Berlin, May 29 (Ians) A UEFA committee has recommended that the away goals rule should be scrapped for European club competition.
Sources close to the discussions say the Club Competitions Committee has made the suggestion, but that UEFA's Executive Committee must make the final decision, reports Dpa.
The away goals rule was introduced in 1965. It is applied in the Champions League and the Europa League if both teams have scored the same number of goals in knockout matches after first and second legs.
According to the current rule, the team that has scored more away goals advances. If the number of away goals is equal, the game goes to extra-time.
If the rule change goes through, drawn ties are expected to go straight to extra-time, meaning many more encounters will ultimately go to penalty shoot-outs.

Soccer Aid for Unicef 2019, broadcast live and exclusively on ITV and Stv this week, has raised a record-breaking £6,774,764 so far – over £1m more than last year’s on the night total – for Unicef’s vital work keeping children around the world happy, healthy and safe to play.
This amount was raised thanks to the generous support of the UK public, ITV and Stv viewers, and the UK government who have matched all donations so far, doubling the difference made to children’s lives. This figure has smashed all previous records for money raised on the night.
The eagerly anticipated match took place in London for the first time in over a decade, packing out Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge Stadium with a whopping 39,836 in attendance. The match ended in a 2-2 draw, leading to a nail-biting penalty shoot-out for the second year in a row, with the Soccer Aid World XI...

Soccer Aid for Unicef is breaking new ground in football by including top female ex-professionals alongside their male counterparts – for the first time – in the world’s biggest and most successful charity football match.
Working in partnership with the Football Association, match organisers have agreed that two top tier female players will feature on each team for the full 90 minutes alongside a mix of male ex-football legends and celebrities.
The game at Chelsea Fc’s Stamford Bridge will be monitored by Brunel University researchers who are conducting an ongoing study for the Fa into mixed adult participation in recreational football.
Ex-England internationals Rachel Yankey OBE and Katie Chapman will be the first female players to feature for the Soccer Aid for Unicef England team co-managed by Sam Allardyce and Good Morning Britain presenter Susanna Reid.

The programme, which comes after Rooney broke the national team's goalscoring record against Switzerland yesterday, will air on Monday, October 5.
It will cover Rooney's journey from humble beginnings all the way through to his success on the pitch for England, as well as his thoughts on the future and his relationship with Coleen.
"I have been approached many times about allowing the cameras into our lives and always said no," he said. "But now seems the right time.

FIFA Ultimate Team has spiralled to insane levels since it’s introduction on FIFA 09, and has cemented itself as the game’s most popular mode.
One million gamers played a match on Fut back in 2009, but now that level has shot well above 21 million, with the number accelerating upwards all the time as EA plough more resources into the mode.
The basic formula of Fut has seen it become the 21st century answer to football cards and/or stickers. Collecting, buying and selling players is integral, but one thing that stickers and card could never do was face each other in matches. FIFA can bring your collection to life and adds a real purpose to your hoarding, even if you can’t own the physical cards to collect for years to come.
Now, Ultimate Team has a whole new way of competing, as demonstrated by Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher in the video above.

Football just wouldn’t be the same without a bit of controversy, drama and a good old bitchy comment amongst the air-headed professionals that play the game we all love, would it?
Emotions run high at the top end of the professional game and these passions have alluded to even the world’s best reach breaking point, often making for hysterical viewing for fans.
Who can forget Zidane’s punishing head-butt delivery to the chest of Marco Materazzi following a throwaway comment about the Frenchman’s sister? Or Arsene Wenger grappling with Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho on the Stamford Bridge sidelines after a typical needless, patronising comment from the Portuguese?
These moments heighten the drama of the beautiful game and without them, football would become stale. So thank the football Gods for blessing the current crop of professional footballers with skills, as they’ve treated fans to many...

