Genndy Tartakovsky’s work brilliantly reinforces the mantra of “less is more.” Samurai Jack uses the trials of a time-traveling samurai to create an aura of loneliness and desperation, while Primal explores the unexpectedly moving friendship between a dinosaur and a caveman. More broadly, Tartakovsky’s focused ambition lends itself well to the at once mythic and intimate odysseys that he takes viewers on.
Tartakovsky’s new animated series, Unicorn: Warriors Eternal, centers on a group of magical beings—sorceress Melinda (Hazel Doupe), cosmic monk Seng (Demari Hunte), warrior elf Eldrid (Tom Milligan), and steam-powered robot Copernicus—tasked with fending off a monstrous evil through the ages, which means that they’ll need physical hosts to travel through time. So begins a dogged battle, with host body after host body thrown at an ageless villain that doesn’t require flesh to wreak havoc. Oh, and there’s one other complication: This time,...

Ever since scoring a Season 2 renewal, the surprise announcement of a Fantasy Island Season 1 Holiday Special -- comprised of Fantasy Island Season 1 Episode 9 and Fantasy Island Season 1 Episode 10 -- has been a mystery wrapped in an enigma.
Would they carry on from Fantasy Island Season 1 Episode 8 and the hauntingly foreboding introduction of Elena's angry spirit of a cousin? Or would it be a bridge episode to seed new plotlines for Season 2?
Delightfully, the two-hour special delivers a cleverly self-contained storyline as well as another that answers a question that spawned on Fantasy Island Season 1 Episode 6 about Mr. Jones. It even gives our core characters some permissions to move forward with in the future.
While the format of a typical Fantasy Island script could be categorized as procedural -- following a set template of guest(s) arrive, fantasy happens, guest(s) leave wiser to live a better life -- for...

In the 1980s and 1990s, three promising young kung fu fighters trained with the notorious Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan), becoming his only official disciples. However, their story didn’t have a great outcome; currently the so-called Three Tigers have other concerns, kung fu is a mere memory for them. Danny (Alain Uy) is a divorced father, more focused on his day job than on his little son (Joziah Lagonoy). Hing (Ron Yuan) gained weight and never fully recovered from an accident that damaged one of his legs. Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) is the Tiger who has stayed in better shape, though he now practices Brazilian jiu jitsu. Our protagonists meet again after their former teacher and father figure passes away, apparently of a heart attack, although...

Photo: ‘The Paper Tigers’/Well Go USA Entertainment ‘The Paper Tigers’ is a great movie, lovingly and skillfully paying homage to classic Hong Kong kung fu comedies (think Stephen Chow and Jackie Chan)--it’s also one of few true examples of Asian-American cinema. Debuting director Quoc Bao Tran and his team originally pitched the film to Hollywood producers, but were offered $4 million with the caveat that the Asian-American lead is replaced by a White lead to be played by Bruce Willis--they declined the offer, producing the film with an ultra-lean shooting budget of $1 million. Martial arts movies remain contentious in Asian American cinema. On one hand, the likes of Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan have made major breakthroughs in the US; thanks to their kung fu movies from the 20th century, Hollywood realized that Asians too are excellent leads. On the other hand, however, the same films have molded into an unbreakable ceiling for Asian American actors. Stereotypes of sagely shifu and nunchuck-wielding warriors have since been well baked-in, the most recent “Mortal Kombat” (2021) notwithstanding.
Quoc Bao Tran’s “The Paper Tigers” (2020) enters the fray with a charming spin on an age-old trope. This production too had initially faced funding resistance. Critics denounced “yet another” Asian American martial arts movie, clamoring for other forms of representation. Upon viewing, however, these arguments seem redundant, if not ironic. “The Paper Tigers” is anything but. While it plays with the usual tropes of kung fu comedy, the...

Game of Thrones alum Emilia Clarke toplines Lionsgate’s Above Suspicion, the Phillip Noyce-directed crime thriller that debuts in select theaters and on digital and on-demand platforms Friday. Jack Huston, Sophie Lowe, Austin Hébert, Karl Glusman, Chris Mulkey, Omar Miller, Kevin Dunn, Thora Birch and Johnny Knoxville also co-star in the film, which is based on a true story of one of the most notorious crimes in FBI history.
Clarke plays Susan Smith, a woman desperate to escape a seedy life of crime and drugs in a Kentucky coal mining town. When newly minted FBI agent Mark Putnam (Huston) recruits Susan as his informant for a high-profile case, she believes her bad luck may finally be changing. But as Susan and Putnam’s relationship deepens, so does the danger, setting them both on a collision course with deadly consequences.

There is a scene in The Paper Tigers in which Hing (Ron Yuan) details how one can tell a certain kick is special. Not the technique or style, but the sound. At that moment, everything else falls away, and Danny (Alain Uy), Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins), and Hing listen for the sound. It’s a special detail in a film full of them, thanks in large part to writer/director Tran Quoc Bao.

