Ahhh.. seems just like yesterday that Film Independent President Josh Welsh was on stage at the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards announcing the kickoff to our year-long #AD30 celebration, commemorating three uninterrupted decades—pandemics, strikes and recessions be damned!—of Film Independent Artist Development programs.
Of course, in reality that announcement was one full awards cycle ago, back when the Past Lives, Earth Mamas and May Decembers of the world were but a flicker in eyes of industry plaudit prognosticators. But the story of #AD30 has only grown in the interim.
Look no further than the program that started it all, Project Involve, which today announced the 27 new Fellows joining as part of its 2024 cohort—the 31st overall such cohort in a long line of inclusive, up-and-coming industry players. Project Involve alumni include Lulu Wang (Expats), Linda Yvette Chávez (Flamin’ Hot), Jomo Fray (All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt), Effie T. Brown...

The anime industry has grown exponentially in recent years. While there is still the occasional debate over “subs versus dubs,” companies like Funimation have pushed dubbed anime into the mainstream and shown what can be accomplished. Funimation has worked hard to bring as many important anime series to the public as possible, many of which include more recent phenomena like My Hero Academia or series that have been a fixture of anime for decades, like One Piece.
Brina Palencia plays Tony Tony Chopper on One Piece, a beloved and important character, but she’s also a welcome presence in other series, like her work as Mineta in My Hero Academia. Palencia reflected on the dedicated fan base around One Piece, the surprising reception to a random Dragon Ball character, and what it was like to finish My Hero Academia’s latest season during a pandemic.

It’s hard to imagine that a general American audience might take to new Japanese anime “My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising” beyond the already robust fanbase of “My Hero Academia,” the popular shonen-style boy’s adventure manga and anime about teenage superhero Izuku Midoriya as he leads his super-powered high school classmates in becoming better team players and aspiring heroes.
Which isn’t to say that uninitiated moviegoers will have trouble understanding the plot of “Heroes Rising,” which follows Izuku and U.A. High School’s Class 1-a as they try to stop multi/over-powered villain Nine (Johnny Yong Bosch) from killing the residents of Nabu Island. “Heroes Rising” is, like the ongoing anime that it supplements, full of expository dialogue and flashbacks that help new viewers understand what they’re looking at, and why it matters.
Still, it’s hard to imagine anybody but fans caring about the movie’s big climax,...

Looking back on this still-young century makes clear that 2007 was a major time for cinematic happenings — and, on the basis of this retrospective, one we’re not quite through with ten years on. One’s mind might quickly flash to a few big titles that will be represented, but it is the plurality of both festival and theatrical premieres that truly surprises: late works from old masters, debuts from filmmakers who’ve since become some of our most-respected artists, and mid-career turning points that didn’t necessarily announce themselves as such at the time. Join us as an assembled team, many of whom were coming of age that year, takes on their favorites.

Over the past year I reviewed a lot of indie horror films, some of them really good, some of them just Ok, and some of them really, really bad. The following isn't exactly a best of the year list, because I haven't watched every single film that was released, played at a film festival, or completed filming this year. Rather, these are the best movies that I reviewed for MoreHorror.com in 2015, and are all movies that I can recommend without hesitation.
Mania is directed by Jessica Cameron and stars Ellie Church. Olalla is written and directed by Amy Hesketh and stars Amy Hesketh, Jac Avila, Mila Joya, and Erix Antoine. Headless is directed by Arthur Cullipher, written by Nathan Erdel, and stars Shane Beasley, Kelsey Carlisle, Dave parker and Ellie Church. Lumberjack Man is Ready to Chew Bubblegum and Kick Ass and He is All out of Bubblegum: First Trailer
Tagline: "Welcome to Summer Camp." It has been a couple of years since there has been any word on Lumberjack Man. Since 2013 and an appearance at the American Film Market, the film has been picked up as part of the After Dark Film series of releases. Lumberjack Man is one of the "8 Films to Die For," this year. And, the release takes place in mid-October. The film stars Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs), Brina Palencia and Andy San Dimas. As well, a trailer for the film is hosted here. The blood effects take place during Spring Break. During this sexy holiday, a demon logger rises from the brush. His axe is ready to hew limbs, while some of the local campers seem oblivious to events. The first trailer for the film looks campy (accidental pun). A shady looking character throws axes, while others run through the woods. Bodies are distorted and events look unbelievable and over-the-top.

I get maybe five or six requests to review movies a day, coming from everybody from professional publicists, to teenage filmmakers making movies in their parent's backyards, and everybody in between. And the thing is, you have to say no to most of these movies, because you know that most of them are going to suck and you'd drive yourself crazy watching them, and also because you simply don't have the time.

