The Grammys love Jack Antonoff, but so far mostly for his work with other artists like Taylor Swift, Lana Del Rey and St. Vincent. He has won Producer of the Year, Non-Classical, for the last three years in a row. That ties him with David Foster, Quincy Jones and Pharrell Williams as the second most awarded individual in the category (Babyface leads with four career wins). But so far his own band Bleachers hasn’t gotten on the academy’s radar. Can their latest self-titled release, which dropped March 8, earn them recognition?

The Dandy Warhols have joined forces with Guns N’ Roses guitarist Slash for the new song “I’d Like to Help You with Your Problem.”
It’s the latest single from the Dandy Warhols’ upcoming album Rockmaker, out March 15th. As if to make good that album title, the Dandy’s tapped none other than Slash himself for the self-described “Vietnam-era acid rock” song.
The churning chord progression and big hooks are right in Slash’s wheelhouse, and he adds some captivating wah-wah leads and ostensibly the solo in the middle of the song. It’s a seamless collaboration — with some uncanny axework from a living legend.
“The first time we heard it back in our studio we just stared at each other with our mouths open,” said frontman Courney Taylor-Taylor. “What he played on the track is amazing. I’ve never heard him play quite like that, but what...

Once upon a time on the West Coast, two bands were plotting a revolution.
Well, really, it was one musician concocting a grand plan to dismantle the record industry, bring back a massive revival of 1960s psychedelic rock, and achieve total world domination. His name was Anton Newcombe, and this singer/multi-instrumentalist fronted a San Francisco group blessed with one of the greatest names of any 1990s band: the Brian Jonestown Massacre. The only thing better than their moniker was the music itself, which replicated the vintage, acid-soaked sounds of...

‘Dig! Xx’ Review: Ondi Timoner’s Outstanding 2004 Rock Doc Is Back For More – Sundance Film Festival
At the height of its failure, every day was Altamont for the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the San Francisco outfit founded in 1990 by Anton Newcombe, the Klaus Kinski of psychedelic rock. Just in time for this 20th anniversary overhaul of Ondi Timoner’s breakthrough documentary, the Bjm were back in the news as recently as November 2023, when the first night of an Australian tour ended in a riot. That the riot was confined to the stage, and played out in front of a dumbfounded audience, is Dig! Xx in a nutshell, a welcome return for a film that no less an authority than Dave Grohl calls, in a specially filmed new intro, “the greatest rock ’n’ roll documentary of all time.”
It helps to have a working knowledge of the two bands it features — the Bjm and Portland alt-rockers The Dandy Warhols — but Dig! Xx works on a meta level too,...

One week before production is scheduled to start on writer-director Ondi Timoner’s “Mapplethorpe,” the biopic starring Matt Smith as photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, “Imposters” actress Marianne Rendón has been cast as Patti Smith, IndieWire has learned. The role was originally slated for Zosia Mamet until she dropped out over scheduling conflicts.
What the film doesn’t have, however, is the support of Patti Smith.

Having completed her debut TV series, and with a film about Robert Mapplethorpe in production, the director talks about why she’s drawn to ‘impossible visionaries’
Ondi Timoner still has her first video camera. She called her Flo, and now Flo is in five pieces, stuck to the wall of Timoner’s office in Los Angeles. “I threw her off the roof of Capitol Records,” she explains, “because she stopped recording when I was shooting the Dandy Warhols at the beginning of Dig!.”
Dig! is the documentary that made the director’s name when, in 2004, it won the Sundance grand jury prize. Her original plan had been to make a film about the music industry and what happens when artists get signed to major labels – “the collision of art and commerce” – by following 10 bands for a year. Music documentaries are a genre unto their own – sometimes they give you a glimpse behind the scenes of your favourite band, and sometimes they’re about someone you’ve never heard about who become your favourite band. With that in mind, here’s a rundown of the Top 10 Best Music Documentaries of all time:
Anvil! The Story Of Anvil
An opening of Heavy Metal icons such Slash, Lemmy and Lars Ulrich singing the praises of a band you’ve never heard of makes you think it’s all just a Spinal Tap style spoof. But no, after never quite hitting the big time in the early 80s, Canadian Metal band Anvil have still been plugging away despite the lack of success – at the beginning of the film frontman Steve “Lips” Kudlow is having to make a living delivering school dinners in Toronto! It’s a heart-warming underdog tale of never giving up your dream.