The first thing you should know about Tran Quoc Bao’s “The Paper Tigers” is that his low-budget kung fu comedy — the heartfelt tale of three arthritic middle-aged Seattle men reuniting to avenge the murdered sifu who mentored them as teenagers — is often just as winning and delightful as you would hope from its premise. Unfolding like , Tran’s debut feature delivers a ton of charm for a kung fu throwback, and kicks a lot of ass for a broad comedy about some old guys relearning how to honor each other and fight for themselves.
If “The Paper Tigers” sags around the middle and loses its focus as it limps towards a finale that doesn’t hit with the force that it should, well, perhaps that’s to be expected from a martial arts movie whose heroes can’t throw a punch without pulling a muscle.

With only a couple of clicks of the dial and a little dash of hybrid vigor, the hackneyed can be made fresh again, a point proven by Tran Quoc Bao’s silly and special little kung fu comedy “The Paper Tigers.” Balancing the naive structure of an old Shaw Brothers movie (a vengeance mission with an escalating series of fights en route to the Big Boss showdown) with the kind of male-midlife-comedy schtick that bought Judd Apatow a house or six, Tran’s irresistibly good-humored debut is a diverting blend of Hong Kong and Hollywood that delivers, on a slender, Kickstarter-enhanced budget, a rousing roundhouse hug to both traditions.
Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) have become estranged in the 25 years since they were “The Three Tigers,” disciples of kung fu master Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) — scenes that play out with younger actors in lovingly re-created garage VHS footage.

As teenagers, kung fu disciples Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) were inseparable. "When the hands cross... all will be revealed." Well Go USA has released an official trailer for a martial arts action comedy titled The Paper Tigers, marking the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Quoc Bao Tran. This premiered at the Fantasia Film Festival last year, then stopped by numerous other festivals in the fall including the Busan, Hawaii, and Asian American Film Festival. Three Kung Fu prodigies have grown into washed-up, middle-aged men, now one kick away from pulling their hamstrings. But when their master is murdered, they must juggle their dead-end jobs, dad duties, and old grudges to avenge his death. The film stars Alain Uy, Ron Yuan, Mykel Shannon Jenkins, Matthew Page, Andy Le, and Yuji Okumoto. This already looks like an indie cult classic!! Helstrom will not be raising hell at Hulu again.
Per The Hollywood Reporter, the Marvel drama has been canceled after a single season.
The news means that Marvel's live-action TV series are now exclusively airing on Disney+, and all are now set in the wider Marvel Cinematic Universe.
News of the cancellation is not that surprising.
Hulu previously cut ties on Runaways after three seasons, and nixed the Ghost Rider TV series, which was set to be a part of the same universe as Helstrom.
Tom Austen, Sydney Lemmon, Elizabeth Marvel, Robert Wisdom, June Carryl, Ariana Guerra, and Alain Uy starred on the series, which was touted as Marvel's first foray into the world of terror.

Hulu is now out of live-action Marvel series, canceling “Helstrom” after just one season.
The cancelation now leaves the upcoming animated show “M.O.D.O.K.” with Patton Oswalt as the last pre-Kevin Feige Marvel TV series.
“Helstrom” was based on the Marvel comic “Hellstrom,” which centered on Damion Helstrom, aka the Son of Satan. In Hulu’s version, Daimon and Ana (who goes by Satana in the comic) Helstrom were the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings had a complicated dynamic as they tracked down the terrorizing worst of humanity.
“Homeland” alum Elizabeth Marvel starred as their mother, Victoria, who had been institutionalized for the last 20 years. The series also starred Ariana Guerra, Robert Wisdom, June Carryl and Alain Uy.

Marvel series “Helstrom” has been canceled at Hulu after one season, Variety has learned.
The move to cancel the series was not a surprising one, as “Helstrom” was the last live-action show produced by the now defunct Marvel Television unit under Jeph Loeb. The writing may have also been on the wall due to the fact that marketing materials for “Helstrom” — including its trailer and key art — did not include the word “Marvel” despite being based on Marvel comic book characters.
The show’s cancellation serves as a muted end to Loeb’s live-action efforts at Marvel, which at one time included six shows on Netflix as well as “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” on ABC, “Legion” on FX, “Cloak & Dagger” on Freeform, “The Gifted” on Fox, and “Runaways” on Hulu. All of those have either been canceled or wrapped up their runs in the past two years.

