Learned boxing while serving a 26-year sentence for armed robbery at
Menard Correctional Center (Chester, Illinois). Released after seven
years, he won the amateur heavyweight world title in 1999 in a walkover
when Felix Savon refused to fight him in
protest of a decision against a teammate. Named captain of the 2000
U.S. Olympic Boxing Team, he lost to Savon in the second round. Bennett
retired from boxing in 2003 after a 10-4 record as a pro.