The story of the young "star-crossed" lovers is coming to a close. The CW has cancelled Star-Crossed after one season of 13 episodes.
Star-Crossed revolves around a pair of teens -- one human (Aimee Teegarden) and one alien (Matt Lanter) -- who fall in love and struggle to overcome the discrimination and distrust around them. The rest of the cast includes Grey Damon, Natalie Hall, Malese Jow, Titus Makin Jr., Chelsea Gilligan, Brina Palencia, and Greg Finley.
The series debuted as a mid-season replacement and never took hold in the ratings. The premiere drew a lackluster 0.5 rating in the 18-49 demo with 1.28 million viewers. Subsequent episodes performed even worse, making Star-Crossed one of the network's lowest-rated shows.
There are just 13 episodes in the season and the finale, titled "Passion Lends Them Power," will air next Monday night.

Okay, so, a lot of stuff went down during the fourth episode of "Star-Crossed," "And Left No Friendly Drop." But none of it was as amazing as the moment when Teri realized some blonde b**** from the opposing school purposefully poisoned Sophia, calmly took her earrings off and headbutted that witch to the ground. That's what happens when you mess with an Atrian!
Then, after Sophia was saved by Emery's quick thinking (and a stab from an epi pen), we bore witness the greatest melee ever involving high school students in speedos punching the crap out of each other. Best move: When Drake started to pull a dude from the opposing team out of the pool, then punched him back down. Take that! (Also, here was an awww-worthy moment: Eric and Drake glanced at each other mid-fight, then didn't punch each other. That's called progress, people!)

So far on "Star-Crossed," Eric is a d-bag. Like, a super-mega a-hole, really. But that is going to change thanks to certain events that transpire during the fourth episode of "Star-Crossed," "And Left No Friendly Drop." Jesse Luken, who plays your new favorite jock with an anger management problem, says that episode 4 is when he started to sympathize with his character.
"I think it's when I, as the actor, felt the most sympathy for him," Luken tells Zap2it. "I think you start to get a little sense of where he's coming from, which I think is important. We all know a**holes in the world, but it's interesting sometimes to see why these people act the way that they do."
Besides -- if you look at it from Eric's point of view, his crappy life is 100 percent due to the aliens who invaded his town, then his school, and now his swim team.

It's the first day of school for Roman, his sister, Sophia (Brina Palencia), and the five other alien teenagers integrating into the local Louisiana high school in the year 2024.
But not everyone is happy for the Atrians' arrival -- Eric (Jesse Luken) is particularly unhappy about all the progress being made and picks Sophia to harass in the hallway. Don't worry, Roman comes to her rescue -- right before Eric sucker-punches him in the face.
It's the "Star-Crossed" equivalent of "Welcome to the O.C., b***," but with much higher stakes.

By now you've seen the commercials for The CW's newest series, "Star-Crossed." While you'll have to wait until Monday, Feb. 17 at 8 p.m. Et/Pt to catch the premiere, you can peep some pretty pictures from the first two episodes right now.
The show takes place ten years in the future when seven teenagers from an alien colony in small-town Louisiana integrate into the local high school. They've been living in a special military-guarded alien sector since their ship crash-landed on Earth, and forces from both communities -- the aliens and the humans -- are against the move toward coexistence on Earth.
Matt Lanter plays Roman, one of the Atrians, who shares a special bond with human Emery (Aimee Teegarden). Check out some spiffy shots of the characters below, along with photos from the first two episodes. Then click on our "Star-Crossed" gallery for even more.

The latest indie slasher film to come of Texas is titled Lumberjack Man. This blend of horror and comedy takes place at Good Friends Church Camp. And here, a demon logger has sprouted from the trees. Lumberjack Man is from director Josh Bear. The film stars Michael Madsen (Reservoir Dogs), Brina Palencia and Andy San Dimas. This feature is now complete and will show in Santa Monica at the American Film Market next month (November, 2013). Several stills and a synopsis have been released before the screening. The film's story follows several tropes of a serial killer slasher film. Except, writers Ed Kuehnel and Matt Entin have added in some comedy. Apparently, this killer wants his flapjacks soaked in camper's blood. Fans of slashers can preview four stills from Lumberjack Man here. In the photos, the maniac arms himself with an axe and goes in search of easy prey. Some of those victims fight back,...

The Sundance Film Festival starts this week (we’ve just finished weatherising our Damon Wise for the event; think the rebel base on Hoth if you need a visual) but already one of the most anticipated movies is Primer director Shane Carruth’s first film in nearly a decade, Upstream Color. In advance of the premiere, Carruth and co have put out a new trailer, available over at Apple. While most of the details are being kept under wraps for now, the basic synopsis of the movie reads thusly: “A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the lifecycle of an ageless organism. Identity becomes an illusion as they struggle to assemble the loose fragments of wrecked lives.”Beyond that, all we have is a cast list, with Carruth appearing alongside Andrew Sensenig, Brina Palencia, Amy Seimetz, Juli Erickson, Frank Mosley and Mollie Milligan. It’s refreshing to see...

