The series stars Hoa Xuande, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, Alan Trong, Emmy winner Sandra Oh, and Academy Award nominee Robert Downey Jr., who plays multiple roles.

Robert Downey Jr. may newly be wearing the title of Oscar winner, but the “Oppenheimer” star is shedding all semblance of self for Park Chan-wook’s “The Sympathizer.”

Oscar frontrunner Robert Downey Jr. stars alongside newcomer Hoa Xuande as well as Emmy nominee Sandra Oh, Fred Nguyen Khan, Toan Le, Phanxine, Vy Le, Ky Duyen, Kieu Chinh, Duy Nguyen, and Alan Trong – and then also Downey, Downey, and Downey again – in the new series “The Sympathizer.” The limited event from acclaimed director Park Chan-wook (“Oldboy”) and Don McKellar debuts on HBO beginning April 14.
About the Downey of it all: The “Oppenheimer” star, who is widely expected to win his first Oscar for the film during the Academy Awards on March 10, plays four roles in “The Sympathizer,” with each distinct character representing a form of American imperialism.

You like one Robert Downey, Jr., yes, but what about several of them? That seems to have been the pitch behind "The Sympathizer," HBO Max's -- sorry, make that Max now, per Warner Bros. Discovery's new rebranding effort -- new limited series from acclaimed South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook. The explosive story is based on author Viet Thanh Nguyen's Pulitzer Prize-winning book of the same name and is led by "Cowboy Bepop" star Hoa Xuande as a North Vietnamese spy hiding in plain sight in the United States. Set during the waning days of the Vietnam War, the politically charged thriller promises to retain all the potency of the original novel. Oh, and Downey, Jr. shows up to portray several different characters in wildly different getups, representing various elements of U.S. bureaucracy.

Fear The Walking Dead isn't a universe that allows happy endings. Sure, you might get a few happy moments here and there, and between seasons anything is possible, but on a macro level, nothing's going to work out for anyone, and everyone's going to die miserably. After all, these are a bunch of people who are trying to scratch out a living in an inhospitable desert, an arduous process even before the whole zombie apocalypse outbreak. However, La Serpiente ends on a strangely pleasant note. Daniel and Strand have a handshake and an understanding of mutual benefit. Madison's gotten the water needed to keep the peace and keep the ranch alive.

“Over the mountain and away from this place, I’ll get us there”
“Bear Man”, Hell on Wheels’ sixth episode, set the show back on the right track after it had strayed into slow and uncertain territory. The episode was smart, featured an exceptional performance by Common, and was true to the show’s brutal but contemplative nature. We now know that Elam (Common) survived the bear attack last season, at least physically. It’s clear that he is unstable and dangerous. Hell on Wheels, Episode 5, Season 4, “Life’s a Mystery”
Written by Mark Richard and Thomas Brady
Directed by David Straiton
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“Wouldn’t be wise to kick a man while he’s down- he’s liable to kick back”
Last week’s episode of Hell on Wheels, “Reckoning”, was a slow and disappointing entry. There were great moments but given how exceptional the first three episodes of the season were, “Reckoning” left much to be desired. “Life’s a Mystery” is better but it’s also very heavy-handed and uneven.
This episode has an unusual structure with a campy and rather unnecessary opening set in Juarez, Mexico. While stylish, the whole thing feels out of place. Grit and realism have always been what’s made Hell on Wheels special, so this hyper and bloody opening, complete with slow motion, doesn’t feel like Hell on Wheels.

Hell on Wheels, Season 4, Episode 2, “Escape from the Garden”
Written by Mark Richard

Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“Blood will be spilled, that’s for sure”
Besides Elam’s (Common) survival, how exactly Cullen (Anson Mount) will escape The Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) is season four’s biggest question. It’s what fans have wondered about since the end of last season, when the gates of that Mormon compound closed and Cullen was forced to marry Naomi (MacKenzie Porter). Now that he is a father and husband, escaping The Swede has become his top priority. Viewers have been expecting a lot, but few likely predicted what this episode delivers. But more on this later.
Hell on Wheels hit a series high last season and its fourth season premiere last week made it seem like it was going to continue that streak. Thankfully, “Escape from the Garden” doesn’t disappoint.