Newcastle United seem to be Gary Neville and Jamie Carragher’s favourite weekly punching bag – but every single bit of criticism directed at the Magpies by the duo on Monday Night Football this week was thoroughly merited.
Neville described Newcastle as a club in “free-fall” right now following their club-record eighth-straight Premier League, while his fellow Sky Sports pundit Carragher blasted the Magpies as “shambles”.
John Carver’s side meekly surrendered 3-0 to Leicester City at the King Power Stadium – having two players dismissed for two bookings in the process – and the club then descended into a mini civil war as the interim head coach accused Mike Williamson of “deliberately” getting sent off, before club-captain Fabricio Coloccini and goalkeeper Tim Krul allegedly exchanged words on the coach after the game.

Sky Sports News understands Newcastle United captain Fabricio Coloccini will not be considered for the vacant manager’s position at St James’ Park.
The 32-year-old had been installed as favourite for the role by most bookmakers after Alan Pardew was given permission to talk to Crystal Palace yesterday. United and Palace agreed a compensation package of around £2 million for the 53-year-old’s services.
Now, Sky Sports’ Keith Downie, reporting from the club’s Benton training ground, has been informed Ashley will look elsewhere as he searches for a suitable replacement for Pardew. He said, “it is our understanding from the club that he won’t be considered as yet for the position. He’s still only 32 and he has a lot to give in his playing career.” Downie later reiterated: “It’s our understanding he won’t be considered.”

Since the Premier League’s inception in 1992, Liverpool have never been reluctant to spend money. Brendan Rodgers spent over £100m during the most recent summer transfer window, while the likes of Gerard Houllier and Rafa Benitez also broke the bank during their time in charge.
Between them and fellow Reds managers during the Premier League era Graeme Souness, Roy Evans, Roy Hodgson and Kenny Dalglish, they have signed many players for hefty fees, some of whom have been roaring successes and others who have failed spectacularly.
On the flip side, there are those players who have ended up being signed on the cheap, certainly in terms of their respective ability, before becoming Reds heroes and, in a few cases, legends.
With that in mind, here are the 11 Liverpool Premier League Signings Who Proved To Be Bargains.

Liverpool are one of the most historically significant football teams in the world: they are five-times European Champions and have no fewer than 19 league titles to their name with fans who follow the team spread across the globe.
Every player who plays at Anfield reveals how special it is; how the atmosphere overwhelms with a dogged spirit and an over-arching desire to succeed. Transfer deadline day being what it is, it’s no surprise to see Sky Sports with their spin engine in full flow, and there’s still a long time before Jim White even gets anywhere near the cameras.
They’re already toying with fans, suggesting that something strange might have been happening at Liverpool, as a familiar face had been spotted sneaking into the Liverpool training ground. With sensationalism the order of the day, the news was that Luis Suarez was making a return to the club.
And then inevitably, it turned out that Suarez was just returning to pick up some personal effects as he’s in the process of moving from Liverpool to Barcelona, and had apparently gone to Melwood “bearing gifts”…

To celebrate the return of the show, we headed out to Elstree to hang out backstage with the boys - James Corden, Jack Whitehall, Jamie Redknapp and Freddie Flintoff - while they prepared for another show.
As well as making the frankly ridiculous decision to take on one of the endgames - we're not going to go into it, we're still cringing (and a little bit in pain) - we got the guys together for a bit of a chat, and found out what they had to say about some burning questions we have...

Liverpool have a long and illustrious history, and inevitably have produced some wonderful players over the years both in terms of homegrown talents – like Steven Gerrard, Robbie Fowler, Michael Owen and Jamie Carragher – and marquee signings – Kenny Dalglish, John Barnes, Sami Hyypia and Luis Suarez. The successes of that illustrious lot were unrivalled in the red of Liverpool, but they were not the only players to sign or come through the ranks on the crest of a wave of optimism and expectations.
And sometimes, sadly, some of those players will fail.
Anfield is a wonderful place to ply your trade, but the pressure that comes with it is enormous. The fans are among the most passionate, and the most loyal around, but they also demand a certain standard. If a player is bought for big-money then they inevitably expect to see them justify their price tag on the pitch.