Shane Carruth made his filmmaking debut in 2004 with Primer, a feature which he directed, wrote, acted in, produced, edited, and composed the music for. The movie, which dealt with time travel, has seen its audience grow over the years, with many people expressing praise for the feature, and often revisiting it. Carruth, however, has not been hasty in his follow-up, and his second feature, titled Upstream Color, will be making its debut at the Sundance Film Festival in 2013. Carruth once again takes on screenwriting and directing duties, as well as playing a supporting role in the feature alongside Andrew Sensenig, Brina Palencia, Trey Walpole, and Amy Seimetz. A third trailer for the movie has now been released, and can be seen below.

I like to think that I’m on track with every indie film development there possibly is – especially Sundance alumni. But somehow the filmmaker who gave us Primer wasn’t as dormant as I thought he was. Upstream Color sees Shane Carruth oversee all aspects of his film: write, direct, act, compose the score, edit, and is also the dp and was a camera operator as well. By the looks of the media that has been released on this indie project – it looks glossy in the best kind of manner possible. The most anticipated film title at the fest this year (alongside a certain Linklater film) also stars the hardest working actress in the biz: Amy Seimetz.

When some young, fresh and original directors garner attention for their first film, it can lead to the Hollywood lure of big names, bigger budgets, and more generic work. But on the evidence of this trailer for Primer director Shane Carruth’s Upstream Color, he’s sticking with the complex, thoughtful and atmospheric tone. Take a look above.Very little is known about the film, which features Carruth acting once again, this time alongside Andrew Sensenig, Brina Palencia, Amy Seimetz, Juli Erickson, Frank Mosley and Mollie Milligan. It will screen at the Sundance Festival in January, and so far all that has really been released besides some stills is this rough synopsis: “A man and woman are drawn together, entangled in the lifecycle of an ageless organism. When it comes to talking about fan's attachment to BioWare's extended universes, it's tough to talk about Dragon Age without at least thinking about the RPG developer's other major IP, Mass Effect. It's clear that the latter has a dedicated and often vocal fanbase with a great deal of attachment to Shepard's journey aboard the Normandy these past few years. At the same time, it's hard to imagine (or find) the same kind of obsessive clamor for the studio's dark fantasy RPG series.
Nevertheless, here we are talking about an animated expansion of the Dragon Age universe in Dawn of the Seeker. And while there's some nice technical gloss on this CG feature from director Vexille director Fumihiko Sori, this 90-minute film fails to make a convincing case for why one should care about BioWare's fantasy IP.
The film follows Cassandra, a Seeker (essentially a knight), who accidentally sniffs out...

A plot summary for the film here:
"The concept of "Throwing Stones" derives from the sociologist theory on broken windows. A broken window is left unfixed in a neighborhood; it signals to that community it's acceptable for that type of behavior to take place. These ideas compound until the neighborhood becomes decayed and unable to achieve its past grandeur. Now apply the theory...

"Throwing Stones" is an upcoming horror webseries, which was first reported on (here). The film has moved along in production, with the first episode planned for release this November. Leading up to the release, several video yearbook diaries will be release, which detail more about each character in the episodes. Assistant Principal Beckett has already been unlocked below and a trailer has become available this week. The film itself centers on a group of high-schoolers, who are seen by administration as "broken windows" (Throwing) and in need of repair. Check out the latest details on this production below, or at the film's website located in the right hand panel.

Throwing Stones Alt PosterToday is the day of the webseries, as Throwing Stones shows up on the radar. The film takes on the Broken Windows Theory which basically states that the removal of torn down and broken homes or the repairing of damaged infrastructure leads to a safer community. Also, keeping things in order leads to less vandalism and fewer instances of crime. This is a theory that was trumped by Mayor Giuliani in New York during the '80s and '90s with some success.
Throwing Stones will take this approach to a whole new level, as students are seen as the broken windows in need of repair. But only a few of the students can be fixed with hammer and nail, while others need complete destruction! In Throwing Stones no one is safe, not even the viewers! So, take an early look at a film which uses some...

Most people who are familiar with anime (and many who aren’t) probably already know a thing or two about Dragon Ball, one of the most popular family of anime titles to ever grace our shores. But for those of you who don’t, a quick synopsis may be in order. A rough breakdown of the series would go something like:
Episode 1: Goku (charging energy fireball attack) Ka –
Episode 2: Me –
Episode 3: Ah –
Episode 4: Me –
Episode 5: (releases massive wave) Ahh!!!
Episode 6: Ahhhh!!!
Episode 7: Hhh!!!
Episode 8: !!!
Episode 9: Piccolo (sees approaching fireball) Oh crap –
Episode 10: (is hit) Yaaahh!!!
Episode 11: Ahhh!!!
Episode 12: Hhh!!! (end of season 1)
Seasoned fans will get the joke — Dragon Ball, while much beloved, is not exactly known for its breathtaking rate of plot development. Whole episodes, heck, whole Seasons go by as the characters punch, kick, taunt, charge...
