In 2017, following eight losses throughout the preceding decade, Ryan Murphy finally achieved his first competitive PGA Award win for producing the first iteration of “American Crime Story,” aka “The People v. O.J. Simpson.” Two years later, his work on the show’s second season – “The Assassination of Gianni Versace” – led to him becoming one of the inaugural honorees in the Best Limited Series PGA category (which was established to separate such programs from TV movies). Now, according to Gold Derby’s odds, he is heavily favored to triumph there again as the producer of Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.”
70% of the Gold Derby users who have made predictions for this particular race are anticipating a “Monster” victory. Nearly all of the remaining top choice votes have been thrown toward “The Dropout,” with “Pam and Tommy,” “Obi-Wan Kenobi” and “Inventing Anna” all receiving relatively little support. There’s a genre I like so much I can never get enough of it — I call it the Biopic About Someone You Wouldn’t Make a Biopic About. The form came into existence, in a certain way, with “Sid and Nancy,” but it was all but patented by the screenwriters Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, who planted it on the map, in 1994, with “Ed Wood” (still the “Citizen Kane” of the genre), then went on to script “The People vs. Larry Flynt,” “Man on the Moon” (about Andy Kaufman), “Big Eyes”, and “Dolemite Is My Name” (about the fluky hustler-comedian Ray Moore). There have been films in the genre from other quarters, like Paul Schrader’s superb “Auto Focus” (about the TV star Bob Crane and his video-fetish sex life), going right up through the recent Toronto Film Festival sensation “Weird: The Al Yankovic Story.”
But there’s one...

"To me, she was a mystery!" Lies and deceit and dark pasts aplenty. Lionsgate has debuted one final trailer for the third film in the Intrigo Anthology, a series of mystery thrillers adapted from novels by Håkan Nesser. This final one is called Intrigo: Samaria, following up Intrigo: Death of an Author and Intrigo: Dear Agnes previously. Years after the murder of Vera, her friend from college, Paula is driven to make a documentary about the case and asks a professor to help. But as the two draw closer to the shocking truth behind the slaying, Paula's deceitful ways and Henry's dark past explode into a dangerous, heart-stopping confrontation. Sounds scary? Starring Phoebe Fox as Paula, with Millie Brady, Andrew Buchan, Jeff Fahey, Luka Peros, Scott Alexander Young, and Jack Brett Anderson. Even though in text this film may not sound that interesting, this is quite an enticing trailer with heaps of twists and turns.
