Jack Reacher won’t be working alone in season three of Reacher.
The Prime Video series — one of the biggest shows on the Amazon platform — will feature the return of Maria Sten as Frances Neagley, Reacher’s (Alan Ritchson) former military colleague, in its third season. Prime Video renewed Reacher for a third season before its season two premiere in December and is in production on the next set of episodes.
Prime Video also revealed Wednesday that season three will be based on Persuader, the seventh of author Lee Child’s Jack Reacher novels (which currently No. 28). The season will find Reacher going undercover to rescue an informant being held by someone from Reacher’s past. Neagley doesn’t appear in the book, so her presence in the series will diverge from the text.

Streaming service Starzplay has picked up the UK rights to Syfy’s comic book adaptation Deadly Class. The Lionsgate-backed digital platform will launch the series as a boxset on July 19.

Maintaining his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques and his own adolescent uncertainties soon proves to be vital. Syfy has opted not to renew Happy! for a third season and Deadly Class for a second. Both shows are based on graphic novels and both are being shopped. Happy! comes from Syfy sibling Ucp, while Deadly Class is from Sony Pictures TV, which co-produced with Ucp.
After a breakout first season for Happy!, linear ratings for the quirky comedy/drama series, starring Christopher Meloni and featuring the voice of Patton Oswalt, dropped sharply in Season 2. But the hybrid live-action/animated series reportedly has been doing well in its second window on Netflix where it is said to be the streamer’s top performing second window drama, besides You, in key male demos and teens. You also was not doing well in its first-window linear run (on Lifetime), leading to the drama becoming a Netflix original for Season 2. Happy! producer Ucp is shopping the show, and Netflix would be a natural home for it.

(This article may contain spoilers for the premiere episode of Syfy’s “Deadly Class,” which the network released online in December.)
Rick Remender is getting to do what very few comic book or novel writers get to experience: Adapting their own work for television.
Wednesday night, Syfy will debut “Deadly Class,” an adaptation of Remender and artist Wes Craig’s 2014 Image Comics graphic novel, which follows a homeless teen who’s recruited into a storied elite private school where the world’s top crime families send their next generations.
Remender, who serves as co-showrunner on the Syfy series, noted the significance of being the one to shepherd the move from the page to the screen. “The initial voice and the initial spark can often get lost in adaptations,” he told TheWrap, going as far as to say that when he was shopping it around to studios, not being heavily involved was a deal-breaker.

High school, according to TV and movies, is either the best or worst thing that can happen to a person. It’s almost always depicted as the most fun a kid can have, or a horrifying hellhole from which there’s no escape. “Deadly Class” is decidedly in the latter camp — and despite its edgy attempts otherwise, doesn’t particularly find a new way to show it.
Adapted from Rick Remender’s comic book series and produced by the Russo brothers, “Deadly Class” travels back to 1987 to tell the unlucky story of Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth), an orphan who gets recruited out of homelessness to enroll in the King’s Dominion High School for the Deadly Arts. Headed up by the exacting Master Lin (Benedict Wong), King’s is like Hogwarts, if Hogwarts was brimming over with snarling teens training to become vicious assassins. And in fact, the best directing comes...

Deadly Class delivers another appealing “secret school” drama that comics readers, aging 80s nerds, and millennials will all enjoy.
Books
This review is spoiler-free for all episodes of Deadly Class.
There will be two types of skeptics judging Deadly Class: those who have read the comic and wonder how true the series is to the source material and those who are new to the story asking, “Wait, is this just Harry Potter or The Magicians with assassins?” Fortunately, both groups of cautiously optimistic viewers will be satisfied by Syfy’s adaptation, which premieres on January 16, 2019. In some ways, the comic that inspired this troubled and violent coming-of-age tale has thoroughly invaded the television show, especially in its animated sequences from original artist Wesley Craig, and those seeking a “hidden school for special youth” derivative will find many tropes upended.

