This is the first of two dispatches from Michael Pattison on International Film Festival Rotterdam 2014.
Here’s a thought. Too many films are being made, and too many festivals are showing them. The idea occurs to me while attending International Film Festival Rotterdam (Iffr). You want to talk about the state of Europe (and by extension, its cinema), as one section of this year’s Iffr aims to do? Fine. But if you’re bemoaning budget cuts while throwing an odiously named ‘industry party’ with a complimentary tab of at least €2,000 (the tills were viewable from the drunken side of the bar), things start to look a little tricky.
Not to single one festival out. As the Beautiful South song goes, “This could be Rotterdam, or anywhere, Liverpool or Rome…” As social events, film festivals ineluctably express the contradictions of their time. Sponsorship deals often see cultural institutions climb into bed with big business,...

Reviewing a band’s debut album is difficult. It may be fantastic because it is the result of years of hard work or it may be underwhelming but show the roots of what the band could become in the future. Either way it is often hard to fully grasp where a band is coming from on the back of one full length release. Bauer make it easy. Having been around for the best part of a decade as a support act, Greg Matthews, Neil Treppas, Lee Bradbury and Michael Reed have produced a debut that is so assured it leaves you in no doubt as to what this band are about.
There is a Dutch band that shares the same name but from the first word there can be no confusion. This Bauer are obviously a Manchester band. They have the lifeblood of the city’s...

Paul Heaton has revealed that he has become a pub landlord after buying a lease to a public house in Salford. The former Beautiful South frontman told the Manchester Confidential that taking over the King's Arms pub was "too good a chance to miss". Heaton explained that he uses the upstairs portion of the house as rehearsal space for his music. "It just came along and we wanted to take it on," he said. He added: "It's a bit of a fractured community around the pub, with city centre flats on one side and Salford (more)...

The Wire star Reg E. Cathey narrowly escaped serious injury on Thursday when a lighting rig crashed to the stage at the Manchester International Festival in England while he was performing.
The actor joined British singer Paul Heaton onstage at the event to fulfil his role as narrator on his track The 8th, but the concert came to an abrupt halt when a lighting tower collapsed, prompting the 52 year old to leap out of the way to avoid being crushed.
The show was stalled for almost an hour, before Cathey, who injured his knee in the incident, reappeared with former Beautiful South star Heaton.
And his bravery has earned him the respect of festival spokesperson Najda Coyne.
She says, "He soldiered on - he had an ice pack on his knee and he has been amazing."...

British singer Paul Heaton has publicly slammed the Kings of Leon for their unfriendly behavior, insisting they were the only band to not be "nice" to him at this weekend's V Festival in England.
The former The Beautiful South frontman performed sets before the U.S. rockers at both Saturday's Staffordshire V and Sunday's Essex V - and used his performance on the second day to hammer the "Use Somebody" hitmakers for their bad attitude from the day before.
Heaton took aim at Caleb Followill and Nathan Followill and their bandmates for having their own compound and for failing to mingle with the other acts. He told his fans, "I don't like Kings Of Leon; they've got their own compound. We couldn't get in because we didn't have beards... Everyone has been really nice except the Kings."...

The Beautiful South have confirmed that they are reforming without frontman Paul Heaton. Performing under the name The New Beautiful South, the pop group will play the Welly Club in their hometown Hull on March 29. "We never really split up - all that happened was Paul made the decision to leave," drummer David Stead told The Hull Daily Mail. "But Dave, Alison and I wanted to continue. We've been twiddling our thumbs for a while, but this is what we do best. "There are still an awful lot of people out there who want to hear our music and (more)...