“Some people don’t want to be pulled out of the mud, Mr. Durant”
There’s a very strong argument to be made that along with Hannibal, AMC’s Hell on Wheels is one of the most underrated dramas on television right now. Over the course of three seasons, the show has moved from a historical drama to a deeply moving and fascinating character study that just happens to be set during the building of one of America’s greatest accomplishments, the building of the Union Pacific Railroad. Its muddy and vicious camp is inhabited by rich and thrilling characters, the storylines continue to capture the viewer’s attention, and our lead, a man often struggling with a dark world and the darkness within himself, is an endlessly fascinating and evolving character.

Hell on Wheels returns Aug. 2, and the AMC Western—which parlayed Saturday night success into an expanded 13-episode fourth season—will have more than one new face. One that might surprise fans is that of Cullen’s young Mormon bride, Naomi. Originally played by Siobhan Williams, the character was introduced early last season when the railroad carved its way through her family’s Nebraska homestead. Cullen (Anson Mount) had sex with her once in the barn, but then had to hang her brother after her trigger-happy father blamed his son for killing of a member of the railroad police. In the season 3 finale,...

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 10, “Get Behind the Mule”
Written by Mark Richard and Jami O’Brien
Directed by Neil Labute
Aired Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
The third season of AMC’s Hell on Wheels has been its best yet- powerful, quick witted, thrilling, and consistently entertaining. Director Neil Labute, who directed one of the season’s most effective episodes, “Searchers”, returns to the season finale.
We’ve seen Cullen (Anson Mount) in desperate situations before but him being held prisoner in Fort Smith basically at the mercy of the Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) is terrifying. We know as an audience all the terror and suffering that he has caused and Cullen’s stunned, “my God” is more than apt. This season has been building towards a Cullen and Swede confrontation and their first scene together is one of the best of the night.

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 8, “It Happened in Boston”
Written by Mark Richard
Directed by Rosemary Rodriguez
Airs Saturdays at 9pm (Et) on AMC
“It Happened in Boston” picks up directly where last week’s Hell on Wheels ended, with Elam (Common) returning from burning the cholera victims to find that Eva (Robin McLeavy) has given away their baby. This moment from last week is one of the episode’s biggest issues. How could a mother, even one as conflicted as Eva, just hand over her child? True, a place like the Hell on Wheels camp isn’t the best place to raise a child, but something about the decision just doesn’t ring true to the character, especially after the kidnapping left her so devastated. Elam’s reaction, falling into the bottom of a bottle and kicking Eva out, is understandable. He’ll never get Rose back, but even more painful for him,...

Hell on Wheels, Season 3, Episode 2: “Eminent Domain”
Written by John Wirth
Directed by Adam Davidson

It’s no secret- last season’s Hell on Wheels had a lot of issues, mainly the forced relationship between Cullen and Lily Bell (after all, this is not a show conducive to a dewy romance). Fortunately that arc wrapped up in the season two finale and judging by the premiere, season three promises to be one heck of a year.
As “Big Bad Wolf” opens, Cullen (Anson Mount) emerges from a massive snow storm a somewhat new man. He’s not exactly stable but as he arrives in Omaha to collect Elam (Common), who’s living with the heavily pregnant Eva (Robin McLeavy), it’s obvious he’s a man trying to change,...

We find former confederate soldier Cullen Bohannon (Anson Mount) readying to assume control of the Union Pacific Railroad, emancipated slave Elam Ferguson (Common) wondering whether wearing a badge will be too dangerous for a new family man, and railroad impresario Thomas “Doc” Durant (Colm Meaney) scheming to get out of jail and back into business. Hell on Wheels, Season 2, Episode: “The Lord’s Day”
Written by Mark Richard and Chris Mundy

Airs Sundays at 9 pm (Et) on AMC
With only two episodes left, Hell on Wheels is closing on what’s been a pretty epic season. Durant (Colm Meany) returns to the camp with his wife Hannah (Virginia Madsen) right behind him. Elam (Common) builds his house by the river while Eva (Robin McLeavy) and Mr. Toole discuss her child with Elam and Lily (Dominique McElligott), Cullen (Anson Mount), and the Durants have a wonderfully awkward dinner where Hannah makes it perfectly clear that she knows Lily’s past with her husband and isn’t happy about it at all.
“Careful who you align yourself with, Mr. Bohannon,” Hannah tells Cullen early in the episode. This late in the season it’s always a risk for a show to introduce someone new,...

