When the National Press Club hosted a post-screening panel on the upcoming movie Anna, about Russian journalist and Vladimir Putin critic Anna Politkovskaya, the conversation — to not much of a surprise — led to Donald Trump and what his potential return to the White House would mean for democracy.
Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-ca) and former CIA director John Brennan joined journalist Bob Woodward for the post-screening event Wednesday evening, and each chimed in on the potential impact of another Trump presidency.
Woodward, who released 20 audio interviews with Trump as part of The Trump Tapes in 2022, said, “I think an important question about Trump is, ‘Who is he?'”
“In the course of these interviews I asked him, ‘What’s the job of the president?’ And he said, ‘To protect the people.’ Now that’s a good answer. He did not protect the people [in the Covid crisis]. And if you get into this — I think...

The family of Russian journalist Anna Politkovskaya has said an upcoming film inspired by her life is “grossly inaccurate” and misrepresents her work in a statement sent to journalists Tuesday afternoon.
In the statement, the family said it is “very concerned” by the film’s preliminary script, which they say contains “significant inaccuracies” and misrepresents Anna’s life, work, and family.
The film, previously titled Mother Russia, tells Anna’s story as a world-renowned journalist and human rights activist who went from being a local print journalist to braving the Chechen killing fields and exposing Russian state corruption under Vladimir Putin.
Anna refused to give up reporting on the war in Chechnya despite numerous acts of intimidation and violence, including being poisoned. She was ultimately murdered in the elevator of her block of flats, and it remains unclear who paid for the contract killing.
BAFTA-nominee Maxine Peake (The Village) plays Anna in the biopic.

MOSCOW -- By Monday, Russian television had relegated Saturday night's murder of crusading journalist Anna Politkovskaya to third- or fourth-tier briefs in news bulletins here, despite the growing worldwide outcry over the killing of the campaigning Novaya Gazeta newspaper reporter. As news of developments in North Korea's uranium-enrichment program and Russia's continuing diplomatic standoff with its southern neighbor Georgia topped state and commercial television news shows Monday, the murder -- which hit front pages in most of the British press Sunday -- had already dropped low on the agenda, despite growing international media criticism of President Vladimir Putin's silence on the killing. Monday's daytime TV news bulletins focused on the release of CCTV footage showing Politkovskaya's murderer following her from a supermarket to the elevator of her apartment in central Moscow's Lesnaya street late Saturday, where he shot her three times in the chest and once in the head.