Any side with ambitions of winning the Premier League title needs to have a solid spine, a dependable goalkeeper first of all, the likes of Peter Schmeichel, Petr Cech or Edwin Van Der Sar. Two reliable defenders willing to put their body on the line for the team, the likes of John Terry, Jamie Carragher, Nemanja Vidic, Sol Campbell or Vincent Kompany. A striker that can put the ball in the back of the net is surely a must too, Thierry Henry, Alan Shearer, Didier Drogba, Wayne Rooney or Cristiano Ronaldo, possibly.
But for any great team, perhaps most crucial of all is to have solid central midfield base. One which can fill in and support the defence when needed, but also provide the ammunition for the likes of Henry and Shearer to finish, with an impeccably weighted through-ball or pin-point set piece delivery – they might...

Arsenal’s hopes of signing Luis Suarez this summer are on the rocks after Professional Footballers’ Association chief Gordon Taylor revealed a transfer was “practically impossible”, according to the BBC.
The 26-year-old has been the subject of two failed bids from Arsenal – the most recent of which being an offer of £1 over £40 million – and has been ordered by manager Brendan Rodgers to train on his own after trying to force a move away.
Earlier today, Liverpool owner John W Henry said the Uruguayan will not be sold this summer, at any price.
And the Gunners have suffered yet another set-back in their efforts to sign the striker, with Taylor saying:
“With the transfer window expiring, the difficulties of not only selling him to a competitor but also replacing him makes it practically impossible.”
That’s bad news for Arsene Wenger, who earlier this summer also missed out on Real Madrid’s Gonzalo Higuain,...

Liverpool are bracing themselves for another bid for Daniel Agger, with Barcelona becoming the latest club to show an interest in the centre-back, according to the Telegraph.
Reports in Spanish media suggest a bid has been lodged by Barcelona for the 28-year-old, with the Spanish champions offering £14 million.
However, Liverpool value the Denmark international closer to the £30 million mark, which was the fee they quoted Manchester City when they came calling last summer.
There is concern at Anfield that Barca will be more successful in their pursuits than City were, however, so much so that Martin Skrtel has been asked to commit his immediate future to the club.
Agger joined the Reds from Brøndby in 2006 and has made over 200 appearances for the Merseyside outfit, winning the Fa Cup, League Cup and Community Shield in that time.

Liverpool have been one of the more active Premier League teams in this summer’s transfer window with manager Brendan Rodgers wasting no time at all in strengthening the depth of his squad.
Sunderland goalkeeper Simon Mignolet, Manchester City defender Kolo Toure, Celta Vigo forward Iago Aspas and Barcelona B midfielder Luis Alberto have all joined the Anfield club in recent months.
And it is the latter of that quartet that looks the most exciting purchase, with the Spain U-21 international joining an already young and vibrant Liverpool side containing 21 stars under the age of 25.
It is these starlets that will form the bedrock of the club in years to come – with some already forming part of the starting XI on Merseyside.
Clearly, exciting times lie ahead for Liverpool as these currently unbridled players continue their development at the club and grow into hopefully world class players.

Liverpool target Mamadou Sakho has reportedly stalled on a new deal at Psg, potentially opening the door for a move to Anfield, according to the Express.
The centre-half was unable to nail down a regular place in Carlo Ancelotti’s starting XI last season and found himself frequently rotated by the recently-appointed Real Madrid coach.
The French international could be tempted by a move to Merseyside if it means more regular first team action under Brendan Rodgers, who has a number of defensive concerns with Jamie Carragher retired and the futures of Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates far from certain.
Skrtel is a target for Napoli, with ex-Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez keen to bring in new players at the Italian club ahead of his first season in charge.

