The great city of Liverpool has been well served by the sitcom industry over the years. The Liver Birds, Boys from the Blackstuff, Bread, The Royle Family. These are all highly successful and highly watchable, if occasionally mordant. They all fell into a bit of a pattern – a recipe of sorts, like Scouse itself (originally a stew of course) – with similar essential ingredients: wit, irreverence, strong women carrying weak men, a family theme, and a certain sassy style.
ITV’s latest stab at sitcom success, The Family Pile, falls uneasily into this line of succession. In this case, the mixture is: four sisters recently bereaved; three husbands-slash partners; three kids; one affair between a sister and another sister’s hubby; and one very large house. With the recent death of the siblings’ mum, following closely on from that of their dad, eldest sister Nicole (Amanda Abbington) sneakily puts their childhood home on the market,...

ITV has unveiled a slate of new comedy commissions, most of which will premiere on Itvx, its upcoming free streaming service.
New comedy titles include “Plebs: Soldiers of Rome,” “Deep Fake Neighbour Wars,” “Ruby Speaking Count,” “Abdulla” and “Significant Other.”
“The arrival of Itvx gives us more opportunities to commission a broad range of comedies and a dedicated place for the genre to call home,” said Nana Hughes, ITV’s Head of Comedy. The executive added that ITV aspired to showcase a “huge cross section of contemporary, diverse and inclusive comedy.”
“We want to take risks but most importantly we want our audiences to find shows that reflect them and make them laugh,” Hughes continued.
“Plebs: Soldiers of Rome” is a a feature-length special based on the award-winning comedy series “Plebs” which has had five successful seasons. “Plebs” is directed and written by Sam Leifer and co-written by Tom Basden.

So, this Friday is the beginning of the three day weekend that usually kicks off Summer vacation time. But with the lockdown somewhat still in effect (parts of the country are testing the “re-opening waters”), every day feels part of a “stay-cation” holiday as the luggage continues to gather new layers of dust in the back of the closet. Well, there’s always a virtual “vacay” via streaming services. Now, we’re not talking about a collection of the old travelogue film shorts we sometimes see between the features on the TCM cable channel. Nope, this is a brand-spanking’ new flick shot before the world changed (nearly to a standstill), but with a couple of most familiar and entertaining guides. We know that because over the last decade we’ve joined them (as a “fly on the wall”), first through the British Isles, then to Italy, again in Spain. Time...

When The Trip first came out, I don’t think anyone necessarily intended for it to become a franchise. However, now four movies later, it has become a very unique beast. About as far removed from the Marvel Cinematic Universe as possible, these flicks are a hybrid of documentary, cooking/travel show, and British sitcom. Somehow, the mixture has worked beautifully, with The Trip to Greece completing the quartet. A very light case of diminishing returns is in evidence here, but this is still a very funny film with a lot to offer, provided you like English humor and admiring good food. If that sounds up your alley, this is going to be a real treat when it hits Digital on Friday. This film is the final installment in The Trip series, beginning with that title (initially having started life as a television show), and continuing with The Trip to Italy,...

"Let me swim to the sirens!" They're back!! For one last travel adventure. IFC Films has unveiled an official trailer for The Trip to Greece, the fourth film in Michael Winterbottom's comedic The Trip series, which launched in 2010 with just The Trip (around the UK). Then followed up with The Trip to Italy in 2014, The Trip to Spain in 2017, and now The Trip to Greece in 2020. Rob Brydon and Steve Coogan return as old friends traveling together, in what is being marketed as their final journey. Though who knows, maybe we'll see another one a few years down the road? There's many more places to go... The Trip to Greece also stars Kareem Alkabbani, Marta Barrio, Rebecca Johnson, and Claire Keelan. These seem to be getting better and better, and they look like so much fun. Plus all the food! And the sights! To die for, right? A much...

"We should enjoy this moment guys, we're in the sweet spot." IFC Films has debuted another new official Us trailer for The Trip to Spain, to compliment the first teaser trailer from a few months ago. The Trip to Spain is the second sequel in The Trip series (after The Trip to Italy in 2014), starring Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon as friends who go on a road trip wining and dining and doing impersonations. Early word from critics is that this is just as hilarious and ridiculous as the first two films, and might be a good bit of entertainment to catch at your local art house later this summer. The cast also includes Marta Barrio and Claire Keelan. These films don't seem like they should work as well as they do, but damnit, they are fun. Here's the official Us trailer for Michael Winterbottom's The Trip to Spain,...

