Can Alex Rodriguez do for ESPN’s baseball presentations what Peyton and Eli Manning have done for its “Monday Night Football”? The Disney-backed sports-media giant is going to find out.
ESPN on Friday outlined a new strategy for its flagship “Sunday Night Baseball,” setting up Rodriguez and veteran sports commentator Michael Kay in a special flanker presentation of eight games on ESPN2 while enlisting David Cone in a new multi-year deal alongside Karl Ravech and Eduardo Perez for the original “Snb.” The plan appears to emulate what ESPN has done in the fall, broadcasting its regular “Monday Night Football” on its primary cable network while setting up the Manning brothers and guests ranging from NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell to David Letterman in a freewheeling bull session that plays off game action.

That would be “Star Wars Day” for the non-fans
Nobody does synergy better (or at least more) than Disney. On May 4, ESPN will air a special “Star Wars”-themed MLB broadcast of a game between the New York Yankees and Houston Astros.
For the MLB fans who are not also fans of a galaxy far, far away, that date is known as “Star Wars Day” because of the wordplay of “May the Fourth” that sounds very similar to “May the force be with you,” a well-known phrase in “Star Wars” lore.
For the broadcast, ESPN will have its on-air commentators dressed in full costumes: Karl Ravech (play-by-play) as Luke Skywalker, Tim Kurkjian (analyst) as Yoda and Eduardo Perez (analyst) as Poe Dameron. Ravech and Kurkjian will be in ESPN’s Bristol, Conn., studios, while Perez will be at his home in Miami.
