Opening an ambitious restaurant in L.A. is notoriously challenging. The gauntlet runs from permitting hassles and online critics to razor-thin profit margins. But Carmel, a new dining concept backed by entertainment insiders, faces a singular predicament. It debuts its inclusive, cosmopolitan ideal of Tel Aviv cuisine on Thursday, the day after a violent UCLA protest over the Gaza conflict ended in mass arrests and as the International Criminal Court is reported to be weighing warrants for senior Israeli leaders.
Carmel — named after Tel Aviv’s main century-old bazaar — was conceived a year ago by a group of hospitality veterans whose other endeavors include the kosher Nua in Beverly Hills as well as lower Manhattan’s Cleveland 19, a Mediterranean-minded lure for the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio and Jonah Hill. The restaurant’s investors include WME’s Brad Slater and Warner Music Group executive vp Aton Ben-Horin. It’s taken over...

When Heroes Fly is leaving Netflix – Picture: Netflix
A New Year is just around the corner. Once again, we can make a feature from all the Netflix Originals currently set to depart the service globally or in select regions throughout January 2024.
If you’re wondering why some Netflix Originals are leaving Netflix – you wouldn’t be alone. In recent years, we’ve seen a slew of Netflix Originals depart the service and this mostly comes down to how Netflix licenses titles (particularly a lot of its earlier Originals). In some cases, Netflix simply picked up the international rights for certain series and movies for a fixed period. In these cases, calling them Netflix Exclusives is probably more appropriate, but it is what it is.
All of these movies, series and specials will soon be listed on our master list of every Netflix Original that has departed the service.

Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree has announced a new solo album, The Harmony Codex, and has shared the lead single “Economies of Scale” ahead of the LP’s September 29th release date.
The song lets Wilson — a renowned producer in his own right — explore his soulful side, as he builds layers of vocal harmonies around a pitter-pattering electronic rhythm that casts an early-aughts Radiohead vibe.
“I’m happy to announce my seventh album The Harmony Codex,” wrote Wilson on his website. “This one is a real trip, a beautiful and experimental 65-minute labyrinth of a record, with almost every one of its 10 tracks taking a different musical approach.”
Wilson also teased the follow-up single, “Impossible Tightrope,” which will be released next week. Wilson described the song as “completely different” than “Economies of Scale”: a “mostly instrumental 11-minute hybrid of progressive rock, spiritual jazz, and electronica.”
“More songs from the...

Adaptations of such international shows as “BeTipul” and “Prisoners of War” introduced American audiences to Israeli formats. Now a batch of popular Israeli series are thrusting up-and-coming actors into the spotlight, poised to take Hollywood by storm.
Tomer Capon, who was cast by Natalie Portman in her directorial debut, “A Tale of Love and Darkness,” and has starred in two hit series overseas, “Fauda” and “When Heroes Fly,” is one such actor making headway in the States.
“Everything happened really fast for me,” Capon says. “When I got the call that Natalie [Portman] wanted to meet with me, I thought it was a joke. I was so naive and green, I didn’t know what was happening. I didn’t know anything.”
Although Capon says he “wasn’t that well-known and my career was not that stable” at the time, while shooting with Portman he got an audition for “Fauda,” which...

Immediately after she saw the George Clooney film, "The American," IFC.com editor Alison Willmore tweeted, "Are there ever any Happy assassins? They're always moping around by themselves. There has to be some upside to it as a career choice." She had an excellent point: movie after movie portray hitmen as dour, moody depressives. Presumably no one is forcing these people into the profession. The economy's not that bad, and it's not one of those jobs that's passed down from one generation to the next like a cobbler in Victorian England ("You want me to be like you Dad! But I'm not like you! I don't want to use an M40 rifle to lay down supressive fire!"). Surely their skills -- accuracy with guns and knives, making enigmatic conversations seem incredibly charming, doing lots of pushups without a shirt on -- would suit them well in other jobs. What about...