For animator/illustrator Robert Valley, the imperfections of life and art magnificently come together in his Oscar-nominated short, “Pear Cider and Cigarettes,” about his friendship with a self-destructive daredevil, who died despite reaching out to the filmmaker for help to get a liver transplant in China.
Valley first wrote about his childhood friend, Techno, in two self-published graphic novels. He was a gifted athlete but, even at a young age, drawn to danger like a moth to the flame. It’s a dark, tragic, passionate account of the American Dream gone bad and the idealism of loyalty and hero worship.

Miranda Lee Richards, one of my favorite L.A.-based singer-songwriters, was in town a few weeks ago playing songs from the inspired Echoes of the Dreamtime, her third studio album and first release in more than six years. "7th Ray," the first track and single from said album, is an atmospheric, mid-tempo, psychedelic-folk-rock rumination on love and life. Wearing her love like heaven, layered electric and acoustic guitars weave in and out of the nuanced mix and then suddenly a Mellotron adds yet another delectable dollop of color to keep you hitting your repeat key. She's currently on a West Coast tour with the Dandy Warhols, making stops in L.A., San Francisco, Seattle, and Portland. For fans of Laura Marling and Joni Mitchell alike. Thanks to streaming services such as Netflix, we’ve never had better access to documentaries. A whole new audience can discover that these real life stories are just as thrilling, entertaining, and incredible as the latest big-budget blockbuster. What’s more, they’re all true too. But with a new found glut of them comes the ever more impossible choice, what’s worth your time? Below is my pick of the 50 best modern feature length documentaries.
I’ve defined modern as being from 2000 onwards, which means some of the greatest documentaries ever made will not feature here. I’m looking at you Hoop Dreams.
50. McConkey (2013)

Show of hands if you spent a lot of college listening to Remy Zero or Paula Cole on your Winamp?
Okay, you can put your hands down. (We can't see them.) But, we can see why you opened up your ears to the aforementioned artists -- they blessed us with two of the best teen TV show theme songs in the history of time.
From "Smallville's" apt "Save Me," to "I Don't Want to Wait" from "Dawson's Creek," we've assembled more memorable themes you shouldn't feel embarrassed adding to your Spotify.
7. "My So-Called Life Theme" From "My So-Called Life" (1994 - 1995)
If high-school angst and nostalgia had theme music, this would be it. No lyrics, just all the feels.
6. 'Where You Lead" From "Gilmore Girls" (2000 - 2007)
The Gilmores arguably have the most "fall as f**k" theme ever made. Which probably explains why we never fast-forward through it during our binge watching sessions.

Russell Brand has cancelled his keynote address at the South by Southwest music and arts festival.
The comedian had been scheduled to open up the festival tonight (March 13) in Austin, ahead of the premiere of new documentary Brand: A Second Coming.
Director Ondi Timoner's documentary feature chronicles Brand's growing interest in political causes and social issues over the last few years.
Brand was scheduled to introduce the movie at the Paramount Theatre at 6.30pm local time tonight, but has now penned a lengthy statement to explain his discomfort with the film.

What goes on tour stays on tour – unless it's caught on camera. With classic Beatles comedy A Hard Day's Night returning to UK cinemas on July 4, and Metallica's triumphant set at Glastonbury reminding us how far they've come from darker days, now feels like the time to look back on some of the movies that prove that maxim.
Below, we catalogue the craziest music movies ever made, helpfully divided into four distinct categories of weirdness.
Bad Behaviour
Beginning with its 70-something subject attacking the director with his walking stick, Beware Of Mr Baker (2012) introduces a man – ex-Cream drummer Ginger Baker – so bellicose he's made the whole world his practice kit. Like Brick Top from Snatch with even greater anger-management issues, Baker is a bitter old codger who "communicates more through his drums than his words", according to his long-suffering daughter. He certainly doesn't mince the latter.

