Narrator of key moments in cycling since the mid-70s, Liggett’s story includes his controversial support of Lance Armstrong
Here is a documentary of pretty niche interest, it has to be said: the life and times of Tour de France commentator Phil Liggett, who was a ubiquitous fixture on TV coverage of the event in English-speaking countries for years. Well, Liggett appears to be an interesting character, if John Craven looked a bit like Terence Stamp and held forth with a touch of Alan Partridge, but with a runtime of a shade under two hours, this is pushing it a bit.
Born on the Wirral, and currently residing with his wife Trish in a game reserve in South Africa where he helps with efforts to protect rhinos from poachers, Liggett is one of those old-school sports broadcasters – like John Motson or Clive Everton – whose natural communication skills and unswerving...

‘High Ground’.
Adelaide Film Festival announced its first five titles today, as it pushes forward with a physical event in October as originally planned.
Among the early local fare is Stephen Johnson’s 1930s drama High Ground, which premiered earlier this year in Berlin, and documentaries Firestarter – The Story of Bangarra, from Nel Minchin and Wayne Blair, and Phil Liggett: The Voice of Cycling, from Nickolas Bird and Eleanor Sharpe.
The biennial festival has also snared the Australian premiere of Thomas Vinterberg’s comedy Another Round, direct from Toronto. Starring Mads Mikkelsen, the film was selected to screen in Cannes and follows four friends, all high school teachers, who test a theory that they will improve their lives by maintaining a constant level of alcohol in their blood.
Also on the line-up is Benjamin Lee’s The Painter and the Thief, this year’s winner of the Sundance Film Festival...

“If you believe in miracles, if you believe in fairytales, then you believe in Lance Armstrong.”- Phil Liggett
The sport of professional cycling has always been, for all intents and purposes, a “European” sport. Races with names like the Vuelta Espana, Giro d’Italia, Tour de Suisse, and the grand poobah of them all, Le Tour de France, have been around for 100 years.
In Europe. Watched by Europeans.
But that all changed in 1993 when a young American from Plano, Texas named Lance Armstrong won a stage in the Tour de France. Armstrong wasn’t the first American to have success in European cycling. Greg LeMond blazed the path before him, being the first American to win the prestigious race in 1986, going on to win it two more times in 1989 and 1990. But LeMond didn’t spark the same excitement and influx of American fans to the sport the way that Armstrong did.

OLN got off to a yellow-jersey start with its live coverage of the 2005 Tour de France this weekend, posting its highest numbers ever with an average .48 household rating. With viewership up a full 80% from 2004, the network averaged a total audience of 418,735 for Saturday and Sunday. For the sake of comparison, last year the Comcast-owned OLN drew around 99,000 viewers in the course of an average non-Tour weekend. This year marks the fifth year of Tour coverage for OLN, although Nielsen did not begin tracking OLN's ratings until 2002. Besides tuning in to track the progress of retiring American cyclist Lance Armstrong, who's gunning for his seventh consecutive Tour victory, viewers have been won over by the plummy tones and erudite observations of commentators Phil Liggett and Paul Sherwen. The Tour wraps up July 21.
