Earlier this year, the surprise announcement that Oni Press is resurrecting EC Comics delighted horror fans around the world, but that was only the begining! More series and creator announcements have been teased, and we're excited to exclusively reveal a new line of variant covers, which you can check out right now! Eisner Award-nominated and Emmy Award-winning artist Jay Stephens, the creator of Dwellings, is honoring EC Comics with a new, continuing line of "EC Homage" variants, debuting with Epitaphs From The Abyss #1 and Cruel Universe #1. We have a look at both covers below, along with my personal favorite: Epitaphs From The Abyss #2, featuring Jay Stephens homage of Haunt Of Fear #15 by Johnny Craig!

Written by Mark Waid and Alex Ross, DC Comics Kingdom Come was published in 1996 under the Elseworlds imprint. Alex Ross developed the concept from the original idea and painted the comic book in gouache, which has been appreciated by ardent comic book fans. DC Animated Universe veteran Bruce Timm also appreciates Alex Ross’ concept for the comic book.
Set in an alternate future of the DC Universe, Kingdom Come’s story takes the readers into a time when the Justice League team and the new-generation superheroes are fighting each other to determine the future of the planet. The limited series was reportedly written as an indictment against the growing trend of violent anti-hero archetypes that sprung out in the early 1990s. Bruce Timm explained in detail why the comic book couldn’t be adapted for an animated movie.

Founded by Maxwell Gaines in 1944, the Entertaining Comics brand (a.k.a. EC Comics) initially specialized in educational comics and stories aimed at children. But after Gaines died in a boating accident in ’47, his 25-year-old son William took control of the company and changed its direction, exploring the genres of horror, sci-fi, and satire while bringing us classic titles like Tales from the Crypt, The Vault of Horror, The Haunt of Fear, Weird Science, Weird Fantasy, and Mad. Sadly, EC Comics was at its peak when parents started to worry about the negative effects reading comic books could have on their children, leading to things like a Congressional hearing that blamed comic books for juvenile delinquency – a claim that was backed up by the book Seduction of the Innocent, written by psychiatrist Fredric Wertham. So by 1956, EC Comics ceased publishing all of their titles except for Mad. Those classic EC...

The impact of EC Comics cannot be understated, having inspired countless horror creators, including George A. Romero, Stephen King, and many, many more. Starting this summer, Epitaphs From The Abyss #1 and Cruel Universe #1 will kick off brand-new stories from some of today's best comic book writers, and we have all the details:

In the early 1950s, EC Comics was the bad boy of comic publishers. Its comics such as Tales From the Crypt, Weird Science and Two-Fisted Tales sold millions in mid-century America. Unfortunately, its stories — at times shocking, horrifying, and even progressive — also drew scrutiny and backlash, and the company found itself in the cross hairs of censorship and regulation at the height of the McCarthy era. The company ultimately shuttered, with the last comic hitting newsstands and drug stores in 1956.
Now, seventy years after the creation of the self-regulatory body Comics Code Authority, the infamous comics company is blasting out of the crypt and returning with a brand new line of comics.
Oni Press, the publisher perhaps best known for the breakout indie hit Scott Pilgrim, has partnered with William M. Gaines Agent, Inc., the rights holders of the EC line, to launch all-new stories with A-list comics creators beginning this summer.

Comics Author James Tynion IV, Artist Christian Ward Team for Ghost Story ‘Spectregraph’ (Exclusive)
Modern horror comics master James Tynion IV has some new scare fare for 2024, this time a series for upstart publisher Dstlry.
The creator of acclaimed and best-selling comics Something Is Killing the Children and The Nice House on the Lake is teaming with Christian Ward, the writer-artist behind the current Batman miniseries Batman: City of Madness for Spectregraph, described as a ghost story steeped in the decay of a century of capitalism.
The logline is thus: For years, the mansion has sat strangely, nestled into the coastline just a short drive north of Los Angeles. Rumors have haunted the place for years, its owner a titan of American industry, with a strange fascination in the occult and the paranormal. For decades, the richest men and women in the country have whispered to each other, trying to understand what he was building alone in that mansion for all those years. And now finally,...

