American director Paxton Winters spent seven years with the community of Morro dos Prazeres, one of the many favelas that encapsulate Rio de Jainero. Anyone familiar with Brazilian cinema will know these as the home of the working class and the poor, nestled in the hills that give a gorgeous view, and yet are miles and miles away from prosperity. What this group delivers, filtered through their experiences and the director's vision, is a quiet and introspective film, one that looks not so much as the actions, but rather the consequences of actions and their lasting effects. Winner of the Golden Shell Grand Prize at San Sebastian Film Festival, Pacified follows Tati (Cassia Nascimento), a teenager whose estranged father Jaco (Bukassa Kabengele), a former gang...

“Joker” cinematographer Lawrence Sher’s bid, along with director Todd Phillips, to try something “perhaps even a bit artful” won big Saturday in Torun, Poland as he took the top prize at the EnergaCamerimage Intl. Film Festival.
The Golden Frog for cinematography, along with the audience prize, went to his work filming Joaquin Phoenix in the dark origin story of Batman’s nemesis for its “dystopian storytelling” that “challenges us and unsettles us,” the jury said.
Sher quipped that such a gritty film from “the guys who made ‘The Hangover’ is not always expected.”
The fest wrapped in its new home, the historic city where it was first launched 27 years ago, after screenings of 188 films, most judged by some of 48 jurors in 10 competition categories.

The surprise hit of this year’s edition has scooped three awards, while Proxima, The Endless Trench, Greta Fernández and Nina Hoss also shone bright on the winners’ list. The different films featuring in the winners’ list of the Official Section of the 67th San Sebastián Film Festival can be counted on a single hand. The surprise victor of this year’s edition, Brazil’s Pacified by Us director Paxton Winters, a movie that was admittedly not one of the most eagerly awaited in this section, has ended up taking home the Golden Shell and two additional prizes to boot: the Silver Shell for Best Actor for Bukassa Kabengele and the Jury Prize for Best Cinematography for Laura Merians. “These awards are very important for us and for Brazilian cinema,” declared the director as he accepted his trophy on stage, although, just as surprisingly, he neglected to mention how difficult the situation is.
The Spanish film festival opens today (Sept 20) with Roger Michell’s ‘Blackbird’.
José Luis Rebordinos, director of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, talks to Screen about the key role the Spanish event plays in both the European and Latin American industries, industry innovations for this year and the art of programming a festival at one of the busiest times of the year.
The festival opens today (September 20) with the European premiere of Roger Michell’s Blackbird and runs until September 28.
You are proud of how open the festival is to new talents. How does this work in practice?
It involves different strategies.
