Medicare and Social Security are no longer on the chopping block in Sen. Rick Scott’s much-criticized Rescue America plan.
The Florida senator updated the proposal to specify that he want to sunset all federal legislation in five years except “Social Security, Medicare, national security, veterans benefits, and other essential services.”

Over the past four years, many members of the Republican Party have gotten extremely good at doing a little dance with extremism. It’s a cute ritual. They flirt with a transgressive policy, make sure it has every possibility of becoming part of our lives, and then publicly express grave concern and disappointment when that policy becomes widespread. The best recent example of this has been the GOP’s reaction to the Jan. 6 insurrection and the Big Lie conspiracy theories that fuel the far-right’s desire to overturn President Biden’s election win.

On the fifth anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting, President Joe Biden called on Congress to pass gun reform and announced that he will designate the club as a national memorial.
“Five years ago today in Orlando in the middle of pride month, our nation suffered the deadliest attack affecting the LGBTQ+ community in American history, and at the time, the deadliest mass shooting by a single gunman,” Biden said in a statement Saturday of the shooting that left 49 dead and 53 injured in 2016.

Lin Qi, founder of the Chinese video game publisher Yoozoo and a producer on Netflix’s upcoming adaptation of “The Three-Body Problem,” has been hospitalized after what Shanghai police characterized as an attempted murder plot by a colleague.
Lin was hospitalized last week with “acute symptoms of illness” believed to have stemmed from an attempted poisoning, according to the South China Morning Post. Shanghai police released a statement on Wednesday saying a 39-year-old man with the surname Xu had been identified as a suspect in a “major crime,” which local reports linked to Lin and Yoozoo.
Multiple Chinese publications identified the suspect as Xu Yao, head of the Yoozoo subsidiary The Three-Body Universe, which holds the rights to the novels being adapted by Netflix. Lin is said to be in stable condition.

Though Saturday Night Live fans initially seemed to be loving Jim Carrey in his new role of Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, the tables are now turning as his appearances on the late night sketch comedy series become increasingly over-the-top. As a matter of fact, Carrey has been trending on Twitter since showing up this past weekend, and it hasn’t been pleasant.
Saturday’s cold open satirized Biden’s town hall event from earlier in the week, but the sketch left many viewers feeling that the writers are playing too much into the actor’s tendency for loud, outrageous antics and discomforting facial manipulations that don’t feel particularly well-suited for the role of a politician known to be calm and – for all intents and purposes – normal.
Of course, this is coming only a week after Carrey turned up in a sketch as the fly that landed on Vice...

Washington — The indictment is in. It’s time to go to trial.
Last month, the House of Representatives voted to formally impeach President Trump for the high crimes of abusing his power and obstructing Congress. Impeachment articles are like a charging document, laying out the high crimes committed by the president.
Now, the action moves to the Senate, which will likely conduct the third impeachment trial in American history. Chief Justice John Roberts will preside over the trial. The proceedings could start as early as Wednesday.

Larry Vaughn was the mayor of a small Northeastern town for several years several decades ago when — yes, sure, okay fine — several people were eaten by giant sharks.
But the sharks (and the people they ate, toothy bite by toothy bite) are not what have kept Vaughn’s name in the headlines.
He may have just been the fictional mayor of Amity Island in the first two Jaws movies, but his short-sighted resistance toward protecting people from the sharks keeps his legacy alive and well. Forty-four years after Jaws made him no more than the fifth-most important character in one...

“We’re not what you think we are,” says a spokesman for the Satanic Temple near the start of the documentary Hail Satan? That question mark in the title is important, as neither director Penny Lane, nor we, are never quite sure how sincere the members of the Satanic Temple are about being a church. What we are sure of is their sincerity about championing the separation of church and state, and freedom of religion.
The question mark in the documentary’s title Hail Satan? is director Penny Lane’s, not the members of the Satanic Temple, who loudly and proudly use the phrase in their events. But they do not actually worship Satan, as spokesman/co-founder Lucien Greaves quickly makes clear.

Ava DuVernay, John Leguizamo, and Laura Poitras have added their signatures to a letter fighting against the impending deportation of Claudio Rojas, subject of the documentary “The Infiltrators.” The non-fiction feature from directors Alex Rivera and Cristina Ibarra debuted in Park City earlier this year to strong reviews, with IndieWire’s Eric Kohn saying it made a “strong case for abolishing Ice.”
Rojas is a native of Argentina but has lived in the United States for 19 years. The International Documentary Association said in a memo that Rojas has been detained by Ice and is now being held at the Krome Detention Center in South Miami-Dade after what should have been a routine check-in. Rojas is now facing deportation as early as sometime this week.
“We feel strongly that detaining a protagonist of a documentary film has a chilling effect on those whose stories we tell as documentary journalists, and restricts...
