, a bit more than you would like to hear.
However until that time comes and we all do our best to grin and bare it, we have plenty to be excited about tonight with this pick of the Semi-Final round with Bayern against Madrid, two teams packed with attackingly creative world superstars.
Both teams have had quite comfortable roads to this stage with Bayern arguably having to overcome the most difficult group stage, but since then they, as well as Madrid, have breezed to this stage with unnerving confidence and they...
