As Emmy voting comes to a close, score mixer Phil McGowan could find himself with multiple nominations, having worked on the sound of Paramount+’s “Star Trek: Picard,” Netflix’s “Cobra Kai” and “Ozark,” and Roku’s “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
He spoke with Variety about his approach to each project and what needed to be taken into consideration to preserve the sonic integrity in his mixes.
“Cobra Kai”
“This season was bigger and more maximal than previous seasons, but there wasn’t a big sonic shift. However, each episode is like a movie. Composers Leo Birenberg and Zach Robinson approach it like it’s another ‘Karate Kid’ film. There are guitars, a drum kit, drum machines and lots of percussion. They use a lot of samples that are reminiscent of the 1980s and ’90s. So, I have fun applying mixing techniques with reverb that blends ’80s hair metal...

Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard not only reunited all of the Next Generation crew, but also gave them a fitting sendoff for which fans have been waiting since the 2002 film Star Trek: Nemesis. It wasn’t easy for anyone, including composer Stephen Barton.
Barton admits, however, that he painted himself, or composed himself rather, into a corner.
“We decided we were going to try to score all of it which meant writing seven hours of music,” Barton said during a panel for the CBS/Paramount+ series at Deadline’s Sound & Screen event. “I think about four hours in I was literally dead, absolutely. I was doing seven days weeks, 16-hour days, I hadn’t seen my family. It was absolutely brutal.”
Normally TV shows can reuse pre-existing tracks. Barton’s goal to compose an all-new score for Season 3 wore him down. He credits showrunner Terry Malalas with suggesting they...

Longtime listeners of our Corpse Club podcast may be aware that Patrick Bromley (founder of the excellent F This Movie! The best of DC Comics’ Elseworlds stories where when the writers challenged the conventional wisdom, upending how we envisioned our heroes. Among the more celebrated of these stories was Mark Millar and Dave Johnson’s Superman: Red Son, imagining the Kryptonian rocket ship landing in Soviet Russia, not Kansas.

The Hush storyline by Jeph Loeb, Jim Lee, and Scott Williams was a smash sales success because it safely followed the Loeb formula of a 12-issue mystery that enveloped every major member of the rogues’ gallery. First, there was the Holiday killed and the making of Two-Face and here we have the new threat of Hush which connects to young Bruce Wayne’s childhood.
To fit this into the connected Animated Universe, Batman: Hush, out now from Warner Home Entertainment, a host of changes had to be made. The one that did not need alteration is the one that entirely spoils the final third of the 82-minute film.
I’ve not been fond of veteran animation writer Ernie Altbacker’s previous forays into the Dcau, but this contains some of his finest moments. Coupled with above-average source material and fine character designs, this is one of the stronger-looking films in a while.

Doomsday. The unstoppable engine of destruction also appears to be the unstoppable antagonist having been a regular in the comics since 1992 and brought to the animated and live-action films. The sheer power on display is catnip and allows DC Comics’ most powerful figure to go mano y mano.
The DC Animated Universe of direct-to-video films has been uneven, usually a result of either poor writing, bad directing, or off-putting character design. That they are now linked, building a shared universe is a small pleasure as the producers mine the comics for stories to adapt and weave into their mythos.

Aquaman finally gets his due in Justice League: Throne of Atlantis, out now from Warner Home Entertainment. In the latest installment in the new linked video continuity, all inspired by the uninspiring New 52 reality. As is fitting in a spotlight film like this, Aquaman’s origins are explored so we also get the tried and true enmity between Arthur Curry and Orm, the Ocean Master. There’s lots of shouting, fighting, fish, and Sturm und Drang but honestly, not a lot of warmth and emotion—much like the current source material.

I love the art of animation, and it's amazing to see how far things have come and advanced over the years. The industry is changing in terms of technology, but what it all really comes down to is telling good stories. There's been a lot of great animated movies this year, and many of them are up for several awards at the 40th Annual Annie Awards.
Some of the movies nomainated include Brave, Frankenweenie, Hotel Transylvania, ParaNorman, Rise of the Guardians, The Pirates! Band of Misfits, and Wreck-It Ralph. Out of those films my favorite is a toss up between Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman, those were two pretty incredible films. I think ParaNorman has the edge though.
Some of the other animated properties nominated are Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1, Disney Tron: Uprising, Justice League: Doom, Robot Chicken ‘DC Comics Special', South Park ‘Raising the Bar’, and several others.

Right now, the media is flooded with superheroes, almost to the point of saturation. Comic book films have become the new summer blockbusters, networks are scrambling to find caped vigilantes that will appeal to the general adult viewing audience, and kids’ networks all have a variety of comic book-related animated series in their schedules. And with so many of the upper-tier heroes having hogged the spotlight for so long, we’re finally getting to see some of the lesser-known crime fighters get their due. One recent addition to Cartoon Network’s roster is the Dcau (DC Animated Universe) series Green Lantern, which follows the adventures of the first Silver Age member of the Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan. The series so far has focused on the Corps fighting the Red Lanterns (whose abilities are drawn from rage, as opposed to willpower like the Green Lanterns), who are led by Atrocitus,...

Jennifer Yuh Nelson's "Kung Fu Panda 2" dominated the Annie Awards nominations, but the International Animated Film Society decided to give its highest honor -- the Best Animated Feature award -- to Gore Verbinski's "Rango." Both films are from DreamWorks Animation and they still have to duke it out at the upcoming Oscars in the Best Animated Feature Film category.
Besides the Best Animated trophy, "Rango" also collected awards for Best Editing and Writing. But Nelson, the first woman to direct a feature film animation from a major Hollywood production company, won the Directing in a Feature Production award! Yay! (Check out my interview with Jennifer Yuh Nelson for "Kung Fu Panda 2" right here)

I'm a huge fan of animation, animated films are getting better and better. Not only is the look and animation getting ridiculously awesome, but I find that many of these animated films actually have incredibly good stories. Not all of them are good though, for example, Cars 2 and Rio sucked. It will be interesting to see who ends up taking home the awards this year. Out of the movies on the list that I've seen and liked we have Puss in Boots, Rango and Kung Fu Panda 2. I guess it's no surprises that Kung Fu Panda 2 is leading the nominations with 9. Check out the list and let us know what your favorite animated movies of the year are!

The fact that Mirrors 2-starring Carrie and House's William Katt alongside Nick Stahl and Emmanuelle Vaugier and-is being released straight to DVD shouldn't surprise anyone, given the current industry standard of remake, repeat, redo. What does surprise here a little is Frederik Wiedmann's score; a composition which--though not groundbreaking or defining--certainly does the composer more of a service than the crew of Mirrors 2.Of course, Mirrors 2 isn't the first movie to be outshined by its score-see the Ennio Morricone soundtrack to 1985's sword and sorcery disaster,...
