With "Saturday Night Live" featured player Paul Brittain departing earlier this season, there's a little room on the roster for some fresh meat. Now, a new report from Deadline says that comedian Kate McKinnon will fill Brittain's shoes as a new featured player starting with the April 7 episode, hosted by Sofia Vergara.
According to Deadline, McKinnon, along with Jessica Joy, Lauren Lapkus and Elaine Carroll, have all tested for "SNL" honcho Lorne Michaels in recent weeks, but McKinnon made the cut and will debut soon. NBC has not commented officially on the matter.
It makes sense that Michaels is looking to add more women to the cast, since both Kristen Wiig and Abby Elliott could leave the show at the end of the season.

Only four members of Saturday Night Live's thirteen-person cast are female, and two of those — Kristen Wiig and Abby Elliott — may not be much longer for the series, as each has been booking extracurricular projects (though Elliot just fell out of the Fox pilot she'd booked a starring role in). With that in mind, Deadline reports that Lorne Michaels has been auditioning new women for the sketch show, and Big Gay Sketch Show veteran Kate McKinnon will join the cast for the next new episode. Other comediennes who've been in the mix include Jessica Joy, Lauren Lapkus, and Elaine Carroll, and yes, the latter is from your favorite web series Very Mary-Kate, and yes again, Michaels still seems unable to find a single funny black woman. Maya Rudolph guest appearances only go so far, guys.

Exclusive: With the future of its biggest female star, Kristen Wiig, up in the air, NBC’s Saturday Night Live is moving to add reinforcements. I hear that in the past several weeks, seven comedy performers tested for SNL honcho Lorne Michaels, including the following four ladies: Kate McKinnon (The Big Gay Sketch Show), Jessica Joy (The Playboy Club), Lauren Lapkus (Are You There Chelsea) and Elaine Carroll (Very Mary-Kate). I hear one of them, Ucb’s McKinnon, will make her debut on SNL‘s next show next Saturday hosted by Sofia Vergara. It is unclear if Michaels would try out more new performers this season in preparation for locking in the cast of NBC’s late-night sketch comedy series for next season. As for Bridesmaids star Wiig, whose contract is up at the end of the season, a final decision about her future on SNL is expected in the summer.
