Maurice Finnell, who taught musicianship and sight-singing in New York City for 52 years, died Jan. 5. He was 93 years old.A bass, Finnell sang in the early 1940s for opera companies and radio stations throughout the tristate area. He served in World War II and then continued his vocal studies on the GI Bill at the American Theatre Wing. He accepted a teaching position there in 1947 and went on to teach more than 9,000 students over the course of his life, as recently as this past December. Notable former students include Tony Bennett, Bette Midler, Paul Sorvino, and Tyne Daly.Finnell was divorced from his wife, the late Paula Spitzer Finnell, and is survived by his daughter, Jan Finnell, of New York City; his son, Ian, and Ian's wife, Janice, of Montclair, N.J.; and two grandsons.A memorial service celebrating his life will be held in New York City later this winter.
