It was August when it was announced that veteran producer Debra Martin Chase had inked a 2-year deal at ABC Studios, which will see her develop TV projects through her company, Martin Chase Prods. The new deal brings Chase back to ABC, where she launced her TV career as exec producer of the 1997 musical film Cinderella starring Brandy and Whitney Houston. At the time, it was said that Chase was on the hunt for a "dedicated TV executive" to assist her in this new ABC deal. Apparently she's found one in Charles Pugliese (co-producer of I'm Not There for the big screen, and Gcb for TV). As Chase noted at the time... "The best drama now...

Exclusive: ABC has put in development Legacy, a drama from feature producer Debra Martin Chase, which is described as a sexy soap and a modern-day twist on the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations. Jeremy Anderson and Patrick Moss will write the script and will co-executive produce. Martin will executive produce. This marks Martin’s first sale under the overall deal with ABC Studios she signed in August. Under the pact, she was to hire a dedicated TV executive, which she has now done, bringing in Charles Pugliese as VP at Martin Chase Prods. Previously, he was VP of Production and Development at Darren Star Prods, where he most recently co-produced the ABC/ABC Studios dramedy Gcb. Prior to that, he was a producer at NYC-based Killer Films. Toronto -- The dealmaking continued at a deliberate pace at the Toronto International Film Festival on Monday as Sony Pictures Classics made its first buy of the fest by picking up the French and Arabic-language "Incendies."
The Weinstein Co. also continued to assert its presence at Tiff, closing a deal for Abe Sylvia's road-trip comedy "Dirty Girl" by ponying up about $3 million for rights to the U.S., U.K., France, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa.
Denis Villeneuve's "Incendies" is the story of twins, a brother and sister, who, following the death of their mother, travel to the Middle East to search for a brother and father they've never met.
The film, based on a stage play by Wajdi Mouawad, played to positive reactions at the Venice and Telluride fests, and SPC's six-figure deal was concluded before the movie's first public screening Monday evening.

Exclusive From Toronto: In the second major acquisition of the day at the Toronto Film Festival, Dirty Girl is near a deal to be acquired by The Weinstein Co for distribution in the U.S., France, UK, Australia/New Zealand, and South Africa. I'm told there is a guaranteed theatrical release, and that the deal is north of $3 million. The deal is coming together quickly, and in short proximity of the film making its Toronto premiere this evening. The Abe Sylvia-directed indie is set in the 1980s and is about a young lady who is considered the dirty girl of Norman High School. After she gets banished to a remedial class, she teams up with an innocent and they head out on a road trip of self discovery. The film stars Juno Temple, Dwight Yoakam, Milla Jovovich, and Willam H. Macy. Already today, IFC acquired the James Gunn-directed Super,...

- I guess you couldn't ask for anything more than a quality cast and the backing from competent producers if you are in the shoes of Canadian-born filmmaker Ruba Nadda. Screen Daily reports that Patricia Clarkson (Elegy) has boarded the project with co-stars Alexander Siddig (Un homme perdu), Elena Anaya (Savage Grace) and Tom McCamus set for filming. Cairo Time sees Clarkson play a woman (really?) who arrives in Cairo to meet her husband (McCamus) only to be told he is unavoidably delayed in Gaza and has in turn sent his friend (Siddig), a retired Egyptian police officer, to pick her up. The brief love affair that follows catches them both completely off guard. Executive produced by indie vets Christina Vachon and Charles Pugliese of Killer Films, and produced by Ireland's David Collins of Samson Films (Once) and the personable Daniel Iron of Foundry Films (Away From Her, Manufactured Landscapes