Fan favorite comics author Scott Snyder is jumping back into the horror field, this is time with a three-issue mini-series for upstart publisher Dstlry.
Titled White Boat, the comic will reteam the writer, who became a superstar thanks to his Batman work for in DC in the 2010s, with artist Francesco Francavilla. The two collaborated on a horror mini-series titled Night of the Ghoul, which is now set up for adaptation at 20th Century Studios with 21 Laps producing.
According to the publisher, the boats in White Boats are the mega-yachts that the super-rich use to traverse the globe. They are floating islands where your every desire can be fulfilled. Getting invited on board should be a dream come true…that is, until the crew traps and transports its guests to a remote island where secret cults have existed for millennia, working on something called “The Human Project.”

One of the most exciting comic book industry announcements this year has been the formation of Dstlry, a new creator-owned publisher where the creators own part of the company, including writers and artists such as James Tynion IV, Scott Snyder, Jock, and more. Taking its name after the whiskey aging process, the debut publication is cleverly titled The Devil's Cut, and is a collection of 11 short stories, eight of which lead into full series.
One of those teams creating a full series is James Tynion and Christian Ward, who have been working on a haunted house epic titled Spectregraph, which is also the first story in the collection. We're thrilled to exclusively reveal a new direct-to-consumer variant cover for The Devil's Cut from Christian Ward for "Spectregraph" available only through www.dstlry.co, along with some incredible concept art!

This year’s San Diego Comic-Con will look very different from what people have come to expect over the last 15 years or so.
Thanks to the first double strike to hit the American entertainment industry since 1960, almost no members of the Writers Guild of America or SAG-AFTRA who work in TV or film will be attending in any official capacity. And without stars and scribes to draw in fans, TV and movie studios have mostly pulled out too.
That means, at this storied gathering of geeks, the comic book creators who are the ostensible reason the event exists will have the floor almost entirely to themselves.

There's not much you can say about Bruce Timm's contribution to Batman on-screen that hasn't been said. The architect of the DC Animated Universe has had a hand in pretty much all the Dark Knight's animated exploits, thanks mostly to his pioneering work alongside Eric Radmoski on "Batman: The Animated Series" back in the early '90s. There was so much that went into making that show great, including the voice talents of Kevin Conroy, who for many remains the definitive voice of Batman. But it was arguably the show's overall tone that made it so irresistible for a generation of kids.
Borrowing not from only from classic kids cartoons but from such unlikely sources as Alfred Hitchcock, who greatly influenced the look of the show, film noir, and a multitude of art styles, "Batman: Tas" was ostensibly a kids' show that didn't treat its audience like kids.

Some demon-dealing magicians get all the luck. After nearly two decades, Keanu Reeves will return to the role of John Constantine in a sequel to the 2005 cult hit "Constantine." Deadline reports that Warner Bros. has greenlit a "Constantine 2" starring Reeves and re-teaming him with director Francis Lawrence. "Constantine" was Lawrence's directorial debut and he went on to direct "I am Legend" and the "Hunger Games" sequels, so he's sharpened his talents and could potentially be back with an even better tale of Constantine's troubles. (John is always in trouble. That's his whole thing.)
While many fans might be asking "why now?," they should really be asking "why not?" Not only is Reeves still killing it as an action star in the "John Wick" franchise, but the character of Constantine has gained new interest due to the success of Netflix's "The Sandman" series, which turned the character into Joanna Constantine...

At least one headline afterward called it a disaster. It was 2016, and anybody could have predicted that the panel for Batman: The Killing Joke at San Diego Comic-Con was going to get dicey. The R-rated Warner Bros. Animation title was based on Alan Moore’s notoriously edgy comic. The post-screening Q&a soon got heated. One reporter shouted at the panel that young Barbara Gordon, aka Batgirl, was “using sex” to seduce her father figure, Bruce Wayne, then stormed off. “Wanna say that again, pussy?” screenwriter Brian Azzarello shot back from the stage. It was a cringey, headline-making exchange,...

