He was a prominent expert on primate behavior who studied empathy, morality, and altruism in chimps and apes. He was a professor of psychobiology at Emory University and a research scientist at the school's Yerkes National Primate Research Center (now the Emory National Primate Research Center).
He attended Radboud University in Nijmegen, the University of Groningen, and Utrecht University.