Hell on Wheels, Season 2, Episode 5, “The Railroad Job”
Written by Mark Richard
Directed by Michael Nankin
Airs Sunday at 9 pm (Et) on AMC
I think it’s safe to assume that by this point Cullen (Anson Mount) has his fair share of ghosts. This week’s “The Railroad Job” opens with the ex-Confederate soldiers Cullen was running with at the beginning of the season plotting the robbery of the Hell on Wheels camp.
Lily (Dominique McElligott) contemplates her future once the railroad reaches the Pacific and Durant (Colm Meany) does little to calm her fears when he tells her that he’ll more than likely return to New York. The Swede (Christopher Heyerdahl) and Reverend Cole continue their bizarre interactions, with the Reverend literally anchored down by his alcoholism. He’s made the Swede promise to keep him tied up until he can kick his habit and finish his manifesto.

Hell on Wheels, Season 1, Ep. 8 ‘Derailed’
Written by: Tony and Joe Gayton, Mark Richard, Bruce Marshall Romans
Directed by: David Von Ancken
Airs Sunday 10 Pm Est. on AMC
Well, Hell on Wheels, I surrender. I surrender to the idea that there may not be anything salvageable about this season, and possibly this series. The storytelling, and the character development that was beginning to build in past episodes, burned into a pile of ash and soot. The spark(s) that started the blaze? Characters make sudden odd decisions and turns, of which went against what we were lead to believe in the little character development we were given to this point, and others wander aimlessly.
What immediately jumped out about this episode was the Reverend. After discovering the tragedy of the train derailment the Reverend is distraught, and has suddenly given up all hope of there being peace among the pioneers and the natives.

Written by Tony Gayton, Joe Gayton, and Mark Richard

Airs Sunday 10 pm Est. on AMC
I come to you this night feeling, for the first time, a strange stirring in my gut resembling satisfaction. Obviously this is in regards to the most recent episode of Hell on Wheels, and yes, it was good. I am not about to shed all my criticisms of the previous episodes, nor am I going to say this latest episode was flawless. But it did show, at times, a fantastic depth of character and emotion that it seemed systematically opposed to in earlier episodes.
For the first time the show seemed to slow down a bit and rather than drive home plot points with every scene or interaction between characters, it chose a route of delivering plot from within characters rather than without.

Chicago – The popular image of the newspaper reporter screaming into the phone with a hot scoop most likely began with the popular and oft-produced stageplay, “The Front Page.” Timeline Theatre of Chicago presents an essential restaging of the classic with superior attention to period detail.

This is also a true blood Chicago story, staged originally in 1928 and written by two former reporters in the Windy City, Ben Hecht and Charles MacArthur. The stink of politics, corruption of the legal system and the men who reported on these topics permeate the atmosphere of the serio-comedy, set in the days when Chicago had nine circulating newspapers, including the now defunct Daily News and the still surviving Tribune.
The story opens in the press room of the municipal courtroom building, where the denizens of the various Chicago newspapers are killing time before covering an impending execution. The accused, Earl Williams (Rob...

The most remarkable thing about Stop-Loss, director and co-writer (working with Mark Richard) Kimberly Peirce's first film since 1999's Oscar-winning Boys Don't Cry, is that it isn't anti-war. It is, in fact, very pro-soldier, looking at the fighting men and women our country sends over to the Middle East with a teary-eyed reverence that's difficult to resist. These are our sons and daughters, our brother and sisters. These are our friends. These are our neighbors. These are the people we see each day of our lives. I liked this movie back when it was released in theaters at the end of March. I love it now. These are people audiences can relate to and understand, their commitment to their country and to one another as strong and as vital as their own. The war isn't the issue here, the people are, and anyone who has been affected by this...