One of DC’s biggest animated superhero movies is coming to Netflix in October. We’re talking about 2016’s Batman: The Killing Joke, an adaptation of Alan Moore and Brian Bolland’s iconic 1988 one-shot comic. The Joker-centric tale provides an origin for the villain, showing the circumstances which turned a failed comedian into the Clown Prince of Crime. It’s a classic story and one that’s gone on to have an enormous impact on Batman comics, not to mention being a major influence on last year’s Joker.
The movie features the voice talents of Kevin Conroy as Batman and Mark Hamill as Mr. J, with both actors explaining in interviews that throughout their long tenure in the roles, they’d always wanted to do The Killing Joke. But there’s a fly in the ointment.

I think it’s a pretty good indicator of how much The Joker has entered into popular culture that he now merits his own Anniversary Special. He’s been pretty popular since the days of the Batman TV show back in the 1960’s of course, though Cesar Romero’s Joker bears little resemblance to today’s. The Joker has gone from being a clownish villain, a villain who uses humour as his calling card, to more often than not a representation of pure anarchy in human form, fighting back against the law and order of society, personified in Batman. I’ve read articles before where we are told to see The Joker as the hero, embracing freedom of thought and action, and Batman has an instrument of control and repression. I doubt Bob Kane and Bill Finger had all that...

With filming on The Batman having commenced and pictures of the set already floating about online, I think we’re not too far away from an official reveal of Robert Pattinson in the Batsuit. After all, once he’s shooting in it, it’s only a matter of time before grainy long-lens shots hit the internet and I’m betting that Warner Bros. would rather us see a professionally shot promo pic instead. However, there are those who’ve already seen the suit and thanks to them, we’re starting to build an idea of what it could look like.

Here's our rundown of this year's coolest Batman collectibles.
80 years in and Batman is as popular as ever. Even as you read these words, work is underway on the next cinematic adventure for the Dark Knight, and Joker is still going strong in theaters -- so much so that Joaquin Phoenix and Todd Phillips are hiding away crafting the character's next solo film. The eight decades since Batman was first introduced in the pages of Detective Comics have seen him undergo countless changes, the versatility of the Caped Crusader is a huge part of his staying power. But when it comes down to the nitty gritty, Batman is just a hero at heart -- whether he's the goofy 1960s one or the grimdark Synder take. So you really can't go wrong with giving the gift of Batman, and here's some ideas to make your holiday shopping experience a Bat-tastic one!

Now that Joker has joined the $1 billion club – the first R-rated movie to do so – everybody is eager to find out what Warner Bros. and director Todd Phillips are planning next. We told you last month that Phillips and star Joaquin Phoenix would join forces once more for a direct sequel to Joker, with THR confirming our scoop earlier today, and on top of that, the outlet has also reported that Phillips is eager to begin development on films that examine other DC characters’ origins in new ways. Which, once again, is something that We Got This Covered first told you a month ago, with our sources saying that Mr. Freeze and Two-Face were getting their own films as well.
Apparently, while meeting with WB execs to hash out future plans, Phillips reportedly requested the rights to a “portfolio” of DC characters’ origin stories. He didn’t get that, but...

DC Black Label, which still sounds to me like a perfectly fine Scotch, is an imprint of DC designed to showcase more mature takes on DC characters. To my mind Vertigo already did that back in the early 1990′s, as did The Dark Knight Returns in the Eighties, so not so much an innovation as returning yet again to that well. Don’t get me started on how successive comic creators have misunderstood Frank Miller’s take on Batman, the ultra violent, weary, almost psychopathic obsessive, by using that take in the present day. The point was he was an Old Batman, worn down physically and mentally. Like I said, don’t get me started. It is relevant to this review though, as Azzarello’s Batman in this book has a certain similarity to Miller’s.