Hulu’s “Helstrom” might sport an elaborate mythology, but like many comic book stories, it ultimately reveals a simplistic core. Loosely based on Marvel comics characters, “Helstrom” follows Daimon (Tom Austen) and Ana (Sydney Lemmon) Helstrom, two adult siblings with psychic powers and an intimate connection with the demon world. Both use their gift in different ways: Daimon teaches ethics by day and performs secular exorcisms by night, while Ana runs an auction house and kills violent offenders who slip through society’s cracks. They’re reunited when the demon that has possessed their institutionalized mother, Victoria (Elizabeth Marvel), revives the Helstrom’s long-dead serial killer father who wishes to exact his revenge. On top of this, they have to deal with the numerous demons already roaming the Earth, plotting to wreak havoc at all times.

Being a professional actor is a job that requires lots of perseverance. Most actors hear no way more than they hear yes, and it’s not always easy to keep moving forward. This is something Alain Uy knows from first hand experience. But despite all of the ups and downs he’s has had over the years, he hasn’t given up. Alain may his on screen debut in 1998 but didn’t get another acting credit until 2005. Over the years, he made a variety of on screen appearances but nothing really stuck until 2015 when he was cast as Ernst Bodine in

After graduation, the trio drifted apart due to a mysterious fallout at an overseas tournament. Fast forward 25 years, and they are now adults — washed up middle-aged men to be specific. They are one kick away from pulling a hamstring and not at all preoccupied with thoughts of martial arts or childhood best friends. That all changes when their old master is murdered and...

The series will debut all episodes on Oct. 16. You can watch the video above.
“Helstrom” is based on the Marvel comic “Hellstrom,” which centered on Damion Helstrom, aka the Son of Satan. In Hulu’s version, Daimon and Ana (who goes by Satana in the comic) Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. Did you play a sport as a kid? Do you still play it now? No matter how much they enjoy themselves, no matter how hard they're initially willing to work, most people drop out. That's true even when what they're doing goes beyond physical training, when it's about a commitment to a way of life. Danny (Alain Uy) and Hing (Ron Yuan) haven't practised martial arts for years. They're middle aged, out of shape and out of the habit of solving their problems with action. But when their old sifu (Roger Yuan) dies and they suspect that he's been murdered, they track down old pal Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) to become the Three Tigers once more and set off in pursuit of justice.

Like the warring Japanese dojos depicted throughout the Karate Kid franchise, a growing disconnect exists between those who wish to learn a fighting style as a means of physical and emotional growth and those who simply seek the ability to punish their adversaries without mercy. It’s respect and honor versus strength and superiority—something even the most devout and sacred of Chinese Kung Fu masters like Sifu Cheung (Roger Yuan) can’t always instill in their pupils. No matter how much they strive to trust the younger generation’s capacity to protect what they’ve learned as a tool, the allure of morphing it into a weapon for profit is often too much to ignore. It’s why he retired after his three disciples left. The disappointment was too much to bear.

Most fans of martial arts cinema are expected to witness plenty of hard-hitting action and intense themes of loyalty and brotherhood in their films, not heartwarming tales about getting older. While there’s still plenty of the former on display, director Bao Tran attempts to mix together some unexpected elements into his new martial arts effort Paper Tigers, now screening at Fantasia International Film Festival.
“The Paper Tigers” screened at the Fantasia International Film Festival:
After growing up as tight-knit friends, Danny (Alain Uy), Hing (Ron Yuan) and Jim (Mykel Shannon Jenkins) have all grown apart as adults with their own lives and responsibilities. When the death of their former sifu occurs, the group is reunited once again and decide to set out to look into his death when something doesn’t sit well with the proclamation of what happened to him is revealed. Made on a small budget but prepared to make a big splash as part of this year’s Fantasia line-up, Bao Tran’s Paper Tigers follows three middle-aged former martial artists who have to brush up their old skills when suspicions develop about the sudden death of their old sifu. They’re not as fit as they used to be but they soon realise that they’ll need to improve if they’re to have any hope of getting to the truth, defending the honour of their school or even staying alive. Fighting and comedy come together in this entertaining indie. I asked its director why he decided to make a martial arts film about men of this age.
He laughs. “I think I was really interested because I was starting to become that man of a certain age.

Hulu and Marvel have announced the ensemble cast for the upcoming series Helstrom, the story of which “follows siblings and supposed serial killer offspring Daimon Helstrom (Austen) and Ana Helstrom (Lemmon). With this 10-episode ordered TV adaptation bearing origins from Marvel Comics’ 1970s horror title heyday with the series, The Son of Satan, the TV adaptation of Helstrom is sounding more like a crime-solver thriller, with the description explaining, “Daimon and Ana Helstrom are the son and daughter of a mysterious and powerful serial killer. The siblings have a complicated dynamic as they track down the terrorizing worst of humanity, each with their attitude and skills."
Paul Zbyszewski serves as showrunner and executive producer, joined in the latter capacity by the head of Marvel Television, Jeph Loeb.
Without further ado, here’s the cast lineup for Marvel’s Helstrom with their official character descriptions.
