Exclusive: It’s a tough time to be a mid-sized unscripted production company right now.
A slow-down of greenlights amid cost cutting within all of the major media conglomerates, and seemingly no bump from the writers and actors strike despite what many were expecting, has led to doom and gloom across the non-scripted sector.
This has led to many companies having to undergo layoffs. Deadline understands that companies including Bunim/Murray, Half-Yard Productions and Propagate Content have all cut staff recently and more are expected to follow suit. ITV America-backed High Noon Entertainment informed its local production staff in Denver that due to production cycles, the number of workers contracted when shows weren’t in production would be reduced. We hear Hot Snakes Media is in a similar situation.
“It’s the toughest time to be in unscripted that I can remember,” one unscripted producer told Deadline.

Netflix has released the trailer for the Hillary Clinton and Chelsea Clinton-produced documentary “In Her Hands,” a feature about Afghanistan’s youngest mayor and her struggle to survive under Taliban rule after Western forces withdrew from the region.
The film chronicles Zarifa Ghafari’s journey from becoming Maidan Shahr’s first and only female mayor at age 26 to the devastation her nation faced when the Taliban reclaimed power.
For two years, directors Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen followed Ghafari as she is forced to make difficult choices to protect her people and herself. In one harrowing sequence, Ghafari receives a final warning to leave the region or else risk an assassination attempt – which she ends up narrowly surviving.
The trailer also covers Ghafari’s fight for women’s education, which she describes as “the key to a country’s development.”

“In Her Hands,” a Netflix documentary produced by Hillary and Chelsea Clinton, has unveiled its first official trailer.
The film — which won the audience award at the 18th Camden International Film Festival last month — is filmed over a two-year period, and tells the story of Zarifa Ghafari, who at 26 became one of Afghanistan’s first female mayors and the youngest to ever hold the position.
The film documents her fight for survival against the backdrop of her country’s accelerated unraveling as Western forces announce their retreat and the Taliban returns to power. Amid these tectonic changes, Zarifa must make the most difficult decision of her life.
“In Her Hands,” which is directed by Tamana Ayazi and Marcel Mettelsiefen (“Watani: My Homeland”), premiered in Toronto on Sept. 9.
The Clintons served as executive producers on the film, which marks the first non-fiction effort for their London-headquartered HiddenLight Productions. Ben Silverman’s...

Amazon Freevee has ordered the docuseries “God Family Football,” which follows ex-football player and high school football coach Denny Duron as he returns to once again coach the Louisiana-based team that he once led.
Duron has been retired for 30 years, but decides to return to Evangel Christian Academy in Shreveport, La., after the one-time high school football powerhouse fell on rough times. Once home to 14 state championships in the last 20 years, the team is now coming off its worst season in school history.
Propagate, Watershed and Ascending Media Group are behind the series, which follows Duron as he looks to teach his motto — “God first, family second, and football third” (hence the title of the series) — to a new generation.
The series will focus on the 2022 Louisiana high school football season as Evangel Christian Academy — which has sent more football players to the NFL and NCAA Division 1 college football programs...

Discovery+ has set a premiere date for its feature documentary January 6th from 9/11 filmmakers Gédéon and Jules Naudet. The pic will stream January 5, just ahead of the two-year anniversary of the attack on the U.S. Capitol.
See the new poster below.
Told from the unique perspective of the heroes, first responders and survivors of the attack, January 6th is billed as an apolitical story of resilience and bravery. It features House Speaker Nancy Pelosi; D.C. Police Chief Robert Contee III; Congresswoman Liz Cheney (R-wy) and more than 50 senators, representatives, staffers from both sides of the aisle; and police officers as they reveal their experience of the infamous day in American history. It is the only documentary for which the Capitol and Metropolitan Police Departments granted full access to their officers, Discovery+ said.

Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Oz) and Mustafa Shakir (Luke Cage) are set as leads opposite Charles Babalola in Showtime’s King Shaka drama series. Additionally, Terry Pheto (Tsotsi) and Lerato Mvelase (Justice Served) will recur in the series executive produced by Antoine Fuqua.
Rooted in actual events, King Shaka tells the story of the Zulu Empire founder Shaka (Babalola) and his unlikely rise to power, uniting multiple tribes across vast stretches of Africa in the early 19th century to transform his power into legend, on par with history’s most seminal figures. Antoine Fuqua might have been known best for his big screen blockbuster work, but in the past few years, he's made a pretty triumphant transition to streaming. Of course, it took some "adjusting" on the director's part — with the Mark Wahlberg starrer "Infinite" quietly released on Paramount+, and the Jake Gyllenhaal-led thriller "The Guilty" making a similar debut on Netflix — but Fuqua has since found a major groove with television. With producer credits on the celebrated "Mayor of Kingstown" and the recent release of Prime Video series "The Terminal List," Fuqua is enjoying the freedom that long-form entertainment affords.
"I found it to be a really positive thing," Fuqua told /Film's Jack Giroux. The freedom of the new streaming landscape reminds the filmmaker of the risk-taking on display in the '70s. "You got a chance to just come in and try some things and be brave," Fuqua added,...