A mysterious black horse and a cloaked death-like figure travel through the dreams and nightmares of a young boy in “Evil Things,” the new video from dark psychedelic rockers The Black Angels. Directed by artist/photographer/filmmaker Kevin Castanheira, the film's haunting imagery compliments the droning, pulsing cosmic tones and heavy, Sabbath-style rhythms that permeate the band's critically-acclaimed new album Indigo Meadow. The Black Angels hail from Austin, Texas, and recently played South By Southwest on the heels of a Winter tour with the legendary Roky Erickson (one of the giants of postmodern rock). They will be curating their own seventh annual Austin Psych Fest on May 2nd through 4th, featuring bands like The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Loop, The Dandy Warhols and Panda Bear. Be sure to also check out the Psycho-inspired video for Melinda Ortner's “One More Day,” which debuted on Fearnet to coincide with the Season 2 premiere of Bates Motel.

There’s a rare breed of television show that makes the leap into becoming a feature film. Most have been paint-by-numbers modernizations, desecrating the source material, while others are made-for-television productions that waited too long for some type of forced reunion. So what happens when Veronica Mars, a cult TV show that aired on the Upn/CW gets a second chance to say, ‘thanks’ through a crowd-sourced film, seven years after if left the air?
The fate of the Veronica Mars Movie was placed in the Mars diehards, dubbed “marshmallows” with bleeding hearts. Over 90,000 financiers banded together and raised $5.7 million, nearly three times the original goal (prompting Warner Bros. to pitch in too). A long time ago, we used to be friends…
Any true Marshmallow knows the rest of the words. The rousing 2003 Dandy Warhols tune “We Used to Be Friends” underscored the opening credits of Veronica Mars throughout its three seasons on the air. Even though it had a radio life outside of the show (it was even used on an episode of The O.C.!), the song belongs to Veronica Mars. Like all great theme songs, it has become indistinguishable from the show itself.
But Veronica and the rest of the gang have evolved in the past decade, and a new era...

The first line of the Veronica Mars theme song, "We Used to Be Friends" by The Dandy Warhols, speaks of a broken friendship that has dissolved into memory, but what.s strange is that the relationship between the show and its fans couldn.t be more opposite. While the series only lasted three seasons and was cancelled all the way back in 2007, so-called "Marshmallows" have never given up hope that we would get to see more of the spunky private detective played by Kristen Bell. It turns out that keeping hope alive actually does pay off sometimes. One of the most significant stories of last year unfolded on March 13th when the creative team behind Veronica Mars began a Kickstarter campaign that they hoped would help get the movie made. This plan worked out insanely well, as the project broke site records and ultimately raised $5.7 million. Production came together just...

It does not seem long ago when we were merely discussing the possibility of a “Veronica Mars” movie. Its Kickstarter campaign was the subject of much scrutiny and debate, but the TV show’s fans have spoken, and now we’re just one month away from the movie’s theatrical release. Co-written and directed by the show’s creator, Rob Thomas, the movie stars Kristen Bell, Krysten Ritter, Jason Dohring, Ryan Hansen, Francis Capra, Enrico Colantoni, Ken Marino, Martin Starr, and Gaby Hoffman. And if a “Veronica Mars” movie is simply not enough to appease you, then maybe its accompanying soundtrack will do the trick. The “Veronica Mars” motion picture soundtrack, as well as the original score, will get released on March 4th, thanks to WaterTower Music. The album features artists such as Zz Ward, Sufjan Stevens, and Lou Rawls. Meanwhile, the show’s theme song will also be in the album,...