It’s been four years since The Trip To Italy. Now comes IFC’s third film in the series, The Trip To Spain, from director Michael Winterbottom.
After jaunts through northern England and Italy, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon embark on another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. This time around, the guys head to Spain to sample the best of the country’s gastronomic offerings in between rounds of their hilariously off-the-cuff banter. Over plates of pintxos and paella, the pair exchange barbs and their patented celebrity impressions, as well as more serious reflections on what it means to settle into middle age. As always, the locales are breathtaking, the cuisine to die for, and the humor delightfully devilish.
The film opens in theaters August 11, 2017.
Steve’s film career includes five films with Michael Winterbottom.

There will be no shortage of franchise films arriving this year, but perhaps our most-anticipated is the latest entry into The Trip series. Made for television in the U.K. then released as films over here, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are now back with their third entry, The Trip to Spain. Ahead of a premiere at Tribeca Film Festival next month, the first teaser trailer has now been released.
This preview for Michael Winterbottom‘s latest is a simple one, finding the duo making melodies on a drive as quotes flash by along with a brief series recap. Despite being quite the tease, this (and the first clip) is more than enough to sell us on what’s sure to be one of the most enjoyable viewing experiences of the year. Also starring Marta Barrio, Claire Keelan, and Margo Stilley, check out the trailer below.

Originally published two years ago, we re-present our look back at Nathan Barley to mark its 10-year anniversary
10 years since Channel 4 aired Nathan Barley, Charlie Brooker's "self-facilitating media node" has gone from absurdist parody to frightening reality.
A flop when it originally aired, but a cult hit on DVD, Nathan Barley is love-it-or-hate it telly. From Brass Eye creator Chris Morris, it was edgy, raw and often hilarious.
Brimming with up-and-coming talent like Brooker (Dead Set), Julian Barratt (The Mighty Boosh), and fellow Booshers Noel Fielding and Richard Ayoade, as well as some blink-and-you'll-miss-'em cameos from Stephen Mangan (Episodes), Mat Horne (Gavin & Stacey) and Sherlock's Benedict Cumberbatch, we think it's time Nathan Barley was given the praise it deserved.
Inspired by a mock TV show called C**t from Brooker's satirical TVGoHome website, the show follows two East Londoners: Nathan Barley (Nicholas Burns), the "self facilitating media...

As the Summer winds down to a precious few last days, many folks wait until the season’s last hurrah, the Labor Day holiday, to finally “get outta’ Dodge”. If you can’t find the time or funds perhaps you can head to the theatre and watch someone else hit the trail. A few weeks ago movie goers watched two men of a certain mature age head off for adventure in Iceland in Land Ho in an improvisational pseudo-documentary. Well, now two seasoned comedy pros who scored with a similar flick a few years back have returned to vacation once more. Now I’m not talking about a re-discovered, unearthed from the film vaults Hope and Crosby road picture. No sir, this is the return of a more recent comedy team: Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon, and unlike most teams they take turns being the straight man. Four years ago...

In this weekend’s specialty box-office debuts, IFC Films hopes to replicate the critical and commercial success of Michael Winterbottom’s first amusing little travelogue/talker of a feature, The Trip, with a semi-sequel, The Trip To Italy. The second Trip again stars Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon; the entertainingly garrulous pair on yet another jaunt across restaurants, countryside and philosophy. The latest Trip will bow in NYC and La this weekend after a successful Australian run earlier this summer (or their winter).
Frank, a British-Irish-American drama from Magnolia Pictures featuring Michael Fassbender that had runs at Sundance and SXSW, bows in only one U.S. theater this weekend. Frank centers on an eccentric band, giving Fassy fans a chance to hear the Oscar-nominated actor sing, albeit from behind a mask (he’s not bad, actually).
Other notable new films include Philippe Garrel‘s Jealousy, which Distrib Films will expand...

The Buzz: I was completely unaware of this film until about two weeks ago, when I first saw the trailer. Seems it snuck up on everyone, as there hasn’t been much buzz about it at all. Owen Wilson, Jack Black and Steve Martin are all, of course, potential of amazing comedy cinema, and it’ll be interest to see how the three play off of each other. The boys over at Quietearth scored a the trailer for upcoming Brit horror Hush last week, now to complete the set, we’ve been given first look at the poster and news on the release date. The début film from writer and director Mark Tonderai (the ex Radio 1 and Kiss FM DJ), Hush stars Will Ash, Christine Bottomley, Claire Keelan, Stuart McQuarrie, Robbie Gee, Sheila Reid And Andreas Wisniewski. We’ve already seen it and have to say - considering it only cost £1 million to make, it’s a damn sight better than a lot of horror movies out there at the moment. Optimum Releasing are set to open the flick theatrically on March 13th. Keep em peeled for our Hush review, next week. Synopsis : Tired and irritable, Zakes (Will Ash) and Beth (Christine Bottomley) drive home along the M1 motorway, a familiar journey full of harshly lit service stations and bad coffee.
