Miami — In two signs of the growing dynamism of Catalonia’s TV scene, Barcelona-based film-tv indie studio Filmax has licensed “Dating in Barcelona” to Amazon’s Prime Video.
Produced by Filmax, Catalan public broadcaster 3Cat and Prime Video in Spain, “Dating in Barcelona” bowed last year in Spain to big ratings, both on its first-window debut on 3Cat and on Prime Video, where it bowed to become one of the streaming service’s most-watched debuts. A modern take on romance and sex in an online age, “Dating in Barcelona” also reflects a swing in TV towards a lighter, more episodic fare, whether in crime thrillers or other categories. Each episode features two dates which, as Variety has observed, play off each other.
Powered in creative terms by Pau Freixas, behind iconic series from “Red Band Society” to “I Know Who You Are” and “Todos Mienten,” all produced by Filmax, “Dating...

Inspired by the simmering one-man rebellion that kicked off a tremendous tide-change in Barcelona, writer-director Marcel Barrena (“Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea”) and Spain’s The Mediapro Studio have begun filming “The 47.”
Tms has released first look images. The premise centers on social activist bus driver Manolo Vital, played by three-time Goya Award winner Eduardo Fernández (“Smoke & Mirrors”), as he grows increasingly outraged at the abject neglect faced by immigrant communities outside the city’s center, whose neighborhoods, peeled by immigrants from Extremadura and Andalusia, had only just achieved running water.
Stonewalled by the City Council, Vital seizes a bus used on Barcelona’s #47 line and extends its route to Torre Baró in an attempt to prove that the vehicle can safely service the outlying communities in need.
“What the film shows is that this good man tried to convince everyone that it was feasible. The contempt of...

El 47, the latest feature from Spanish production powerhouse Mediapro Studio, is kicking into gear with cameras set to roll on the pic in Barcelona in the coming days.
Directed by Marcel Barrena (Mediterraneo: The Law of the Sea), the pic is billed as a “tribute to the working class and to the men and women who built our cities, not only physically but also culturally.” The pic tells the story of Manolo Vital, a bus driver who helped create modern Barcelona during the city’s 1970s boom. Barrena co-wrote the pic with Alberto Marini (El desconocido).
Synopsis reads: In the 1960s and 70s Spain, rural Barcelona was built, for the most part, by immigrants from Extremadura and Andalusia who, although they had built the neighborhoods with their bare hands, were still not considered part of the city. Their homes didn’t even have running water or electricity. Tired of hearing...

“Dating in Barcelona” has left to big ratings in Spain, both on its first window debut on Catalan public network TV3 and on Amazon’s Prime Video, where it bowed to become the streaming services most watched show.
Barcelona-based Filmax, the series production house, is now bringing the show to Conecta Fiction as one of its banner new offerings.
Written by Pau Freixas Èric Navarro, Ivan Mercadé, Clara Esparrach and Eduard Sola, it follows in the course of an episode two dates happening simultaneously in the city of Barcelona. Drawing contrast and larger social point from one another, the series manages to make insightful commentary on the modern ways of dating while shuttling dynamically from each story, always maintaining a lighter mood.

"The deaths – are they accidents... or murder?" Screen Media Films has unveiled the official trailer for a thriller titled The Man from Rome, which is the English title given to this Spanish film starring Richard Armitage in Italy. This already opened in Europe last year under the original Spanish name La Piel Del Tambor, though it doesn't seem like it's good enough to get a proper theatrical release in the US. Vatican intelligence operative Father Quart (Richard Armitage) investigates an anonymous message sent to the pope concerning a crumbling Spanish church that "kills to defend itself". Sent to Seville to investigate, a deep conspiracy unfolds that puts Father Quart's loyalty and his faith to the test. Armitage co-stars with Amaia Salamanca, Paul Guilfoyle, Paul Freeman, Rodolfo Sancho, Fionnula Flanagan, Carlos Cuevas, along with Franco Nero as "El Papa", The Pope. This looks so wacky - Vatican hackers, a priest with a gun,...

It is the first Italian production to receive the backing of pan-European co-production initiative The Alliance, created last year by the major European public service broadcasters, Rai, France Télévisions and Zdf.
The series is created by Frank Spotnitz (“Medici”) and Steve Thompson (“Sherlock”) and directed by Dan Percival (“The Man in the High Castle”) and Alexis Sweet (“Don Matteo”).
The cast also includes Giancarlo Giannini (“Catch 22”), Matilda De Angelis (“The Undoing”), Freddie Highmore (“The Good Doctor”), Carlos Cuevas (“Merlì”) and James D’Arcy (“Broadchurch”).

Movistar Plus is betting once more on the re-branding of original Spanish content via “spin offs” wrapped in higher production values and an identity of their own. A bet which had worked previously on “Velvet Collection” and most likely will again with new production “Merlí: Sapere Aude.”
In the last few years, a clutch of Spanish series have managed to become global hits, still pretty small productions – judged by Hollywood standards – with solid core concepts and dynamic direction that greatly benefited from the distribution of the new platforms. Yet the case of “Merlí,” a Catalan series produced by Barcelona-based Catalan public broadcaster TV3, also broadcast on Atresmedia’s La Sexta and bought by Netflix – remains quite unique:
Rarely if ever has a show that blatantly deals with philosophical conundrums inside a class room become a world-wide phenomenon and created a fandom in almost all Spanish speaking countries.

Berlin — Spanish broadcast network Atresmedia and Bambu Producciones teamed on two milestones in the international outreach of Spanish series: “Gran Hotel” and “Velvet,” whose avid audiences, especially in Latin America, proved there was a mass audience abroad for original Spanish series, not just their formats. Atresmedia and others – Netflix, for example – took note.
Having linked for “Fariña,” one of the biggest free-to-air hits in Spain last year, Atresmedia and Bambu are back with “45 Revoluciones.” Shooting from October, a trailer for the 13-part series was presented by Atresmedia Television’s Antonio Salso, head of acquisitions and sales, on Monday afternoon at a Berlin Drama Series Days Spanish TV Showcase. Its pedigree is instantly recognizable.
Created by Ramon Campos and Gema R. Neira, the series is produced by Bambu’s Campos and Teresa Fernandez Valdés and Atresmedia Television head of fiction Sonia Martínez, also a guiding spirit of Atresmedia Studios.

Lock-up
Stars: Adolfo Fernández, Marcel Borràs, Carlos Cuevas, Irene Escolar | Written by Pere Saballs i Nadal | Directed by Xavi Giménez
It’s not until 15 minutes into the film that the title shows up, but after a lengthy introduction to the central characters, and the problems between them, you’ve all but forgotten that the title hasn’t appeared.
Lock-Up is indeed the title, see, I even managed to give this review a lengthy introduction before dropping the title. It’s a really good technique and something I might start employing when I write from now on. I digress, the attention this review was holding from the first paragraph has just been self-destructed by diverting your mind away from what was going to be a hard-hitting and intense review, into what has become a self-indulgent load of nonsense.
Where were we? Oh yes, Lock-Up, the first 15 minutes really form the basis...