Last week I cheated a bit by offering up Emma Thompson as a potential gay icon. She’s so damn legendary, not to mention outspoken and off the cuff, that she’s basically entitled to any name, rank, and throne she pleases. She made out with Meryl Streep in Angels in America, people. She is gayer than most things.
I’m bringing it back to the newer-school candidates this week with the charming, preternaturally lovable Kristen Bell, who voices the lead princess Anna in the charming (and gay-tinged, if you ask me) new Disney animated feature Frozen. Bell has wooed us for more than a decade on the big screen, and we’re coming up on the ten-year anniversary of her much-mourned WB series (and upcoming film!) Veronica Mars. She just gets it. As many iTunes lovers and Youtube fanatics understand, music (old and new) has become a huge factor on hit television shows and both the show and artists featured benefit from the collaboration. Ever YouTube a certain scene from your favorite show for hours on end? Did it have a catchy song that you immediately downloaded? Yes, the odds are that you have.
Television show soundtracks are an obsession over here and the music played make that specific scene that much more memorable. Remember "Hide and Seek" when Marissa Cooper killed Ryan's brother Trey? What about "Paint the Silence" by Dice when Marissa kissed Ryan on the ferris wheel? Thought so. The O.C. has had so many hits like Phantom Planet's "California" and even the cover of "Forever Young" by Youth Group, but here's to 10 more that made just as much of an impact.
Also, stay tuned weekly here at...

I'd be lying if I told you that I was aware of the Dandy Warhols before Veronica Mars used their song "We Used to Be Friends" as its theme, but in my defense I've followed their career rather attentively ever since. Now granted, that means I arrived pretty late to the Dandy Warhol-ian party and that represents an almost willful ignorance of the Portland group's previous hit "Bohemian Like You" which at the time of its release was rather widely played. For that I apologize. Moving on to the present day, the Dandy Warhols released their ninth studio album This Machine back in April, and stands like (yet another) testament to the band's ability to maintain itself and refine their sound to fit a number of different genres while still maintaining their signature energetic mellow through the last 14 years. Below you'll find the music video for "Sad Vacation" off the new album,...

What began as a Primal Scream problem has been turned over to The Dandy Warhols.
The trouble began earlier this week, when UK Home Secretary Theresa May used a song at a Conservative party conference that was thought to be Primal Scream's 1994 song "Rocks." Apparently, someone at the conference wrongly informed Labour MP Kerry McCarthy that it was the Primal Scream song, and McCarthy had what is the knee-jerk reaction nowadays -- took to Twitter to post a link to the lyrics, which begin like so: "Dealers keep dealing'/Thieves keep thieving'/Whores keep whorin'/Junkies keep scorn'/Trade is on the meat rack/Strip joints full of hunchbacks/Bitches keep bitchin'/Clap keeps itching'."
Why he wanted everyone to associate these lyrics with the Tory Party is another confusing twist. Long story short, this traveled down the Twitter-vine to Primal Scream themselves, who, what do you know, also...

The lead singer of the Dandy Warhols has hit out at the Conservative party after they used one of the band's tracks at a political event. It was originally reported that Home Secretary Theresa May walked offstage to Primal Scream track 'Rocks' at a party conference, after which the group said that they were "disgusted" that she had used their music despite having different political beliefs. It then emerged that the song used was actually The Dandy Warhols's 'Bohemian Like You', which caused frontman Courtney Taylor-Taylor to launch a tirade of his own. Taylor-Taylor wrote on the band's official website: "Wtf? Where do I bitch about this? I'll tear their fuggin heads off. Well maybe not but this happened to us in an Arkansas gubernatorial race and it makes me super angry. And then I wanna puke.

