We are in Toronto 1989. Meet floppy haired, bearded Josh Harnett as Victor Malarek – an investigative reporter who isn’t afraid of following any story he thinks worthy and the type of man who would swerve a car out of the way of a cat – at face value a nice chap. After missing the birth of his daughter due to a lead, he becomes obsessed in exposing a heroin bust coordinated by bend coppers to frame an innocent man and ultimately leaving him to rot in a Thai prison. The man oozes confidence, knows what he wants and we quickly get a sense that he will expose this story no matter what it takes.
Daniel Roby, known for TV series Versailles takes on this inspired by real events narrative. Much like the pace of Versailles, Target Number One is dialogue heavy with lingering scenes which, in the main, keep you engaged.

Canada Dry: Roby Runs Circles in Derivative Poliziotteschi
Most Wanted, the fifth feature from French Canadian director Daniel Roby may be indeed be ‘inspired’ by true events, but is presented in such a way which more rightly justifies the expression of being inspired by other films.
A derivative mishmash of elements which attempts to streamline a tenacious investigative journalist’s efforts to unearth federal corruption and conspiracy which found an innocent Canadian citizen jailed in a Thai prison for eight years thanks to botched, illegally orchestrated operation in the war on drugs, Roby’s screenplay prizes excessive melodrama in a narrative with a misplaced focus.…...

There’s a frustrating element to watching a film that is only partly effective. Certain elements draw you in, while others push you away. Sometimes that can be a content issue, but in the case of Most Wanted, it’s more just in how the story is being told. The dramatic elements, the crime elements, the thriller elements, they’re all there. They just never get the full attention that they deserve. In telling a split narrative, filmmaker Daniel Roby doesn’t give any element enough focus, presenting them as pieces, which prevents them from landing with their intended impact. Undoubtedly, the intentions here were good, but that alone does not a good bit of cinema make, sadly. The movie is a crime drama/thriller, based on a true story. Told in fragments, we follow three plot strands that eventually come together. For ex heroin junkie Daniel Léger (Antoine Olivier Pilon), staying clean is hard,...

Trust is earned, not given. Just because you believe you’re a just person who’d do everything in your power to protect the less fortunate doesn’t mean they should blindly provide their allegiance. They need to know for sure that what you say and do is true. They need to know that you aren’t acting one way via deception in order to act another way later out of some warped notion of entitlement. There are too many people in this world who believe that the bare minimum is worth both material spoils and sainthood to want for nothing in this life and the next.

The hard-headed reporter who doesn’t play by the rules is a stock character of films that invariably do. So it proves, again, in “Most Wanted,” a fact-based Canadian procedural of police skulduggery and journalistic derring-do that does its own job with proficient integrity, but as much inventiveness as you’d guess from that all-purpose placeholder of a title. Writer-director Daniel Roby has fictionalized the grim story of Alain Olivier, a small-time drug dealer tricked in 1989 by Canuck police into traveling to Thailand to orchestrate a major heroin score, landing him several years in a local prison. Victor Malarek, the real-life journo who uncovered the agents’ corruption, retains his identity in Roby’s telling, though as played with furrowed brow and gruff virtue by Josh Hartnett, he’s a movie hero through and through.

It feels like a good time to release a film that depicts a deeply corrupt, miscalculated miscarriage of justice perpetrated by law enforcement officials. Most Wanted, written and directed by Daniel Roby, tells the real-life (though fictionalized for dramatic purposes) story of Alain Olivier and his tragic stint in Bang Kwang prison after being arrested for selling drugs. You see, young Alain was a victim of entrapment by the Rcmp (Royal Canadian Mounted Police).
Roby renames his Olivier character Daniel Leger, played with heavy pathos by Antoine Olivier Pilon. Set in British Columbia, Daniel is a young man with a drug addiction and no money, who soon gets roped into a low-level criminal enterprise led by Picker. Some time later, investigative journalist Victor Malarek (Josh Hartnett) sniffs out something rotten in the Leger story the Rcmp are selling. Ambitious to a fault, Malarek barely convinces his editor (J.C. MacKenzie) to pursue the lead.

After a stratospheric rise to stardom in the late ‘90s and early 2000s, Josh Hartnett settled down. Since then, much has been made of his escape from Hollywood and the roles he was allegedly offered and turned down. Much less has been made of the good work he did in smaller fare around that same time. Films like Paul McGuigan’s Wicker Park, Rod Lurie’s Resurrecting The Champ, and Austin Chick’s August come to mind––all underrated pictures that deserve a larger audience.
Over a decade later, Hartnett, now 42 years old, is more versatile than ever before. Following an impressive three-season run on the Showtime series Penny Dreadful and a slew of smaller films of wide-ranging genres, he now plays real-life journalist Victor Malarek in Daniel Roby’s Most Wanted. A Canadian gets involved in a drug deal gone wrong in Thailand and ends up in prison. That sounds like something we've all heard before. And the first trailer for Most Wanted plays rights into expectations, especially with its emphasis on the Canadian side of things. Thus, it raises questions in my mind about the film's intentions and its portrayal of an Asian country enforcing its laws against the plague of illegal drugs. A closer look, however, suggests something more is afoot. Written and directed by Daniel Roby, Most Wanted is inspired by a true story, so that counts for something. According to the official synopsis: "An investigative journalist (Josh Hartnett) unravels a twisted case of entrapment wherein a guy from the wrong side of...

