Women in Animation (WiA) has released a featurette during Annecy Film Festival highlighting the valuable work of its mentorship program.
The 14-minute video sees testimonies from both mentors – including animation writer Aydrea Walden, Alice Goldstone of Sony Pictures Animation and Pixar Animation’s Becki Tower – and mentees, many of whom have built portfolios and even gotten their first jobs after participating in the program. The program also caters to those who are further along in their careers and looking to make the next professional or creative jump.
“The one thing that we know for a fact is that there is no shortage of female talent,” WiA president and head of Crunchyroll Studios Marge Dean tells Variety. “Just looking at the numbers of women who pursue careers in animation by going to schools and really, any kind of entry level activity is usually overwhelmingly female.”
Yet those same women don’t seem to materialize in studios.

The Women in Animation (Wia) 2021 spring mentorship program will be taking applications starting March 31, with a special focus on mentoring women of color through its Mentor Circles series. In a new development, the Wia mentorship program is collaborating for the first time with Black N’Animated, LatinX in Animation, and Rise Up Animation to directly advance career opportunities for women of color in the animation industry. While applicants are not limited to people of color, they are strongly encouraged to apply through these partnerships. As part of the collaboration, each organization recruited and referred industry mentors from their networks, adding to Wia’s pool of mentors.
“We’re very excited to be partnering with Wia for their Mentor Circles program,” said Waymond Singleton and Breana Williams, co-founders of Black N’Animated. “By having more mentors of color in these types of spaces it emphasizes that women of color, especially Black women,...

On Thursday, Women In Animation announced the opening of its 2021 Spring Mentorship Program, which will look to help advance the careers of women of color.
For the first time, organizations including Black N’Animated, LatinX in Animation and Rise Up Animation will collaborate with Wia on its Mentor Circles.
Having made an ongoing commitment to bring gender parity to animation by 2025, Wia’s mentorship program connects women and gender non-binary individuals at all levels of the industry—and who are pursuing a variety of creative roles—to knowledgeable mentors, who can advise them on their next professional steps, and help them meet their career goals. While the 2021 program was conceived with women of color in mind, applications are open to all.
Though the Covid-19 pandemic has made in-person gatherings trickier, the quarantine period has inspired Wia to go virtual, launching a proprietary online platform, for the organization and management of mentorship groups.

Prithee, tell me, is thou in the mood for mood for a web series that marries Victorian culture to contemporary racial politics? If so, hie thee to Black Girl In A Big Dress. Aydrea Walden's fish-out-of-water tale is a witty comedy that seeks to break down and analyze several social conventions of the present day.
The titular Black Girl In A Big Dress is Adrienne, portrayed by Walden. In her free time, Adrienne dons frilly clothes from the 19th century and heads to period-appropriate garden parties, where she seeks both friendship and the affection of gentlemanly suitors. In the real world, she struggles to reconcile her old-fashioned ideas with the complexities of 21st-century life and love while also meeting some resistance to her unusual pastime. In the premiere episode, for example, she gets herself into a bind when she realizes she does not have a change of clothes to...