Update: It has since emerged that Theresa May in fact walked offstage to The Dandy Warhols' 'Bohemian Like You', rather than Primal Scream's 'Rocks' - The incident occurs 2 hours 17 minutes into the BBC coverage of the Conservative Party conference. Primal Scream have criticised the Conservative Party after Home Secretary Theresa May used their single 'Rocks' as her walking-off music at the Tory party conference yesterday. The band said that it was inappropriate for May to use the 1994 Give Out But Don't Give Up track because of her political differences from the band. "Primal Scream are totally disgusted that the Home Secretary Theresa May ended her speech at the Tory Party conference with our song 'Rocks'," a band statement to Q magazine read. "How inappropriate. As three forthcoming films attest, music biographies are at their most compelling when warring egos are intrinsic to the tale
Who actually watches rock documentaries? It's a persistent question, invited yet again by three prestigious new studies of George Harrison (Martin Scorsese's Living in the Material World), U2 (Davis Guggenheim's From the Sky Down) and Pearl Jam (Cameron Crowe's Pearl Jam Twenty). While not as Pravda-like as the record company-funded featurettes you find on DVD extras or late-night TV, they are all films made by fans for fans. The latter two (Scorsese's epic is more searching) are basically benign propaganda about decent people overcoming obstacles in the name of musical excellence.
The problem lies less with individual film-makers than with the form itself. I've seen a lot of rock documentaries and would recommend maybe a dozen. In the vast majority, the stories are so well-established that all...

It is not every day that we come across bands that remind us of why we fell in love with music. We grew up listening to the psychedelic sounds of The Dandy Warhols, Zero 7 and The Shins. The beauty that is exuded from these 90s bands, both instrumentally and vocally, is largely non-existent in the auto-tone society we live in today. Despite this “factual” statement, we will not spend anymore time discussing the musical negativity of the 21st Century because we have found a band that has resurrected the 90s traits we have been missing since our teenage years. So, there is hope that the whimsical sounds of the...

Last week was bad gigs week – and in fact, Paul Lester's fun-packed three pages of interviews of musicians talking about their worst-ever stage experiences drew near-universal approval. Lots of people suggested their own worst gigs, of which more later.

The Summer of the Superhero continues unabated with Martin Campbell’s Green Lantern, which took a mild commercial snubbing and a severe critical one this past weekend. How bad could it be, really? Listen if you dare find out the answer. Meanwhile, since we’re running out of franchises to review, we turn back to 1995 for another sci-fi actioner / comic-book adaptation about an imaginary law enforcer: Judge Dredd. But which movie will fare better by our estimation? Truly, a battle for the ages.

On Tuesday, the Kings of Leon unveiled the trailer for "Talihina Sky," their first (and, some might say, inevitable) foray into the wild world of rock docs. Still a work-in-progress, "Talihina" will debut at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month, and gives fans a glimpse into Kings' rise from God-fearing preacher's sons (and nephews) to platinum-plus arena rock icons ... a voyage that, of course, includes plenty of whiskey swiggin’, weed tokin’, vomiting, nudity and an awkward intra-band confrontation or 16. Obviously, we're excited.
And so, in honor of the (really pretty excellent) "Talihina" trailer — and the Foo Fighters' just-released "Back and Forth" doc, too — we decided to take a look back at some of the all-time best rock documentaries. Will the Kings join this list? We'll just have to wait and see.

On Nightingale, Erland And The Carnival succeed in integrating a variety of musical styles into a distinctly old-world vibe. But in the execution of an interesting concept, something falls a little short. Everything about Nightingale seems forced: the variety for variety’s sake (including stabs at folk, psychedelia, ambient, and garage-punk), the bizarre recording location (inside a ship moored on the Thames), and the blustery swagger. Erland’s take on prog-pop never feels as mischievous as The Dandy Warhols, or as blissfully carefree as Super Furry Animals. The group approaches its music with gusto, but only Erland And The Carnival ...

