Randy Wilkins connects with Derek Jeter, subject of his seven-part ESPN documentary series, The Captain, on a few levels.
For starters, Wilkins is a lifelong New York Yankees fan, and Jeter was the linchpin of five World Series championships captured by the team between 1996 and 2009. In his filmmaking career, Wilkins also can relate. While he wasn’t a teen-ager like Jeter when he got his big break, getting the chance to tell the story of his hero resulted from a surprise endorsement from Spike Lee, who is an executive producer of the series.
“In June 2020, he called me to check up on me,” Wilkins recalled in an interview. “He asked me who my favorite Yankee was, just out of the blue. I said, ‘Well, Derek Jeter.’ I was very confused as to why he was asking me that. And the next thing he said was, ‘Derek Jeter wants to do...

Randy Wilkins, who directed the upcoming Derek Jeter ESPN Films documentary series “The Captain,” had one word to describe the topic he had to drag out of the stoic Hall-of-Fame shortstop: “Alex.”
New York Yankees fans in attendance at the June 12 Tribeca Festival Q&a following the first episode’s premiere got a kick out of that one. Jeter, who sat calmly on the Bmcc Tribeca Performing Arts Center stage beside Wilkins, perhaps did not. Wilkins, of course, was referring to Alex Rodriguez, an all-time-great Major League Baseball infielder in his own right. Jeter and A-Rod famously did not get along after the Yankees signed Seattle Mariners and Texas Rangers star Rodriguez (whom many baseball pundits believed to be the superior shortstop).
Jeter held his literal ground on the left side of the infield: A-Rod switched positions to third base, and what had been an easy friendship forged at All-Star Games was never the same.

If we told young Scotty Smalls that Brett Gardner played him in a re-creation of a scene from The Sandlot, he probably wouldn't know who the guy is. And not just because he's a character from half a century ago. "Smalls" didn't even know who Babe Ruth was, and if the movie took place today, he surely wouldn't know any of the current roster of the New York Yankees. Of course, in the movie, that little ignorant kid grows up to be a very knowlegeable sportscaster covering Major League Baseball. He has to know who Gardner is, as well as his fellow Yankees Jacoby Ellsbury, Dellin Betances, C.C. Sabathia, Chase Headley, Didi Gregorius and Brian McCann. And he'd get a big kick out of seeing those players redoing the memorable Babe Ruth scene from...

Scotty Smalls sure isn't small anymore! That's because a fully grown New York Yankee (outfielder Brett Gardner) is portraying The Sandlot's star! Gardner and teammates Jacoby Ellsbury, Dellin Betances, C.C. Sabathia, Didi Gregorius and Brian McCann (as the Sandlot kids, of course) recreated a scene from the iconic 1993 baseball movie for Mlb.com. The fellas' acting chops aren't quite on par with their athletic talents, but what they lack in theatrical skill they more than make up for in charm. David M. Evans' The Sandlot is easily one of the most beloved baseball films of the modern era, and strangely enough, it's now is probably a movie that today's Major League players grew up watching. Certainly adding credence to that idea is this new video recorded by members of the New York Yankees, who recreated one of the feature's best scenes. As a fan of the New York Mets, it's kind of in my blood to feel a tad bit of scorn for the Yankees at all times, but credit is due to Brett Gardner, Jacoby Ellsbury, Cc Sabathia, Brian McCann, Didi Gregorius and the rest of the players in this video for making a funny, fitting tribute to The Sandlot. It started just over a year ago. On September 1st 2011, the Boston Red Sox finished off their three-game series with their bitter rivals and Al East foes the New York Yankees knowing that whilst a defeat wasn’t a good thing, they would be leaving Beantown atop of the division regardless of the result. Nobody could have predicted then what fate awaited them less than a month later. After all, the Red Sox seemingly had the foundations in place for another tilt at the World Series, with many in the media tipping them to win it all and Espn analyst Bobby Valentine even going so far as to predict they’d “score 1,000 runs” on the season. Led by the best manager in the game, Terry Francona, and overseen by boy genius Gm Theo Epstein, life seemed pretty good for the Red Sox and their fans. That’s what made the events that followed so extraordinary.

Looks like the Yankees just caught another tough break.
Just hours after the club announced that strongman C.C. Sabathia is going on the disabled list with a groin strain (ha!), Andy Pettitte broke his ankle when he was smitten with a one-hop scorcher off the bat of Indians first baseman Casey Kotchman Wednesday afternoon. Pettitte is expected to be out for at least six weeks.
As terrible a blow as this is to the Yankees, fans of the Bronx Bombers should be thanking their lucky stars that the 40-year-old Pettitte didn't also fall and break a hip. Ha!
The badly timed injuries leaves the Yankees rotation once again in tatters. Ivan Nova has been great this year and Phil Hughes has been better lately, but no team, not even the Yankees, can afford to lose two quality left-handed starters at the same time. So say a prayer for the New York Yankees,...

Interleague play came at the perfect time for the Detroit Tigers - and the rest of the American League may be paying the price for the remainder of the season.
The Tigers, like the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Angels, have gotten fat against the National League the past 10 games. The Tigers entered the interleague portion of the schedule at 26-31, riddled with injuries and looking like they may never find their groove. But find it they have against the Nl, running off a 7-3 record to pull back to a game under .500, and now that the Tigers are rolling a bit they aren't likely to slow down, even when they return to Al competition.
The Yankees are slamming the Nl as well. They swept the Al East-leading Nationals in Washington the other day, and own a 10-1 record in their last ten against the Nl.

Mets fans had to wait 50 years for the first no hitter in franchise history, so we all demured out of pity and didn't make too much fuss about how Johan Santana actually gave up a double. So it makes some sad sense of balance now that fellow Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey tossed a real no-hitter last night against the Tampa Bay Rays, but isn't getting credit for it (at least not yet... more on that later).
In the books, R.A. Dickey threw a complete game, one-hitter last night.
But in the first inning last night, the Rays' speedy Justin Upton hit a two hopper to Mets third baseman David Wright. It was a routine play, even with Upton's speed. But Wright misjudged the play, thought he had to rush, and tried to bare hand the ball. He could have gloved it and gotten Upton with a strong throw.
