The Best Limited Series/TV Movie Writing category has 111 submissions on the 2023 Emmys ballot, giving us six nominees this year. With the same number of nominees last year, they were “Dopesick” (“The People vs. Purdue Pharma” by Danny Strong), “The Dropout” (“I’m in a Hurry” by Elizabeth Meriwether), “Maid” (“Snaps” by Molly Smith Metzler), “Station Eleven” (“Unbroken Circle” by Patrick Somerville), “Impeachment: American Crime Story” (“Man Handled” by Sarah Burgess), and the winner “The White Lotus” (Mike White).
What makes last year interesting is that half of the shows in the category were not nominated for Best Limited Series, something that perhaps could repeat itself to a degree with this year’s potential nominees. Another thing of note is that almost all of the top contenders this year that had the option to submit multiple episodes only went with one, preventing any possibility of vote-splitting.

After exploring the Oj Simpson trial and Gianni Versace's murder, Ryan Murphy's next season of American Crime Story will focus on the political sex scandal between President Bill Clinton and White House intern Monica Lewinsky. The infamous story has been in the works for a couple of years and will be produced by Lewinsky herself, a fact Murphy made clear back in 2018.
"I told her, 'Nobody should tell your story but you, and it's kind of gross if they do,'" he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. "'If you want to produce it with me, I would love that; but you should be the producer and you should make all the goddamn money.'"
Lewinsky will be played by Booksmart star Beanie Feldstein, with longtime Murphy actress Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp. Annaleigh Ashford, who made her Acs debut in season two, will play Paula Jones. These...

FX president John Landgraf defended the decision to air “Impeachment: American Crime Story,” dedicated to the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky impeachment drama, just months ahead of the 2020 election, In addition, he called the current media environment “toxic.”
Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour on Tuesday, Landgraf shot down a tweeted comment that the decision to “to turn the homestretch of 2020 into a revisitation of the Clintons” might affect the outcome of the presidential race.
“Let me just say something about the current environment,” Landgraf said. “This certainty that says we can’t have conversations, we can’t make art, we can’t have nuance, that I won’t even wait to pronounce judgement, is toxic in the media environment. I believe very, very strongly in what we’re making. I’ve read it, I think it’s great.”

FX chief John Landgraf is fully aware that the upcoming Impeachment: American Crime Story is landing right in the final stretch of the 2020 election – and he’s totally Ok with that.
“People are going to be very interested in this around the presidential election and it is going to be a great show,” the increasing defensive Disney employee said today at the TCA as a rising tide of criticism emerged online to the series executive produced by Ryan Murphy and Nina Jacobson and set for September 2020.

FX chairman John Landgraf faced questions about the timing of the third season of “American Crime Story” which is slated to premiere in September, 2020 in the middle of the Presidential election cycle, and whether the series would impact on the election.

Sarah Paulson will star as Tripp, Beanie Feldstein will play Lewinsky and Annaleigh Ashford will portray Jones. It seems Ryan Murphy has changed his mind about taking on the Monica Lewinsky-Bill Clinton scandal, as it will be the focus of the next season of “American Crime Story” — which will star Sarah Paulson, Beanie Feldstein and Annaleigh Ashford, and is produced by Lewinsky herself — FX Networks and FX Productions chairman John Landgraf said during the Television Critics Association press tour Tuesday.

Mrs. Smith goes to Washington in Sarah Burgess’ new play, “Kings,” which opened Tuesday at the Public Theater. Rep. Sydney Millsap (Elsa Davis, “House of Cards”) is as high-minded as James Stewart’s senator but much tougher. The joke of Frank Capra’s 1939 classic movie is that, while Stewart’s character meant well, he’s essentially incompetent, and that the government’s in better hands with the corrupt politicians, who are, at least, smart. Millsap is definitely smart and competent, and in the first few scenes of “Kings” she’s also rather unsympathetic in her blithe dismissal of the people around her. Those people, however,...

Ars Nova, the New York City–based theater development program, is currently accepting applications for their emerging writers collective, Play Group. Play members meet twice a month to share work, receive feedback, and build a sense of community, as well as fully “develop their plays with peer support and become inspired by each other’s work.” All up-and-coming playwrights willing to enter a collaborative environment are eligible for a two-year membership that begins in January of 2015. Alumni of Play Group include Annie Baker, Joshua Allen, and Sarah Burgess. To apply, visit www.arsnovanyc.com for the online application, which requires one full-length play, a playwriting résumé, two professional references, and a personal statement. Applications will only be accepted via the Ars Nova website. Applications are due by Aug. 3.
