There’s a lot of love going around here as they discuss the new espionage comedy which also stars X-Files’ Gillian Anderson and Hasan Minhaj. Tom Cruise is the clear winner at North American multiplexes this weekend with "Mission: Impossible — Fallout,” heading for a solid $35 million second weekend, estimates showed Saturday.

Girl Talk is a weekly look at women in film — past, present, and future.
Midway through the first act of Susanna Fogel’s “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” best friends-turned-accidental-spies Audrey (Mila Kunis) and Morgan (Kate McKinnon) have already endured a kidnapping, an attack in their own home, and a bonkers shootout in a classy European cafe. Audrey and Morgan, who don’t seem to be trained in much of anything (let alone spycraft), don’t become suddenly handy with a gun or trained in martial arts: They shuffle out of the cafe hiding behind a hardshell suitcase, and then they run.
While action comedies like “Private Benjamin” and “Spy” hinge on seemingly inept women rising to the challenge presented by wild situations that require actual military precision, the current crop of a female action movies often rely on heroines who are almost too perfect in their butt-kicking abilities. “Atomic Blonde,...

Chicago – It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a film completely stolen by a supporting character, but Kate McKinnon in “The Spy Who Dumped Me” managed to do just that… which was fortunate because the “spy” part of the story is a seen-it-before kill and gun fest that felt like the first draft of a James Bond knock-off.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
But McKinnon provides the comic relief, and reels off a series of what sounded like improvisation lines that sort of makes fun of the spy part while oddly participating in it. There are 28 (plus/minus factor of five) quality kills in this film, from the dependable neck twist to a henchman being run over by a bus to the old reliable head shot with a gun. It was not only out of place in what could have been a funnier buddy comedy, but it was boring to boot.

While many writer-directors fill their movies with autobiographical elements, Susanna Fogel says the main premise of “The Spy Who Dumped Me” is pure fiction. “I would love to tell you that I had an amazing spy adventure full of car chases and intrigue, but that’s not what happened,” she says with a laugh.
Fogel co-wrote the action-comedy with David Iserson and it hits theaters Thursday with Mila Kunis playing Audrey, the titular dumpee, and Kate McKinnon as her best friend, Morgan. After Audrey learns her ex was a CIA agent, she and Morgan are pulled into a series of international escapades that involve another government agent (“Outlander” star Sam Heughan), high-octane adventure, and frantic calls from her parents (Jane Curtin and Paul Reiser) who are more concerned about how to work the TV remote.

Never, ever underestimate Kate McKinnon. Flying on the fumes of her own damn-near-infallible notion of what’s funny, the Emmy winning SNL veteran is a joy to watch. Her new movie, The Spy Who Dumped Me, is not. Though McKinnon is one half of a saucy buddy act with costar Mila Kunis — with the Family Guy star playing it straight with no loss of appeal — the script that director Susanna Fogel (Life Partners) wrote with David Iserson basically leaves its two stars flailing. Melissa McCarthy fared much better with this...

One of the best moments in “The Spy Who Dumped Me,” an uneven but often funny action-comedy, gets at the essence of its feminist satire: Kate McKinnon is tied up, bloodied, and completely at the mercy of her cold-blooded captor. But instead of crying for help, she retorts, “Please go fuck yourself,” setting all the signifiers of a damsel in distress ablaze. After stealing the show time and again in supporting roles during her off-seasons from “Saturday Night Live,” McKinnon finally scores a lead in “Spy” that foregrounds her brilliant capacity to tear apart familiar faces and tropes with constant glee, and she outpaces this discardable entertainment every step of the way.
McKinnon’s near-subversive feistiness usually outpaces whatever comedic vehicle she lands in — “Ghostbusters” would have been saved if she’d taken center stage — almost to the point where filmmakers seem coy about giving her too much space. In “The Spy Who Dumped Me,...

