There are very few movies that create a universal talking point. In the recent past we have seen this happen with Baahubali when everyone was curious about ‘Katappa ne Bahubali ko kyu mara’, which was the cliff-hanger of the first part. On the same lines Drishyam had so much of impact on the audience that its key plot became almost synonym with the date 2nd October!
Drishyam was made by the master storyteller late Nishikant Kamat on the story by Jeethu Joseph. Post the sad demise of Nishikant Kamat the director’s baton was passed on to Abhishek Pathak. One would understand the uphill task that he would have gone through with a benchmark already set in terms of Drishyam and not just that, but Drishyam 2 already released in various south languages and already available on Ott platforms. (Actor Sharad Kelkar has worked with the late filmmaker Nishikant Kamat twice, in the critically acclaimed Marathi film "Lai Bhaari" and the Bollywood flick "Rocky Handsome". For Sharad, "Nishi sir" was more of a mentor and a friend than a director. The filmmaker passed away on August 17 at the age of 50 after battling liver cirrhosis for the past two years)
By Sharad Kelkar
Mumbai, Aug 19 (Ians) I knew Nishi sir for the past 12 or 13 years. We had a common group and used to meet quite often. At that time, I was working television and he was making films. Whenever we used to meet, weekly or once in a fortnight, we use to have a lot of fun. We never discussed work. He was a senior and a good friend. Out of the blue, one fine morning he called me and offered me 'Lai Bhaari', and I instantly agreed to do the role.

(Actress Ishita Dutta started her Bollywood career with late filmmaker Nishikant Kamat's 2015 thriller, "Drishyam". She played the pivotal role of Ajay Devgns daughter in the film. Ishita recalls Kamat as a supportive confidant, the best director for any newcomer)

I was a last-minute casting in ‘Drishyam'. I was extremely nervous and scared. I remember him (Nishikant Kamat) sitting by me on the first day of the shoot and trying to boost my morale. He acted as my confidant throughout the film.
It was encouraging for a newcomer to get an opportunity to work with a director like him. He showed faith in me. If I was able to do justice to my character, it was because of him.
Whenever I have spoken about the film, I have always mentioned how supportive he and his team members were. For any newcomer he was the best director -- at least,...

Bollywood hasn’t had a very good run when it comes to superhero movies. While the “Krrish” trilogy and “Ra.One” were commercially successful chiefly because of their star power, they were generally disliked by viewers and critics alike and films like “Alag”, “Drona” or “A Flying Jatt” barely registered with the audience. Director Vikramaditya Motwane, whose films are usually known to be gritty and realistic, is surprisingly the latest to try and bring us a superhero film unlike any we’ve seen so far.

Bhavesh Joshi Superhero

Directed by Vikramditya Motwane
Rating: ****(4 Stars)
Harshvardhan Kapoor doesn’t play the title role in Bhavesh Joshi. Anyone could. This is a film about pricking awake the conscience, so well written, and so successful in downplaying the image of the typical hero. Anyone could be that prick.
On the other hand no one really bothers. Why should they when all you get for trying to change the status quo is a death in the gutter? What makes this film an important testament on the need to make your voice of protest is the language used to convey that urgent need to raise one’s voice.

Cinema "An actor is defined by his life experiences and how convincingly he is portraying his characters on-screen and getting acceptance for his performance," he said. IANSImage source: actormaddy/Instagram By Arundhuti Banerjee From the crazy fun loving college boy Maddy in Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein to rubbing shoulders with the iconic Kamal Hassan in Anbe Sivam, from the business journalist Shyam Saxena in Guru to Manu of the Tanu Weds Manu series - R Madhavan has done it all and more. With his new web series Breathe, he says he is growing with each film and each experience of life. In a 20-year career, Madhavan has done very selective work, whether in the south Indian film industry or in Hindi cinema. What made him be so choosy about selecting projects? "An actor is defined by his life experiences and how convincingly he is portraying his characters on-screen and getting acceptance for his performance. When it comes to the acceptance of my performance from the audience, even though the films did not do well at the box office for a film like Ramji Londonwaley, my effort has always been appreciated. "That made me confident about my choices. I understood the fact that slowly but steadily, I am growing," Madhavan told Ians. "I have been working on my skills and that will continue. See, the world's biggest superstars earn the status of a superstar in their late 40s and 50s. If you ask me about me being choosy, I would say I am not. I just do not want to feel burnt out by the time I reach 50," said the actor, 47. "See, I cannot dance, I do not have a well-built body, neither do I have an adorable look that a superstar has. But yes, I am earning respect with my substantial work." The actor who calls himself "less than a superstar like Shah Rukh Khan" yet considers himself "moderately famous", has worked with some of the noted names like Mani Ratnam, Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra, Nishikant Kamat, Rajkumar Hirani, Aanand L Rai, Amitabh Bachchan, Kamal Hassan and Naseeruddin Shah among others. According to Madhavan, working with these creative geniuses made him understand the craft much better. "More than directors, I have learnt a lot from the iconic actors that I have worked with. Since I come from a non-film background, I have no formal training in acting. Everything -- from camera angle to how much one should express on face, is based on the length of the shot... Everything (like this) I have learnt from these legends. I learnt on the job and from my life experience." Asked about the best lesson he learnt, he said: "That you have to bring some amount of realness to the character you play. It has to look like a real world, if not completely real world, it has to be a homogeneous world where every action would look real. If you watch a Lion King you believe in that world. When we watch Spiderman, we feel the real emotion of the character." So, now that the Amazon Prime web series Breathe is streaming and film offers are coming his way as usual, does he want to explore Bollywood more or focus on his career in the south? "I can explore both the cinema worlds. Why do I need to choose one? These days, whether in Tamil or Hindi cinema, both are growing with immense experimentation. So, I see no reason for choosing one over another," Madhavan said. (Arundhuti Banerjee can be contacted at arundhuti.b@ians.in)...