Brian Azzarello tells us about the genesis of Batman: Damned, the dawn of DC's Black Label, and how that John Constantine team-up happened.
When DC’s Black Label imprint was first announced, fans were promised that they would journey to the darkest edges of the DC Universe with some of the most brilliant creators as their guides. Batman: Damned, by Brian Azzarello and Lee Bermejo, kept that promise, delivering one of the most terrifying, challenging, and controversial DC projects in decades. With heart-stopping, fully-painted art by Bermejo, Batman: Damned is a horror mystery tale that sees Bruce Wayne trying to solve the murder of none other than the Joker. Batman enlists the aid of John Constantine (a character that Azzarello is very familiar with) to guide the Dark Knight through the mystical side of the DC Universe, where the Dark Knight must battle magic and demonic forces...

Black Canary, Huntress, and Harley team up in a new Birds of Prey series from Brian Azzarello and Emanuela Lupacchino.
With a movie coming out in February, DC is putting some heft behind a classic property. Brian Azzarello and Emanuela Lupacchino are bringing back the Birds of Prey in October with a new monthly series.
The Birds were originally introduced by Chuck Dixon and Dick Giordano in 1995 as a team-up between Black Canary and then wheelchair-bound genius strategist, ex-Batgirl and then-Oracle, Barbara Gordon. The team later grew to include...nearly every superhero woman in the DC Universe, from Judomaster to Poison Ivy to Huntress to Lady Blackhawk.
“I’m thrilled to work on Birds of Prey with Brian Azzarello,” Lupacchino said in a press release. “The Birds are a super-team I’ve never worked on before but that I‘ve always loved. Harley is shining with her craziness,...

When it comes to the timeless rivalry and friendship shared by Superman and Batman, I’m sure everyone has their own opinion regarding who would come out on top. And while this writer claims the Dark Knight as his favorite fictional character overall, I won’t deny that the Man of Steel would lay waste to him if he set his inhibitions aside – prep time or no prep time.
As you no doubt remember, the first live action brawl involving the two icons occurred three years ago in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice. Momentous as that battle was, it resulted in what the pro wrestling industry would term as a “squash” favoring the Caped Crusader. Big Blue got in a few good licks, sure, but you have to admit the fight appeared mostly one-sided.
Then again, it was apparent from the get-go that Superman didn’t want to use...

While everyone is looking forward to Avengers: Endgame – and so am I – it’s actually Todd Phillips’ Joker origin movie that tops my list of most anticipated flicks to hit theaters in 2019. Maybe it’s simply because the Clown Prince of Crime is my favorite villain, but it certainly helps when someone crafts a tale that looks like it will be one to remember for years to come.
As you may have figured, I can be counted among those impressed by the official trailer released just this morning. For the most part, I’ve seen positive reaction on social media, though there remain those who are skeptical. Honestly, folks who say they don’t like seeing the Joker romanticized have good reason to have reservations of their own, but I don’t think that’s quite what’s happening here – it was Suicide Squad that more so humanized the iconic evildoer.

The tricky part about centering any work of fiction on a villain is that you may have to portray them as the protagonist in a certain light. When it comes to DC, we’ve seen this happen with the likes of Lex Luthor, Deathstroke and Poison Ivy, but it’s important we not forget the terrible things these characters have done, even if an author is able to lend them more humanity.
In the case of the Clown Prince of Crime, however, Brian Azzarello explored him from a different angle when crafting his incredible graphic novel, Joker. If you’ve digested that, then you no doubt remember how the Ace of Knaves was examined from the perspective of henchman Jonny Frost, therefore readers wouldn’t sympathize for the titular nutjob.
From the look of it, director Todd Phillips may very well make Arthur Fleck a hero in a certain sense...