Answer me this: What exactly is a football club?
“It’s a small boy clambering up stadium steps for the very first time, gripping his father’s hand, gawping at that hallowed stretch of turf beneath him and, without being able to do a thing about it, falling in love.” – Sir Bobby Robson
A wonderful line from one of football’s greatest ambassadors, how that man is sorely missed.
This sums up what makes the beautiful game truly beautiful. A club is not about the players and management; it’s about the people who support it, the core, the fans. In an era where a family trip to a top flight game can break the bank, we take a look at the crippling effect of money on football. In the Premier League, the cost of an adult ticket usually weighs in at well over £35, and if you’re a family of four with two kids,...

Martin Skrtel’s agent has ruled out his client’s chances of moving to Napoli this summer by claiming the Italians would be unable to afford him, according to Sky Sports.
Karol Csonto revealed earlier this month that he was set to hold talks with Liverpool about the future of the 28-year old centre-back, who admitted to his frustration toward the end of last season after losing his place in Brendan Rodger’s starting XI.
Rafael Benitez, who brought the Slovak international to Anfield from Zenit Saint Petersburg in 2008, is understood to be interested in landing the defender for his new club Napoli, who he joined this summer following the culmination of his “interim” stint in charge of Chelsea.
Yet Csonto has rubbished those claims by questioning if the Serie A club could even afford to pay his client’s wages.
Speaking to Tuttomercatoweb, he said:
“Martin to move away from Liverpool?...

This summer saw the retirement of a series of truly great footballing people.
Jamie Carragher, Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, David Beckham… Oh, and Sir Alex Ferguson, too, all stepped aside from the beautiful game.
And while Ryan Giggs, the most decorated player in the Premier League, signed a one-year extension at Manchester United at the beginning of March, surely it is only a matter of time before he too follows the likes of former teammates Scholes, Neville and Beckham in calling time on his illustrious 23-year playing career.
It will be a sad day when that time comes and one which, despite its inevitability, will shock football in the same way as Ferguson’s own retirement did last month.
The legendary midfielder is ingrained into the very fabric of Manchester United and like Ferguson will be sorely missed from the game when he does decide to hang up his boots,...

As a footballer, Jamie Carragher split football fans, and not quite down the middle. On one side were the Liverpool fans who revered him - on the other side were everyone else.
But as a boyhood Everton fan who became a Liverpool legend, Carra is more than capable of putting aside his emotions and being professional.
It's a good job, as this season he takes on the role of Sky Sports pundit. Digital Spy got in touch to ask him all about it.
Were you always planning on becoming a pundit after hanging up your boots?
"Not particularly. Obviously there's always two options - either the media role or the coaching and managing side of it. I got involved in punditry in the Euros last summer. I enjoyed it, it put a seed in my mind and I've come to the end of my career and it was known in...

Liverpool have “agreed a deal in principle” to sign Kolo Toure when his Manchester City contract expires on July 1st.
The Ivory Coast international (103 caps) centre-back will join the Anfield club on a free transfer.
Toure, 32, brings a wealth of experience to the Reds having won two Premier League titles in a decade of top-flight English football, once at Arsenal (2003-2004) and once at Manchester City (2011-2012). His time at both clubs saw him win a further three Fa Cups and three Community Shield trophies.
Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers has moved particularly quickly to bring in his first signing of the summer, and Toure could be seen as an ideal replacement for the retiring veteran Jamie Carragher and doubts over Martin Skrtel and Sebastian Coates’ future situation on-going. Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has signed a one-year extension to his contract, putting to bed any rumours suggesting he was leaving Old Trafford in the summer.
The 34-year-old retired from International football last week to prolong his career with the Premier League champions. Liverpool will make a move for Manchester City defender Kolo Toure on a free transfer once his contract expires in June, according to the BBC.
With Jamie Carragher now retired, Brendan Rodgers is on the lookout for two new centre backs and along with the 32-year old has also identified Schalke’s Kyriakos Papadopoulos.
Toure is currently away on City’s post-season tour of America but once he returns his move to Anfield is set to be finalised quickly.
The 32-year old joined City from Arsenal in July 2009 for £14 million and was part of the Gunner’s “Invincibles” team that went a whole season without defeat in 2003/04.
His signing though would seem to go against the club’s policy of signing young players and he would become the first ever player over the age of 24 that manager Brendan Rodgers has signed since taking over from Kenny Dalglish at Anfield.

