After discovering that her boyfriend is a serial killer known as The Rain Ripper, Mary (Vanessa Grasse) just wants a fresh start, but her new job at a gas station takes a deadly turn as her sanity starts to slip and the bodies start piling up in the new horror film Open 24 Hours. With the slasher out now on Blu-ray, DVD, Digital, and VOD from 4Digital Media, we caught up with writer/director Padraig Reynolds in a new Q&a feature to discuss the long journey to getting his latest movie made, how the gas station from the end of his first film Rites of Spring inspired him to make Open 24 Hours, and how he used his father-in-law's raincoat to come up with the look for The Rain Ripper.

"I'm not crazy, you know." 4Digital Media has released an official US trailer for an indie horror thriller titled Open 24 Hours, the latest from filmmaker Padraig Reynolds. This originally premiered in 2018 at FrightFest and Fantastic Fest, and it also played at Screamfest, Sitges, and the Telluride Horror Show. Starring Vanessa Grasse as Mary - who suffers from severe paranoia and hallucinations. After setting her serial killer boyfriend on fire, a woman gets a job at an all-night gas station. However, left alone to her own devices, her paranoia and hallucinations return with furious consequences. Customers and friends suddenly start turning up dead and mutilated all around her. Also stars Brendan Fletcher, Cole Vigue, Emily Tennant, and Daniel O’Meara. Why do so many trailers show so much? But I suppose not that many are going to watch this one anyway, might as well entice them with something. Here's the official...

Open 24 Hours is the latest film from horror director Padraig Reynolds (Rites of Spring). Focusing on a paranoid and delusional woman, Open 24 Hours takes place at an all-night gas station. Here, Mary (Vanessa Grasse) begins to see tragedies from her past. This title had a few film festival appearances in 2018, including Fantastic Fest. Now, Open 24 Hours is set to show on home entertainment formats. And, this title also stars: Brendan Fletcher (Rampage), Cole Vigue ("iZombie") and Emily Tennant. The film's North American artwork and trailer are hosted here. The trailer shows a hooded figure and so does the DVD/Blu-ray artwork. Hooded in a rain jacket, this villain hovers over an injured victim. Offering two taglines: "pray you never run out of gas" and "welcome to the graveyard shift," the movie poster is haunted by an eerie green light. One of the better horror film posters this year,...

Back in 2012 I saw Padraig Reynolds’ debut feature Rites of Spring at Glasgow Frightfest, then in 2015 I caught his film Worry Dolls – again at Frightfest. Unfortunately I missed last years Open 24 Hours, however I was determined to see Reynolds’ latest, Dark Light, on the big screen at Frightfest. Being a huge fan of those two aforementioned films there was no way I was passing up the chance to see yet another slice of Reynolds’ particular style of horror.
Such a shame then that Dark Light felt totally derivative of Devil’s Gate, whch played in the exact same screen as Reynolds’ film back at Frightfest in 2017…

"It sounds like there is someone inbetween the walls." Spotlight Pictures has debuted the first sales promo trailer for the sci-fi horror film Dark Light, from writer/director Padraig Reynolds. The film is currently being sold at the Efm and they're looking to find a distributor, in addition to a festival to debut this film at. Dark Light is a horror creature feature about some kind of monster (potentially an alien being?) that takes a young girl from her bedroom while at her mother's childhood farm home. She goes crazy trying to find her and figure out what happened, while attempting to convince police that an actual creature took her. Starring Jessica Madsen, Ed Brody, Opal Littleton, and Ben Sullivan. This looks scary as hell, including the typical cornfield trope, but still. I'm glad the trailer shows a glimpse of the monster because it looks gnarly. Here's the festival promo...

Zee Entertainment, one of India’s largest media groups, is making a committed foray into the English-language movie production business. The initiative is spearheaded by Dubai-based Shibani Kapur, Zee’s CEO of international production.
“We are targeting high-concept, low-budget films, in the genre space and with the kind of international cast that a company like Lionsgate or New Line would recognize,” Kapur told Variety. “We want these movies to travel.”
Kapur’s unit Zee Studios Intl. aims to deliver up to four films per year, made with budgets between $1 million-$5 million. It has completed its first two productions and is currently finishing a third.
Its first picture was “Open 24 Hours,” a psychological horror film set in a rural gas station. Directed by Padraig Reynolds and starring Brendan Fletcher and Vanessa Grasse, it has been selected for all the major fantasy festivals including Sitges, Fantasticfest Frightfest U.K., Screamfest in L.

Sometimes a horror movie is so suspenseful that you don't recognize its flaws until later. A midnight viewing of Open 24 Hours not only kept me awake but on the edge of my seat for its entire running time. Director Padraig Reynolds proves that his underrated debut Rites of Spring signaled a solid talent for the horror genre and this film has me excited to see what he comes up with next. Mary (Vanessa Grasse) has just been released on parole. Her dour Parole Officer and best friend Debbie (Emily Tennant) are her only support system as she faces life after jail for setting her serial killer boyfriend James (Cole Vigue) on fire. I don’t understand why so few slashers don’t mine rich story potential of the final girl surviving the killer. There are only a handful of slasher films that adequately portray the post-traumatic stress of living through these violent attacks, the two that immediately pop into my head Scream 2 and its sequels as well as the recent Last Girl Standing, and somewhere in between those films – deftly balancing the slasher fun of the former and the sobering drama of the latter is Open 24 Hours, a grisly, waterlogged throwback slasher that relishes in gnashing its sharp, bloody teeth.
Open 24 Hours concerns Mary (Vanessa Grasse), a young woman fresh off a stint behind bars, having set her boyfriend on fire. Why did she do that, you ask? Because he was a hammer-wielding serial killer known as The Rain Ripper, his particular murderous habit triggered by bouts of rainfall. On the surface,...