Ask any actor of some worth. It is not easy to play a known living character. Audiences and the character that you are playing, plus their close associates, judge the performance with scrutinized harshness and normally find it wanting.
Not this time. Not Arun Gawli. Not Arjun Rampal who has shaped into one of Hindi cinema’s most dependable actors who does his roles with such smooth efficiency and such noiseless excellence that we are liable to miss the point.
Don’t make the mistake of confusing Arjun’s laidback wisdom in portraying the gangster-philanthropist-parliamentarian-convict Arun Gawle, as a Devganesque laziness. This is a power-packed implosive performance. Rampal plays Gawli as a time bomb waiting to explode. There are no extra toppings, fringe benefits, perks or bonuses to this performance.

The Irrfan Khan starrer Madaari was set to open in cinemas on July 15, along with the Inder Kumar-directed adult comedy Great Grand Masti. However, in yet another case of pre-release piracy, Great Grand Masti leaked online on multiple torrent sites, creating a dent in its potential box office collections.
Madaari’s director, Nishikant Kamat, has revealed that he, along with his producers, have decided to push the release date of his film, thereby giving Great Grand Masti a clear window in the cinemas.
In a statement shared with the press, director Nishikant Kamat said, “While we were apprehensive to shift our date to 22 July, we felt strongly that the cause of piracy owing to the leak of Great Grand Masti was more crucial, and as creative people we must all support each other and create an eco-system where we hopefully can survive through such tactical ways to fight back things like piracy.

Salman Khan's Eid release has created havoc at the box office. The immediate casualty is Irrfan Khan starrer Madaari which was to open next week, on July 15. Seeing the enormity of Sultan's success the Irrfan Khan starrer about a vigilante's vendetta against the establishment has been pushed ahead by a week, leaving the coast clear for another uninterrupted week of box office supremacy of Salman's Sultan act.
Explaining the decision to push the film ahead, Madaari director Nishikant Kamat expresses helplessness and resignation. "It is unfortunate, but what to do? We are caught in a kind of chain reaction. Irrfan Khan has not only become a name to reckon with in the Hindi film industry, but is also sought after by filmmakers in the West, thanks to his ability of portraying diverse roles on screen effortlessly. After the successful and critically acclaimed Piku, the actor will now be seen in Nishikant Kamat’s Madaari as a vigilante.
In a recent interview, Irrfan spoke about his motive behind taking up Madaari, “To raise questions. The intention was also to ask questions, such as ‘where would a common man go when something goes wrong, even though there are various departments?’ Our judiciary (In India) is so overloaded. There are many instances of our sticking to the laws that were made decades ago. As a country, we have to ask questions collectively to bring change. Sometimes, you have a story that you wish to reflect on through cinema although you are not an activist.

The makers of the sex comedy Great Grand Masti must be congratulating themselves for their quick-thinking strategy of preponing their film after it was leaked online. The film, which was to be released on July 22, would now be released on July 15, thereby generating an unexpected competition for Nishikant Kamat's political thriller Madaari featuring Irrfan Khan. Madaari has now been shifted from July 15 to July 22 since the high-profile Great Grand Masti's producers Balaji Films and Ashok Thakeria were expected to now block a majority of the screens and theatres for the sex comedy, leaving Madaari with the leftover outlets on July 15. While outwardly, the Madaari team feigns resignation at the unexpected turn of events, a source from the film says angrily, "This is the exactly kind of intrusion that kills the movie business. We had announced Madaari for July 15 three months back. Suddenly, this raunchy sex comedy comes to bite us from behind.

Madaari, the thriller directed by Nishikant Kamat which opens on 10 June will feature Irrfan Khan as a vigilante seeking non-legal redress for a flyover that comes crashing down in a busy part of Mumbai. For the first time director Nishikant Kamat admits that the film is based on the ghastly collapse of an under-construction metro bridge in Andheri Mumbai on September 4, 2012. But Kamat says the real-life accident is the triggering point for the plot. "The incident is just a backdrop. My film is plotted around the repercussions of this incident." The director doesn't deny the real-life parallel. "Madaari is about an under-construction metro bridge which fell a couple of years back in Andheri, Mumbai. But if you recollect my 2008 film Mumbai Meri Jaan, it also was based on the backdrop of a tragic catastrophe, namely the Mumbai train bombings on July 11, 2006. But the film was about human emotions. As usual...

The producers of Rocky Handsome have kept their promise of delivering “Never Ever Seen Before Hand to Hand Action in an Indian Film”.
This is what John Abraham and Sunir Kheterpal had promised right through the promotional campaign of the Nishikant Kamat directed Rocky Handsome. Nishikant had corroborated the same. Guess, they were saying this in all the right earnest!
While there have been numerous hand-to-hand combat sequences that have been seen in films from Bollywood as well as Hollywood, what has been on display in Rocky Handsome is truly a new experience, at least for those who have grown up on Hindi films.
Now that’s what makes Rocky Handsome a paisa vasool affair. Add to that the ‘seeti maar’ interval point and you know that John Abraham has pretty much set this film for the audience that loves to see its hero emerge victorious after bashing up 10-20-30 baddies in a go.