The season is now over and the summer transfer window looms large ahead of us.
This summer is likely to be another busy one for Liverpool Football Club and the club’s manager Brendan Rodgers, which makes their transfer activity particularly interesting.
Will they finally start to sign the quality of player they need? Will they continue to build on the good signings of Daniel Sturridge and Philippe Coutinho? I’m sure many of us will look on in interest at their activity this close-season. Even Spurs, Everton, Arsenal and Chelsea fans may be interested, with Liverpool showing at times that they can already challenge the best teams in the league – although the consistent lack of inconsistency means Liverpool have never really been a real threat this season.
One thing we know for sure is that all the teams around Liverpool will improve during the summer so they must also do the same.

The final chapter to a fine career will come to a close this weekend and we will bid a sad and fond farewell to a Liverpool legend. Jamie Carragher plays his final competitive game for Liverpool this weekend after a distinguished career which has spanned 16 happy years. Fittingly, the centre back’s final game will take place at his second home – Anfield.
In the grand scheme of the Premier League, this final sentence of this final chapter has near enough no meaning to it but there are plenty of moments which have meant a great deal to the fans at L4. Cup finals. Crucial blocks. Title chases. These are just some of the things that have brought happy emotions to the hearts of Red supporters and Jamie has played his part in all of them over the last decade and a half.

Liverpool are hoping to sign Fc Twente’s Douglas on a free transfer this summer as a replacement for Jamie Carragher, according to the Daily Mail.
The 25-year old, full name Douglas Franco Teixeira, has been a long-term transfer target for Newcastle United, who failed with a £4 million bid last summer. Italian giants Inter Milan have also shown an interest, and Brendan Rodgers has decided to enter the fray having realised the Brazilian is out of contract.
The Northern Irishman reportedly has no more than £25 million to spend on new players this summer, and he is understood to want four new recruits. Liverpool are facing competition from Inter Milan to sign Barcelona defender Martin Montoya this summer, according to talkSPORT.
The Merseyside club are desperate to strengthen their squad this summer and manager Brendan Rodgers is said to be a huge admirer of the promising 22-year old Spain international.

He will have to move quickly, however, with news that Inter Milan have now entered the race likely to cause alarm at Anfield.
The Italian giants are on the look out for a right-sided player after Javier Zanetti was ruled out for a lengthy period of time having ruptured his Achilles’ tendon, and they could now rival Liverpool for the youngster’s signature.

Ajax defender Toby Alderweireld has dismissed speculation that he is interested in a move to Liverpool in the summer, but will keep his options open, according to Sky Sports.
The 24-year old was quoted in Belgian media last month as saying Liverpool “meets my criteria” but he has since claimed reports linking him with a move to Anfield are wide of the mark.
Speaking to Dutch newspaper Metro, he said:
“I have also read that Liverpool would be interested.
“I never said Liverpool would be my next club. Nothing is true about that.”
Ajax are set to lose most of their star players in the summer with Siem de Jong and Christian Eriksen both set to move on in the summer, but Alderweireld insists the Dutch Giants are still very much part of his plans when it comes to assessing his options in the summer.
“Ajax is in every way a fantastic club.

According to the Daily Express, Chelsea are closing in on a £20 million deal for Vasco Da Gama centre-back, Dede.
The current Champions League holders are expected to bid around £20 million for Dede in the hopes he will become a long-term replacement for 34-year-old John Terry.
Dede is currently under contract at Brazilian club Vasco Da Gama, but with the club suffering a cash crisis, the defender is rumoured to be leaving in the summer.
The 24-year-old has also attracted interest from Liverpool and Manchester United with Liverpool reportedly set to offer £15 million for the defender.
Dede has played 154 games for his club since joining in 2009 from Volta Redonda and his performances have captured the eyes of many.
Both Chelsea and Manchester United have their fair share of Brazilian players, something which will be key if Dede does decide to leave the club for a career in the Premier League.

