Film icon Pam Grier has teamed with Village Roadshow Pictures to develop a project based on her bestselling 2010 memoir, “Foxy: My Life in Three Acts.”
Known as the queen of 1970s Blaxploitation classics like “Coffy” and “Foxy Brown,” plus Quentin Tarantino’s Oscar-nominated film “Jackie Brown,” Grier is enjoying her latest act thanks to movies like 2023’s “Cinnamon.” That film kicked off her relationship with Village Roadshow Pictures, which produced the title under the company’s Black Noir Cinema banner for Tubi.
“Foxy: My Life in Three Acts” details Grier’s legendary screen career; her relationships with Richard Pryor, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Freddie Prinze, among others; her experience as a Black female star in an era with rampant racism and sexism; and her battle with stage-four cervical cancer, diagnosed in 1988, when she was told she had 18 months to live.

The title "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" has been attached to several pieces of media over the decades. The best-known version is the Cyndi Lauper song, which came close to topping the pop charts when it came out in 1983. Lauper's tune, however, was a feminist remake of a 1979 song by Robert Hazard.
Lauper's single was so popular in the 1980s that it spawned dozens of other professional artists to record or sing their own versions. And in 1985, it also inspired New World Pictures to put out a romantic comedy of the same name that starred Sarah Jessica Parker and Helen Hunt. The film did a modest $6.3 million at the box office relative to its cost. It arguably could have done better if Lauper allowed her song to be used in the film — she refused, however, and Hazard's original version was used instead. Despite that, the feature has left enough...

Amazon’s MGM division is in final negotiations for worldwide distribution rights to a “Night of the Living Dead” sequel from director Nikyatu Jusu. The follow-up to George Romero’s horror classic will come courtesy of Village Roadshow Pictures, Vertigo Entertainment, Westbrook, Origin Story and the late Romero’s Sanibel Films.
Presuming the distribution deal comes to pass, the film, penned by “The Walking Dead” scribe Latoya Morgan, will be distributed by MGM as a theatrical release.
Released in 1968, “Night of the Living Dead” is considered one of the most influential and profitable theatrical films ever made. It essentially birthed the modern zombie movie (and the modern MPA ratings system) upon its release and led to decades of rip-offs, homages and zombie-specific media such as “The Walking Dead,” “Resident Evil” and Romero’s own ongoing zombie series like “Dawn of the Dead” in 1978 and “Survival of the Dead” in 2009.

A follow-up to the 130M-plus grossing movie Law Abiding Citizen is happening with producer Lucas Foster and screenwriter Kurt Wimmer returning, as well as Gerard Butler and his G-Base partner Alan Siegel reprising their roles as producers.
The storyline is being kept secrets. The first movie starred Butler and Jamie Foxx and was directed by F. Gary Gray, and followed assistant district attorney Nick Rice’s (Foxx) pursuit of Clyde Shelton (Butler), a frustrated father who implements an elaborate and twisted plan to bring down the entire judicial system in Philadelphia after a plea bargain sets free the man who murdered his wife and daughter. The pic in December on Netflix became one of the top three most viewed movies alongside Dwayne Johnson and Ryan Reynolds’ Red Notice and Sandra Bullock’s The Unforgivable.
Rivulet Films’ Rob Paris and Mike Witherill are producing alongside Foster and Wimmer. Foster will produce under his Warp Films banner.

When Village Roadshow CEO Steve Mosko first met with Kevin Garnett to discuss the basketball star’s pivot to the world of entertainment, the longtime film executive says it was immediately clear that the NBA champion’s Content Cartel production company wasn’t merely a vanity label.
“He just laid out how passionate he was about the business and building his company, and was beyond impressive,” Mosko tells Variety in a phone interview, recounting the lunch meeting. “I knew he just wasn’t another athlete who wanted a production shingle so he could tell his friends he has a production shingle.”
Beyond passion, Garnett came to the table with ideas. As the duo, who were introduced by Garnett’s “Uncut Gems” co-star Adam Sandler, discussed what they loved about cinema, the topic of Blaxploitation films came up.
“[Kevin] looked at me and — it was very heartfelt — he said, ‘Growing up as a kid,...

The BloodList, an annual ranking of the best unproduced horror and genre screenplays, has published the 13th edition of its “Fresh Blood” series just in time for Halloween.
The reveal was made on Friday by Village Roadshow Pictures and Brillstein Entertainment Partners, who earlier this year announced a first-look partnership to mine the list for feature films. BloodList was created by Kailey Marsh, who is a literary manager and producer at Brillstein.
The two projects that Village Roadshow has selected for development are “On the First Day of Christmas” by Casey Giltner and “Zero Feet Away” by Jose Nateras. Gitner’s script follows a little girl who begins receiving sinister Christmas presents coinciding with the traditions of “The 12 Days of Christmas.” In Nateras’ script, a young man’s love life is complicated by his identity as a gay, Mexican American, and werewolf — while his actual life is put in danger...

If ever there was a market susceptible to hype, it's Sundance. After all, Hollywood buyers have all trekked to a remote mountain location to find the next hidden gem that will either turn a profit in theaters or earn some Oscar love a year later (or, ideally, both). But that feat is easier said than done as groupthink often reigns once inside a cramped Eccles Theatre. "You're trying to separate the buzz of what you hear people saying about a film and what your instinct is," says 30West's Tristen Tuckfield.

Coming into its second Cannes Film Festival since Micah Green left his post as CAA Film Finance and Sales Group co-head to partner with Texas-based billionaire Dan Friedkin in 30West, the company has lived up to its promise as a disruptive force in the indie film space.
If it was initially hard to figure out 30West’s place in the ecosystem, the plan is now becoming clear: Simply put, the company is something of a gas station, fueling the tanks of progressive companies, film and TV projects. Their focus is split between three main disciplines: single picture financing, P&A funding with some direct investment, and some investment from third parties.
The third concentration is in the corporate investments area, and the company’s first deal came with the acquisition of a majority stake in Neon after teaming with Tom Quinn’s distribution company on the successful I, Tonya. Then the companies teamed up again,...

“We can’t be greedy any more. The stars should not be making so much money.”
The UK Film Centre in Cannes was heaving this weekend for the ’New Dealmakers’ panel, which saw leading financiers discussed the rapidly changing independent film landscape.
“Every single Cannes, we’re all worse off then the previous one. Everyone is complaining every year that it gets worse…and worse and worse,” Head Gear’s Phil Hunt noted of the gloom that sometimes grips the Marché Du Film.
Hunt pointed to the ambivalent impact of the “big digital giants” like Netflix and Amazon on the business.

Strategically opportunistic financing company 30West has been a whirling dervish of activity, from its Sundance acquisition of a controlling stake in distributor Neon to hiring away 24-year Sundance programming veteran Trevor Groth, who will join the company in February and hit the ground running in Berlin. Clearly, 30West partners Dan Friedkin, the Texas entrepreneur behind The Friedkin Group consortium, and ex-CAA agent and Cinetic Media executive Micah Green, are scooping up the talent they think will best take their company into the rapidly evolving future.
The company’s stated goal: to provide full-service support to help filmmakers package and produce their films, find financing and distribution, and reach the largest possible audience. 30West also arranged the financing for Sony’s “All the Money in the World,” directed by Ridley Scott and starring Oscar-nominated Christopher Plummer, which was produced by Friedkin’s Imperative Entertainment.