Spycraft was a dominant theme on the red carpet for Wednesday night’s world premiere of Lionsgate’s comedy “The Spy Who Dumped Me.”
Stars Mila Kunis and Kate McKinnon offered starkly contrasting views as to whether they could carry out real-life spying.
“I say no because I can’t lie,” McKinnon said at the Regency Village in Westwood, Los Angeles. “I just can’t. So I would immediately out myself to everyone I spoke to, and I would break down crying in a bathroom somewhere.”
Kunis, on the other hand, said she would be a good secret agent. “I’m petite, so I can squish my way through iron bars. I can speak three languages. Those are my skills. I like to send that image out.”
Kunis also analyzed McKinnon’s laugh. “There’s two laughs that Kate has — one that’s genuine and one that’s not so genuine.

Here is the official trailer for The Spy Who Dumped Me, in which Audrey (Mila Kunis) and her best bud Morgan (Kate McKinnon) dive headlong into international intrigue. Rather than, say, slamming the apartment door on said ex (Justin Theroux) — who says, “Some bad people are after me; now they’re after you” — they leap into action and soon find themselves on the run from the assassins in Europe and a suspiciously charming British agent (Sam Heughan) as they hatch a plan to save the world and shoot and kill people for laughs.

Lionsgate is developing a new spy comedy called The Spy Who Dumped, and they are in talks with Kate McKinnon (Ghostbusters) and Mila Kunis (Black Swan) to star in the film. It seems like a solid comedic match up that would make sense.
The story follows two best friends, played by McKinnon and Kunis, “who unwittingly become entangled in an international conspiracy when one of the women discovers the boyfriend who dumped her was actually a spy.”
It definitely seems like a chick flick kind of comedy, so I’m sure my wife will want to watch it. I enjoy McKinnon's style of comedy, and Kunis has done some decent comedy work in the past. She most recently starred in Bad Moms, which was a lot better than I thought it'd be. I'm always up for a funny comedy, so hopefully this one delievers some laughs!

The Writers Guild of America has just announced the nominations for their annual awards for Best Screenplays (by writers who are guild signatories). That’s right, before you get nervous thinking that your favorite may have been left off the list, you must remember that the WGA is the group that is not all-inclusive and leaves out several of the top contenders each year due to them not being part of the guild or not following their very specific rules. For this reason, you won’t see Inside Out, The Hateful Eight, and Ex Machina in the Original Screenplay category or Room, Brooklyn, or Anomalisa in the Adapted screenplay category.
Taking a look at what’s left over for the nominations, we find many that were expected to make a showing, including Spotlight and Bridge of Spies for Original Screenplay, though they apparently had to sink to really low depths...

The Writers Guild of America announced the TV nominees for the 2015 WGA Awards on Thursday (December 4) morning and several new shows broke into the fields in a big way. And, of course, there were a number of big WGA Award nomination head-scratchers. Specifically, where the heck was FX's "Fargo"? The answer is below. Making perhaps the biggest splash was "Transparent," which earned three nominations and, since "Orange Is The New Black" earned two nods and "House of Cards" pick up one, that meant that Amazon Prime and Netflix are, at least for one award-giving organization, on equal footing as creators of original programming. The Jill Soloway-created "Transparent" is nominated for New Series, where it will go against "The Affair," "The Knick," "Silicon Valley" and "True Detective." "Transparent" and "Silicon Valley" are also up for Comedy Series, going against "Louie," "Veep" and "Orange Is The New Black." Lest you panic...

Mad Men, Season 7: Episode 5 – “The Runaways”
Written by David Iserson & Matthew Weiner
Directed by Christopher Manley
Airs Sunday nights at 10 on AMC
It’s hard to get a handle on what Matthew Weiner wants us to think about regarding Ginsberg’s storyline in this most recent episode of Mad Men. The way Peggy looks at the Ibm computer after Michael has been hauled off, presumably to a mental institution, is a combination of contempt and bemusement. I don’t believe we’re supposed to assume Peggy dislikes the technology for apparently making Ginsberg go crazy, but the shot lingers on her facial expression long enough to suggest that the transition into a more modern age is something that several of these characters embrace with a large dose of skepticism.
The Ginsberg storyline isn’t the only one in “The Runaways” that feels odd. The whole episode functions almost like a collection of vignettes,...