After 79 years, Batman’s penis has finally made its debut in the latest “Batman” comic.
The reveal happens in the first issue of “Batman: Damned,” a limited series from writer Brian Azzarello and artist Lee Bermej. In the scene in question, Batman/Bruce Wayne has returned to the Batcave and begins to pull off his Batsuit. Next come three panels in which a disrobed Bruce is lit from behind, the light clearly and unmistakably accentuating his genitalia.
As of right now, lil’ Wayne can be seen only in the print version of the issue — the digital version has been altered so the Dark Knight’s squire is obscured by shadow. DC Comics hasn’t commented publicly, but Polygon reports that the digital panel was changed because DC editorial doesn’t consider the nudity essential to the story. You can see the censored version right here below:

The prospect of a mid-budget Joker origin story produced by Martin Scorsese and starring Joaquin Phoenix is such an amazing idea that I’m perpetually worried some calamity will befall the production and it’ll be cancelled. I really, really want to see what this movie is going to be like, as it sounds like one of the most unique comic book adaptations currently in production. The pic has taken another small step towards reality today, too, as with shooting soon to commence, Joaquin Phoenix rocked up at the Deauville American Film Festival looking pretty damn Joker-y.
Sporting slicked back hair, a sinister grin and a noticeably more slender physique than his previous roles, it’s as though Phoenix is begging the internet’s legion of Photoshop experts to play Axis Chemicals and turn that hair a shade of acid green, his skin to alabaster white and his lips into blood-red slashes.

Basically, it feels like Free Comic Book Day all over again, only with the focus placed squarely on the timeless icon.

The standalone Joker movie from Todd Phillips and Joaquin Phoenix has entered the very early stages of development, that much we know, but a new listing from Production Weekly strongly suggests that the buzzworthy DC project already has a title to call its own.
First spotted by PursueNews (h/t Heroic Hollywood), this as-yet-unverified scrap of intel indicates that the film will simply release as Joker in due time, perhaps as a means of differentiating it from all the other Joker-related movies currently gestating in various stages of development – think Joker and Harley Quinn, as well as that standalone movie for Jared Leto’s Clown Prince of Crime.
It’s all part of Warner’s strategy to create novel stories that can exist independent from the ongoing Dceu and its own continuity. And while that’s all very exciting, plot details for the Joker pic are practically non-existent at this point.

Among the many “announced” DC films supposedly being on their way in the next few years – and there sure are a lot of them – none can be too sure of which will actually see the light of day. But whereas I’m less inclined to place my chips on, say, The New Gods or Cyborg, the upcoming Joker origin movie can lay claim to something that not many others on the alleged slate can: an actual green light given by the studio.
Interestingly enough, this picture will set itself apart from the rest of the DC Extended Universe because, for one, Joaquin Phoenix has been enlisted to play the Clown Prince of Crime, as opposed to Jared Leto. Furthermore, it’ll be afforded a smaller budget than most DC flicks (think around $55 million), and is said to be “an exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study,...

With a character like Superman having been in continuous publication for 80 years now, it’s difficult to calculate how many tales he’s been featured in – and perhaps even harder to choose a favorite.
If you’re also a fan of Big Blue, then you’re aware of how many classics the past three decades alone have offered. To name but a few, The Death of Superman, Superman for All Seasons, Birthright, All-Star Superman, Red Son and American Alien are some of those that’d likely be included on most short lists.
And though it’s always fun to engage in conversations where we debate our own Top 5’s or whatever, it’s intriguing to learn of which stories are favored by the actors fortunate enough to portray these characters. Though we as DC fans know that we can bet on seeing the likes of Aquaman, Shazam and Wonder Woman 2 in theaters over the course of the next two years, there’s really no concrete evidence supporting what lies beyond that. I mean, Birds of Prey will more than likely be the next on the docket, but it’s expected that only a fraction of the movies “announced” so far will make it to the finish line. That said, it’s probably a solid bet that priority projects such as The Batman and Suicide Squad 2 will be among those seeing the light of day.
Now, before we proceed, I ask that you take the following information with a grain of salt because it’s all being regarded at rumor at this point, but you may agree that each bit sounds quite plausible since they align with recent chatter we’ve been hearing.