Paramount has unveiled an official trailer for an indie dramatic thriller titled Most Wanted, formerly known as Target Number One before this new title change. In 2001, at 22, Josh Hartnett was supposed to become the next Leonardo DiCaprio or Matt Damon. His back-to-back roles in Michael Bay’s “Pearl Harbor” and Ridley Scott’s “Black Hawk Down” catapulted him onto the A-list. He graced magazine covers, the paparazzi stalked his personal life and directors pursued him for blockbusters and comic-book vehicles. But it was too much.
Instead of studio projects, Hartnett spent the rest of his 20s veering toward independent movies — such as “Wicker Park,” “Lucky Number Slevin” and “The Black Dahlia.” He turned down the role of Superman in Bryan Singer’s 2006 reboot (which starred Brandon Routh instead) and he was on Christopher Nolan’s short list to play Batman (before Christian Bale).

Exclusive: Gravitas Ventures has acquired U.S. rights to Just a Breath Away (Dans la brume), the French-language apocalyptic thriller directed by Daniel Roby and starring Romain Duris and Olga Kurylenko.
The deal was struck just ahead of its North American debut later tonight as the opening film of the Fantasia Film Festival in Montreal, and a 2019 theatrical release is in the works.
Duris and Kurylenko play parents who are desperately trying to save their daughter from a deadly toxic mist that has engulfed Paris after an earthquake. Only those lucky enough to escape to the rooftops of the city were able to survive; their daughter, who suffers from a genetic condition requiring her to live in a hermetic box that filters the air, is trapped below.

Besides managing Lady Gaga in Bradley Cooper’s “A Star Is Born” remake (out October 5), this year Sam Elliott will star in another movie that sounds original in every way. “The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then he Bigfoot” will have its world premiere this July at the Fantasia International Film Festival. Writer-director Robert Kryzkowski’s first feature — executive produced by twice-Oscar-nominated screenwriter John Sayles — casts Elliott as a WWII veteran who American and Canadian cops send to slay a plague-riddled beast.

Offering an extremely literal translation of the term “high-concept,” Daniel Roby’s apocalyptic thriller Just a Breath Away (Dans la brume) heads to the rooftops of Paris, following a family of three escaping a deadly gas cloud that’s overcome the city below.
Well-directed and marked by a few strong set pieces, the film nonetheless lacks compelling characters and complex situations, with a textbook approach to the genre that feels more like a low-key Hollywood copy than something specifically French. Released at home in early April, the €9.5 million ($12 million) production has performed modestly thus far and could see some theatrical...

In a year that saw François Delisle’s Le météore (Sundance and Berlin Film Festival accepted film) receive no love (zero nominations), and Denis Côté’s critically well-received Vic + Flo Saw a Bear was perhaps too askew for the voting clique (it did grab best Actress for Quebec’s “Melissa Leo” in Pierrette Robitaille), it was a bigger than life biopic by helmer Daniel Roby that flexed its muscles, beating out the comp. The high gloss Louis Cyr won in several tech categories and it’s strongman Antoine Bertrand won for Best Actor. Considered the favorite to win the top prize, Gabrielle was awarded the Best Director and Screenplay awards for Louise Archambault. Oddly, that film received no Best Actress consideration while it did net Gabrielle Marion-Rivard a Best Actress win at Canadian Screen Awards. Here are the noms and winners of the 16th edition.

Louis Cyr: L’homme le plus fort du monde (English title: Louis Cyr)
Written by Sylvain Guy
Directed by Daniel Roby
Canada, 2013
People become legends in the annals of history for all sorts of reasons. They might have been great inventors, intellectuals, soldiers, artists, political leaders, activists or, arguably the sort of people who earn the admiration of the masses the most easily, athletes. Their impressive feats of physicality produce admiration, inspiration and courage, but do do their journeys, the stories of where they came from, especially when they hail from small, lesser known communities. Such was the case of champion weight lifter Louis Cyr from Saint-Cyprien-de-Napierville, Québec, who was promoted as the strongest man in the world in the first decade of the 20th century. Director Daniel Roby and screenwriter Sylvain Guy have now translated the famous strongman’s story to the silver screen.

Trailers are an under-appreciated art form insofar that many times they’re seen as vehicles for showing footage, explaining films away, or showing their hand about what moviegoers can expect. Foreign, domestic, independent, big budget: I celebrate all levels of trailers and hopefully this column will satisfactorily give you a baseline of what beta wave I’m operating on, because what better way to hone your skills as a thoughtful moviegoer than by deconstructing these little pieces of advertising? Some of the best authors will tell you that writing a short story is a lot harder than writing a long one, that you have to weigh every sentence. What better medium to see how this theory plays itself out beyond that than with movie trailers? También la lluvia (Even The Rain) Trailer Director, and native Spaniard, Icíar Bollaín certainly has picked someone unique to talk about the Bolivian Cochabamba water...