What's the counterculture, and what's the Establishment? As Mad Men glides into the '70s (Bloody Nipple In A Box), it gets harder to tell. Written by David Iserson and Matthew Weiner and directed by Christopher Manley, "The Runaways" feels like kin to season seven's "The Crash" and the counterculture-commentary-heavy "A Tale of Two Cities," and it has a mostly light, comic vibe, punctuated by moments of melancholy and (Bloody Nipple Hacked Off). Sorry. Let's take a second and collect ourselves before we (Bloody Nipple. Lawnmower Foot. Bayonet. Chest. Nipple. Bloody). Anyway ...Mad Men has been praised as a rare must-see cable drama that avoids genre hooks — horror, sci-fi, criminals — and it is that. But it's also a drama from one of the key writer-producers on The Sopranos, and it shares the latter's penchant for out-of-nowhere perversity, some of it unsettling. Exhibit A is Ginsberg's spiral into madness this week,...

The final season of "Mad Men" is adding an Oscar winner to its writing staff.
"Chinatown" screenwriter Robert Towne has joined the AMC series as a consulting producer on its seventh and final season, Variety reports. The series has also hired Patricia Resnick ("Nine to Five") as a consulting producer. "Saturday Night Live" and "United States of Tara" veteran David Iserson will be a co-producer.
Additionally, Carly Wray has made the jump from writers' assistant to staff writer for the final season.
Towne wrote a handful of TV scripts very early in his career, including episodes of "The Outer Limits" and "The Man from U.N.C.L.E." His last TV work, however, was nearly 50 years ago. In addition to his Oscar win for "Chinatown," he was nominated for Academy Awards for his screenplays for "The Last Detail," "Shampoo" and "Greystoke."

New Girl, Season 2, Episode 16: “Table 34”
Written by David Iserson
Directed by Tristram Shapeero
Airs on Tuesdays at 9pm on Fox
With the audience keen to see the aftermath of the kiss we’ve all been waiting for, the gang attends an Indian marriage convention in New Girl’s most anticipated episode of the season.
Following up events from last week’s episode, “Table 34” provides the audience with more enjoyable, uncomfortable moments that are full of regret from both Jess and Nick. Placing the awkward morning after action at the same Indian marriage convention attended by other characters, the pair is forced to interact.
In a series of entertaining convention activities including speed dating and newspaper table building, Nick and Jess are competing with each other, trying to prove the kiss meant nothing to either one of them. This feels like a weak aftermath for fans that are longing for the pair to shack up,...

Alex Timbers is in final negotiations to make his feature directorial debut on "Heck" at MGM says Variety.
An adaptation of the bestselling children's book series by Dale E. Basye, the story follows a boy and his older sister who die in a freak accident and are sent to Heck, a reform school for kids in the afterlife where teachers include Richard Nixon and Lizzie Borden.
The duo plan to escape with the help of a map-wielding friend. Heavily inspired by "Dante's Inferno", it's the first entry in a multi-book series so the company is no doubt eyeing franchise potential.
"Saturday Night Live" scribe David Iserson penned the original draft which Chris Weitz is re-writing. Karen Rosenfelt is producing.
Timbers is a Tony-nominated writer/director and creator of acclaimed rock musical "Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson". He's also helming "Rocky: The Musical" which premieres in Europe later this year.

['United States of Tara' - 'The Road to Hell is Paved with Breast Intentions']
We're at the halfway point of Season 3, and 'United States of Tara' is gleefully picking up momentum as we roll into the latter half of the year, a fact reflected in the fleet-footed script courtesy of David Iserson.
Tara's ongoing therapy sessions with a skeptical Dr. Hattaras lent plenty of levity to the proceedings ("when the kittens eat the bacon, this bit will come over and stroke its back, and they will live forever!") while the return of Tara's mom offered a new source of conflict, culminating in an ominous final scene that will doubtless stay with us all until next week's episode.
