- Former England full back who won 43 caps for his country. Jimmy played his football (soccer) for one club only making nearly 700 appearances for Blackpool Football Club between 1954 and 1970. Rated as one of the best defenders of his time he is a well liked and respected person amongst those associated with football. Now a football commentator and pundit on BBC radio.
- Upon his retirement as a player in 1971 he took charge of Bolton Wanderers who were in turmoil having seen three managers come and go in just under a season. He steadied the ship at Burnden Park bringing in experienced names such as Tony Dunne and Peter Thompson and within a year he led the Trotters to the Third Division championship. By 1974 he left Bolton to take over as manager of Leeds United and it was whilst at Elland Road he led the Whites to the 1975 European Cup Final but sadly they lost out to German club Bayern Munich by two goals to nil in Paris.
- He was awarded the OBE (Officer of the Order of the British Empire) in the 2000 Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to Football.
