It's no secret that Hollywood has a bit of a diversity problem. Hollywood studios are always itching to make their hefty investments a guarantee, and since it's mostly white actors that give some sort of box office guarantee, when it comes to foreign adaptations, they tend to skew white. Of course, that just leads into one vicious cycle. People of color are never given a shot to lead a film, and as such, they'll never even considered for big budget roles since the industry is so risk-averse.
This is likely the mindset they had when they cast actress Scarlett Johansson in the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi (who, as far as we know, is only being called "Major" for the film) in the Ghost In The Shell adaptation. Without a doubt, Johansson is an amazing actress capable of taking on the role, but it's more than a little bit irksome...

Dennis Iliadis’ supernatural thriller [pictured] premiered at this year’s SXSW.
IFC Midnight has acquired Us rights to Dennis Iliadis’ +1.
Iliadis’ supernatural thriller was written by Bill Gullo from a story by Iliadis and stars Rhys Wakefield, Logan Miller, Ashley Hinshaw and Natalie Hall.
It centres on three college friends who go to a party, only for it to be disrupted by a mysterious phenomenon.
The film world premiered at this year’s SXSW.
Jeff Deutchman, director of acquisitions & productions for Sundance Selects/IFC Films, negotiated the deal with CAA on behalf of the filmmakers.
Sundance Selects/IFC Films president Jonathan Sehring commented: “Dennis Iliadis has created a sexy, thrilling mind-bender that delivers on many levels. We look forward to bringing it to the widest audience possible.”
+1 was produced by Tim Perell and executive produced by Brothers Strause, Edson Williams, Thomas Nittmann and Guy Botham.