Liverpool are favourites in the race to sign Swansea centre-back Ashley Williams, according to the Mirror.
Arsenal are also interested in the Welshman and chased his signature right up until the end of the January transfer window, but had their cash offer knocked back at the time.
The Gunners are understood to retain an interest and will make a fresh offer in the summer, but it is Liverpool who have emerged as favourites.
The 28-year old has been hugely impressive for the Swans this season but looks certain to leave in the summer, due to his ambition to play for a “big club” before it’s too late.
Williams, a massive Liverpool fan, idolised John Barnes when he was a kid growing up dreaming of a career in football, and the Merseysiders will be hoping that gives them the edge when it comes to him deciding his next career move.

Aston Villa welcome back Darren Bent, Nathan Baker and Karim El Ahmadi following injury lay-offs, while Fabian Delph returns from suspension.
Ciaran Clark and Brett Holman are doubts however having suffered shoulder injuries on international duty and will have their fitness assessed ahead of kick off.
Liverpool goalkeeper Pepe Reina and defender Jamie Carragher are pushing for recalls, but Joe Allen, Fabio Borini and Martin Kelly will miss the rest of the season.
Match Preview
Back to back league wins for Aston Villa have quietened the doom mongers – at least for a little while.
Once considered sure-fire relegation fodder, there are now quiet whispers of survival at Villa Park, and if Paul Lambert’s beleaguered side can replicate that famous 3-1 win at Anfield in December, they will be in with a real chance of dodging the relegation trap door.

At the end of this season, Jamie Carragher is retiring from football after playing for Liverpool for the best part of two decades. His absence will then leave Liverpool fans with a headache and a day they will fear, the day that their last stalwart will leave the Anfield stage and his role as the force driving the Reds forward will be relinquished. But who will fill the role? Who will be the club’s next midfield superstar and help to guide Liverpool to what their fans hope will be silverware.
Personally, although the likes of Jonjo Shelvey, Connor Coady and Jordan Henderson are all currently at the club, I do not believe that Liverpool have the players currently in their system to follow their legend, so there are the central midfielders who I believe could be great replacements for Steven Gerrard, the best English midfielder of his generation…

Two teams with very different aspirations produced an interesting encounter at St. Mary’s stadium on Saturday afternoon, as Southampton brushed past an unusually laborious Liverpool.
Amidst the rain and mud that typified an English spring, it was the likes of Rickie Lambert, becoming the highest scoring Englishman in the Premier League, who felt most at home as the Saints secured a vital 3 points and gave their quest for Premier League survival a vital and timely boost.
Southampton hustled, fought and harried while Liverpool stalled, struggled and died, the Dr. Jekyll that so courageously defeated Tottenham last weekend giving way to an ugly, lumbering Mr. Hyde. All hopes of top 4 should now be put back where they were at the start of the season, while even a fifth place berth now looks unlikely for Brendan Rodger’s side.
The Red’s inconsistency has indeed become such a monster that fans...

Liverpool fans could be set for a nervy summer as reports are emerging in The Sun that Barcelona are chasing Daniel Agger as a possible replacement for Carlos Puyol:
Borussia Dortmund wanted too much money for Mats Hummels, so Liverpool ace Agger and Arsenal’s Vermaelen are in the frame.
La Liga leaders Barcelona sniffed around Agger, 28, in the summer when Manchester City had a £20million bid rejected
Barca’s desire for a centre half willing to play it out from the back has attracted them to the Dane, which could spell danger for Brendan Rodgers and Liverpool fans. Liverpool’s defensive options don’t look that strong ahead of next season with Jamie Carragher retiring and Martin Skrtel not having his best season so far in Red.
The Anfield club probably need a defensive rebuild but you suspect Agger would be at the heart of this, losing him could be a disaster moving forward.
