The Script2Comic Contest is going international. The competition that turns screenplays into comic books has a new sponsor: the Japanese publisher Kodansha, which is behind titles such as Attack on Titan, Akira and Ghost and the Shell.
It’s a noteworthy move for Script2Comic, as its winners now could have their work being turned into a Manga that Kodansha could develop into an animated series, in addition to being published as comics in the United States by boutique publisher Amp Comics.
“This partnership embodies our enduring commitment to discovering new talents in the world of manga and graphic novels. We believe that this contest offers a unique platform for storytellers to bring their visions to life and potentially reach a global audience,” said Yohei Takami, director of the rights media business division of Kodansha.

Adam Beach must leave his family in a desperate attempt to protect them in an exclusive first look at “Exile,” which you can watch above.
The trailer lays out the high concept. Ted Evans is being menaced by a man connected to a prior sin. He previously was in a fatal auto accident while driving under the influence. The man whose family he killed is about to be released from prison. The deal: “You leave your family, or I kill your family.” However, his wife isn’t so willing to give up on him. Of course, that’s because she thinks that the threat is not tangible but rather a manifestation of his guilt.
Written by Michael Beaton and directed by Jason James, “Exile” will be distributed by Electric Entertainment and released Oct. 10 on VOD. Amber Ripley and Sammie Astaneh are producers. Ellie Fox, Mark Williams, Tai Duncan and Jhod Cardinal...

Actor Liam Neeson showed up last night at AMC Lincoln Square on the Upper West Side to thank audiences for coming out on the reopening day of the city’s theaters.
Neeson was particularly thankful that audiences could see his new film The Marksman on a big screen. To date, it’s grossed $12.5 million in the US and Canada, with a worldwide total of $16.5 million. New York City is the nation’s second-largest market, trailing only Los Angeles.
“Coming to a movie theater for me is like coming home,” Neeson said at the 7Pm showing of his film. “I find it sacred. That feeling has never changed.”

ReFrame, the coalition formed by Women in Film, the Sundance Institute and IMDbPro, has designated a total of 20 films among 2018’s 100 highest-grossing titles to receive the ReFrame Stamp, which recognize standout, gender-balanced films.
The list released Wednesday includes Fox Searchlight’s Oscar Best Picture-nominated The Favourite, Paramount’s Transformers pic Bumblebee, Disney’s A Wrinkle In Time, Stx’s I Feel Pretty and Lionsgate’s The Spy Who Dumped Me. Nine additional films outside the top 100 were awarded stamps after applying (see the full lists below).
The stamp, launched last June, awarded 12 film stamps in 2017. But the group’s 2018 study found continued disparities in female representation and women of color, with just 4% of the top 100 films directed by a female (down from 6% a year ago), and 23% written by a female. A total of 37% featured female leads, with only 9% being women of color.

The ReFrame coalition of industry leaders and IMDBPro have unveiled 20 movies certified as gender-balanced productions among the top 100 box office films released in 2018.

ReFrame, founded by Women in Film and the Sundance Institute, launched the data initiative last June in an effort to recognize and promote gender-balanced films and television shows. It said Wednesday that the increase in recipients of the ReFrame Stamp from 12 in 2017 to 20 stemmed from gains in the roles of department heads and women-of-color leads and co-leads. Still, the report noted that there remained shortfalls in several key areas.

In today’s film news roundup, Molly Shannon’s “Wild Nights with Emily” and Motke Dapp’s “Other Versions of You” get distribution, Robert Patrick is up for a role as an FBI agent and “Nutcracker” writer Ashleigh Powell signs with CAA.

Greenwich Entertainment has bought “Wild Nights with Emily,’ a dramatic comedy about Emily Dickinson starring Molly Shannon.
The film, which had its world premiere at the SXSW Film Festival, was written and directed by Madeleine Olnek. Greenwich will release the film theatrically early next year.
Shannon’s role captures the vivacious, irreverent side of the poet that was covered up for years — most notably Emily’s lifelong romantic relationship with another woman, using Dickinson’s own words.

Career bank robber Tom Carter (Neeson) meets the love his life in Annie (Walsh), who works at the front desk of a storage facility where he hid $7 million in stolen loot. They fall head over heels, and he resolves to wipe the slate clean by turning himself in. When the case is turned over to a crooked FBI agent, everything becomes far more dangerous and difficult.
I’m told Jai Courtney is in talks to play the crooked agent and that Jeffrey Donovan and Jeffrey Wright also are in the mix for roles. Tai Duncan, Myles Nestel, Mark Williams and Craig Chapman are producing.
