Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-reigning British monarch in history and one of the world’s most recognizable — and most portrayed — figures in modern times, died Thursday. She was 96.
After 70 years of rule, Elizabeth died peacefully at Balmoral Castle in Scotland, where she had spent the summer, the Royal Family announced.
She will be succeeded by her firstborn son, Charles. “The death of my beloved Mother, Her Majesty the Queen, is a moment of the greatest sadness for me and all members of my family,” the new king said in a statement.

Lifetime has filled its title roles for Harry & Meghan: Escaping the Palace. Jordan Dean (The Punisher) and Sydney Morton (She’s Gotta Have It) will star as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex in the third installment of the Harry & Megan film franchise. Escaping the Palace began production this week in Vancouver for a fall 2021 debut. Dean and Morton will fill the royal shoes vacated by Parisa Fitz-Henry and Murray Fraser in 2018’s Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance, followed by Tiffany Smith and Charlie Field for the second installment Harry & Meghan: Becoming Royal in 2019.

Admittedly, information on historical figures can’t necessarily be spoiled in the traditional sense when it comes to movies and TV. But in the case of the Lifetime movie “Harry & Meghan: A Royal Romance,” its portrayal of the royal couple hews so closely to reality that some scenes that take storytelling license may be mistaken for fact.
This is the case later in the movie when actress and women’s rights activist Meghan Markle (Parisa Fitz-Henley) finally gets invited by her fiancé Prince Harry (Murray Fraser) to meet his gran, aka Queen Elizabeth II (Maggie Sullivun). After drinking tea and petting corgis, the Queen takes them to look at a portrait of Queen Charlotte.
As they gaze upon it, the Queen says, “I’ve always loved this portrait of our ancestor Queen Charlotte because the painter...