Syfy has released the entire premiere episode of Deadly Class, based on the graphic novel by Rick Remender and Wes Craig, weeks ahead of its linear debut on January 16. Now through January 16, the first episode will be available commercial-free via Syfy On Demand, online at Syfy.com, and the Syfy and USA apps. Additionally, the premiere will be available via YouTube, Facebook and Twitter through January 1. Close captioning will be available in English on all platforms and in Spanish on YouTube. The pilot was screened earlier this year for attendees at New York Comic Con at a panel moderated by Deadline’s Dominic Patten, which hosted the series’ world premiere, but it’s now available for all to see. Syfy is increasingly focusing on a multi-platform approach to releasing its new original content, such as the multi-platform rollout of Nightflyers which began earlier this month,...

David Zayas (Dexter) and Kelcey Mawema (To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before) are set to recur on Deadly Class, Syfy’s upcoming series based on the Image Comics graphic novel by Rick Remender and Wes Craig. It premieres January 16.
Zayas will play El Alma Del Diablo. Leader of the Mexican cartel, El Alma del Diablo is Chico’s father. He runs his family just like his cartel – with an iron fist.
Mawema will portray Gabrielle, who hits it off with Willie while he’s on his shift at the local comic book store. She attempts to persuade Willie that Kings Dominion isn’t right for him.
Deadly Class is described as a coming-of-age journey full of ancient mystery and teen angst. Set in a dark, heightened world against the backdrop of late ‘80s counterculture, it follows the story of Marcus (Benjamin Wadsworth), a teen living on the streets...

The Purge feels like an event in its quick-moving seventh episode.
This The Purge review contains spoilers.
The Purge Episode 7
I appreciate The Purge's commitment to old-fashioned stunt work more than perhaps anything else about the show. After all, there aren't many movies that would light a guy on fire, then send him down a zip line, let alone a television show. The only thing I appreciate more than a “guy on fire” scene is an unbroken long take tracking shot, like the stairway fight in The Protector or the incredible raid sequence in True Detective. The fire-flight isn't as long as when Alec Holland gets set on fire in Swamp Thing, but there's got to be points for degree of difficulty, plus there's no way to put the guy out when he's in the middle of the zip line, so he has to ride all the...

Exclusive: Smothered in the last years of the Reagan Era, Deadly Class made its Comic-Con debut Saturday with a new trailer for the upcoming Syfy series based on Rick Remender and Wes Craig’s comic.
“We’ve been huge fans of the book and huge fans of Rick Remender and we’ve put a lot of time and thought and energy and passion into bringing that book to the screen as authentically as possible,” executive producer Joe Russo told the crowd packed into the Indigo Ballroom at the Hilton Bayshore. He appeared in the opening minutes of the panel via video with his brother, fellow Ep and Avengers: Infinity War director Anthony Russo.
With multiple bleeps hiding a tease to the title of the next Avengers movie, the Russos’ video kicked off a panel that saw a well-received nearly 15-minute sneak peek of Deadly Class the TV show, a pledge...

“If your expectation is that we’re going to bring those characters to life and that world to life, and the Deadly Class school to life,” Joe Russo says of the upcoming Syfy series he and his fellow Avengers: Infinity War director and brother Anthony are executive producing, “then get excited because Rick Remender, the guy who wrote the book, is the lifeblood that’s behind Deadly Class the show.”
Heading into more production on the fourth Avengers movie in the next few weeks, the Russo brothers won’t onstage Saturday afternoon for Deadly Class‘ Comic-Con debut with co-showrunners/EPs Remender, Miles Orion Feldsott and Mick Betancourt, comic artist Wes Craig, and cast Benjamin Wadsworth, Lana Condor, María Gabriela De Faría, and Infinity War alum Benedict Wong. However, Joe Russo was extremely enthusiastic about the 2019-debuting TV adaptation of the Image Comics series when we spoke just before the confab kicked off.

SAG’s upcoming elections have been getting some attention, but the WGA West is having an election this summer as well. The ballots go out sometime in late July or August, and are apparently due back September 17. Current WGA West president Patric Verrone is running for one of the open board seats, but not for president (I believe there are term limits). Instead, the candidates for president are John Wells and Elias Davis. For more details, see the press release below.
