BBC and ITV enraged the government with early portrayals of the conflict but it is being supplanted by recent conflicts
British TV deployed rapidly – and with frequent controversy – to attack the Falklands war as a subject. The assiduous historical website British Television Drama records, in the decade after the war, 10 dramas based on the conflict.
The BBC screened five plays within five years of the events, which may surprise those who now associate the corporation with editorial caution and at the time clearly astonished the Ministry of Defence, which made numerous objections and obstructed access to actual locations and equipment.
The earliest pieces were oblique, with Don Shaw's The Falklands Factor dramatising an 18th-century dispute over the islands, and Maggie Wadey's The Waiting War focusing on military and naval families. ITV also enraged the MoD and the government with a children's series, Jan Needle's A Game of Soldiers,...

Falklands War hero Simon Weston has branded Sean Penn a "fool" after the actor waded into the recently re-ignited debate over ownership of the islands.
The Milk star sparked controversy this week (beg13Feb12) when he accused the British government of "ridiculous colonialism" over its ownership of the archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean.
But Weston, who was among British troops who saw off an invasion of the Falklands by Argentinian forces in 1982, has hit back at the Hollywood star, insisting his comments are idiotic.
Welshman Weston, who suffered horrific burns when the naval ship he was on was bombed and set on fire, tells The Sun, "People give too much credence to actors. Sean Penn is living, breathing proof that just because you are famous doesn't mean you know what you are talking about.
"Penn is an idiot. It's bad for people to think you're a fool. You don't need to open your mouth to prove it. By opening his mouth on this, Sean Penn proves he is a fool."
Weston provided one of the lasting images of the Falklands War when he went public with his severe injuries on a TV show.

Sean Penn has been branded an "idiot" by war veteran Simon Weston for his attack on Britain's claim to the Falkland Islands.
The Hollywood actor launched a tirade against British "colonialism" earlier this week as the row between Argentina and Britain over the sovereignty of the islands deepens.
Penn said the deployment of Prince William to the islands as a search and rescue pilot was "unthinkable" and that dialogue was the only way to solve the dispute.
But Weston, who fought and was injured in the 1982 war, told The Sun newspaper that Penn should keep his "gob shut".
"People give far to much credence to actors," he told The Sun. "Sean Penn is living, breathing proof of the fact that just because you are famous doesn't mean you know what you are talking about."
He added: "Penn is an idiot. It's bad for people to think you're a fool."

Falklands veteran Simon Weston has been appointed as an advisor on 'Downton Abbey'. The 50-year-old former Welsh Guardsman - who suffered severe burns in 1982 - was called upon by producers for the ITV period drama to give actor Trevor White, who will play soldier Patrick Gordon, advice about facial disfigurement. Simon said: "We got on incredibly well. He wanted to know some things about disfigurement and what it should look like. I told him about different sores and how it can be around the edges of a skin graft. "There is always scarring that does not heal and to make...