A serial killer's violent impulses live on through voodoo in The Devil's Dolls, coming out in select theaters and on VOD and digital platforms on September 16th, and we caught up with director Padraig Reynolds in our latest Q&A feature to discuss the making of his southern-set horror movie.
Thanks for taking the time to answer some questions for us, Padraig. What attracted you to the story of The Devil’s Dolls?
Padraig Reynolds: I’m a big fan of voodoo films such as Serpent and the Rainbow and Venom. So when I read The Devil’s Dolls, I thought it would be a great opportunity to do something fresh and exciting in a genre that not too many movies are made about.
Christopher Wiehl co-wrote, produced, and stars in the film. What was it like working with Wiehl, who seemed very invested in the character of Matt?...

An official trailer and poster have been released for IFC Midnight’s upcoming horror film, Padraig Reynolds’ The Devil’s Dolls. Watch the story of The Devil’s Dolls unfold as a sleepy, southern town in Mississippi is devastated by a curse unleashed by a serial killer’s talismans.
“A serial killer’s curse unleashes a season of slaughter in the backwoods of Mississippi. According to an ancient Guatemalan tradition, parents teach their children to allay their troubles by telling them to handmade “worry dolls” just before bedtime. But when several of these talismans—which once belonged to a notorious mass murderer—find their way into the hands of unsuspecting residents of a small Southern town, it sets off a grisly wave of bloodshed. The latest from Rites of Spring director Padraig Reynolds is a voodoo-slasher shocker bursting with scarily inventive kills. Christopher Wiehl, Kym Jackson, and Tina Lifford star.

It’s been quite some time since I saw Padraig Reynolds’ debut feature Rites of Spring back at Glasgow Frightfest 2012 and since then Reynolds has been pretty silent on the directing front. However, being a huge fan of that film there was no way I was passing up the chance to see yet another slice of Reynolds’ particular style of Southern Gothic.
Much like Rites of Spring mixed genres, taking in crime drama and traditional stalk and slash horror, by way of Southern horror like Jeepers Creepers; Worry Dolls mixes old-school voodoo with the tropes of classic 80s slashers (yes, this is yet Another Frightfest movie to utilise the sterotypes of the slasher genre) in a tale that – like Last Girl Standing...

In the ever-growing world of independent horror films, Rites of Spring is a step up from such low budget indies like Dropping Evil. But even with a slight bigger budget, writer/director Padraig Reynolds knows he needs to do something extra to stand out. However, like most films, the harder they try to stand out, the more incoherent they become.
Rites of Spring follows two separate, unrelated stories. The first involves a creepy farmer who kidnaps young women to offer as sacrifice to prevent some demonic being from wreaking havoc on his farm. The bizarre ritual involves placing a cow's head on the woman's naked body (a very disturbing image) and some form of chanting to ward off the being. The second story involves a complex plot to kidnap a rich man's daughter in order to get his money.

A Planet Fury-approved selection of notable genre releases for November.
Rites of Spring (2011) Mpi Home Video DVD Available Now
After abducting the daughter of a wealthy socialite, a group of kidnappers seek refuge in an abandoned school in the middle of a wooded nowhere. Little do they know that they’ve chosen the hunting grounds of a ravenous creature that can only be sated by ritualistic sacrifices every spring. Writer/director Padraig Reynolds’ crime thriller/slasher hybrid received mixed reviews during its short festival run, but it’s a solidly crafted piece with some good performances and impressive cinematography by Carl Herse. The one-sheet art is a thing of beauty.
Heaven’s Gate (1981) Criterion Blu-ray and DVD Available Now

Why Watch? If you’ve ever wanted to watch Ray Wise continue looking creepy and making terrible ethical decisions with a blunt instrument, Twin Peaks is a great way to go. If you only have 9 minutes, this short film from Padraig Reynolds will definitely do the trick. With the stakes immediately high, we’re dropped into the desert just a handful of days before the people decide their new governor with one of the candidates. Fortunately, he has his wife to keep him company. Unfortunately, he’s also got a big problem. It’s excellent to see a slow-burn executed so well in the time given. Chalk it up to Wise’s sheer, unmitigated magnetism, the chill of co-star Lin Shaye and the natural assumptions that we all make about the people reaching for power in our society. It’s a moral tale that sinks to the bottom of your gut. Kudos...

It takes more than gore and guts to impress true slasher fans now a days. Horror audiences have pretty much seen it all, from murderous dolls to dream haunters to evil leprechauns, but Hollywood can’t seem to line up enough sexy co-eds to sacrifice for our enjoyment.
Padraig Reynolds’ country fried horror Rites of Spring was the most recent felon to criminalize my beloved genre, capitalizing on nothing but recycled themes. I admit, I have my guilty pleasure delights which display less than captivating storytelling countered by an over-abundance of insanity, but Reynolds’ script fails to channel any such entertainment.
With so many discussion points amidst this debacle, lets start with Reynolds’ choice to mix a kidnapping thriller with a slasher film. The director thought it would be fun and inventive to have criminals get caught in a scenario way over their heads, akin to films like The Horde and From Dusk Till Dawn,...