Most rock-centric documentaries fall into one of two camps: the hagiographical tributes to artists that frame and justify a performer's failings within the larger picture of his battles for success, and the warts-and-all examinations that tend to use the excesses of said performers as evidence of the inherent vapidity in the field. A good example of the former is pretty much any episode you ever saw of VH1's "Behind the Music," which today airs sporadic episodes profiling chart-toppers like 50 Cent but between 1997 and 2006 would spend 44 minutes running every conceivable artist through the same template of success-excess-redemption. For the producers of the series, drug abuse and infighting were an end in themselves. On the other side of the spectrum, you've got fascinating documentaries like Dig!, a riveting look at the egotistical brawling between the members of The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Dandy Warhols. The film is utterly engrossing, but...

The psychedelic rock band’s upcoming Ep includes a previously unreleased track “Elov”, a remix of “La Paloma” by the Dandy Warhols guitarist, Peter Holmstrom, the song, “Spiders,” which has been featured on the CW network’s “Nikita” and the title track off of Something Good. To kill sometime until the Ep release, check out the Portland native’s video for “Something Good,” which was inspired by the movies The Warriors and Velvet Goldmine. The groovy video also features the local DJ from Portland’s 94.7 FM, DJ Gustav. The Upsidedown will celebrate the release [...]...

At one time or another La's western psyche posse, Spindrift, has been associated with just about every big psyche band from Austin to San Fransisco. Early players included members of Psychic TV, The Brian Jonestown Massacre and The Warlocks. Founding singer-songwriter, Kirpatrick Thomas, has close ties with Dead Meadow, The Dandy Warhols, and has toured with more bad ass stoned-out groups with the word black in their name (The Black Angels, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Black Mountain...) than you can shake a tambourine at.
"Theme from Confusion Range" is the first of several forthcoming music videos, each shot by a different independent director, for Spindrift's next album "Classic Soundtracks Vol. 1." Thomas, who takes many of his sonic cues from Ennio Morricone said, "the album is an homage to our love of film scoring and the medium which surrounds it."

Back in 2004, Britney Spears dropped the third single from her third album In the Zone. To accompany the track (a ballad that may or may not be about the end of her relationship with Justin Timberlake), Spears hired David Lachapelle (who had made such classic clips as the Dandy Warhols' "Not If You Were the Last Junkie on Earth" and Mariah Carey's "Loverboy") to create a music video for it. Lachappelle crafted a dark, cinematic clip that expresses the sort of intense claustrophobia that Spears felt as a celebrity (paparazzi are everywhere in the video). On top of all that, Spears is faced with the apathy of a man played by actor Stephen Dorff (from films like "Blade," "Cecil B. Demented" and the recently released critical darling "Somewhere"), who recently sat down with MTV News' Josh Horowitz to break down the creation of "Everytime."

"Undeclared" is now airing on IFC, and we thought we'd take this opportunity to revisit the show that further cemented broadcast television's inability to recognize the genius of Judd Apatow. Every week, Matt Singer and Alison Willmore will be offering their thoughts on that night's episode.
Episode 1
"Prototype"
Written by Judd Apatow
Directed by Jake Kasdan
Episode 2
"Oh, So You Have a Boyfriend?"
Written by Kristofor Brown
Directed by Paul Feig
"When I'm lecturing, I expect you to listen. This is not high school." -- Professor Duggan
No, it's certainly not. And Judd Apatow's short-lived college series "Undeclared" wasn't his short-lived high-school series "Freaks and Geeks," either. It was made for a different network (Fox instead of NBC), a contemporary story instead of a period piece, and just a half-hour each week instead of "Freaks"'s full hour. Maybe most importantly, with that change of format came a change...

You might not be aware of it — especially if you live on the East Coast — but on Wednesday night (October 27), the 2010 World Series officially gets under way in San Francisco. It's a particularly intriguing matchup, pitting the pitching-heavy San Francisco Giants against the slugging Texas Rangers, and if you're a baseball purist (and who isn't?), well, then you're definitely in for a treat.
Still, it occurs to me that most of you couldn't care less about this year's Series, mostly because it does not involve either the New York Yankees and/or Philadelphia Phillies. Call me a traditionalist — or an embittered Red Sox/ Mets fan — but I think things are better off without either the Yanks or the...
