As far as creature features go, Animal is about as generically crafted as they come, but that might be serviceable enough for some of you (no judgement!). A group of hikers venture into a heavily wooded area and get caught stumbling around after sundown, some type of murderous creature pursues on foot, and a playful excursion turns into a fight for survival. People die, blood is spilled, and a monster roams free – but Chiller’s animalistic horror movie doesn’t do a darn thing to differentiate itself. Instead of finding myself cringing in fear at the very sight of these monsters, my first thought was “Oh look, they copied the Feast monsters!” I’ll admit, Animal is quick and relatively painless, but with a presence so duplicative, is all the running, screaming, and dying actually worthwhile?

This is the first teaser trailer to the Drew Barrymore produced horror thriller Animal. It basically looks like every other horror film that takes place in the woods. The trailer features a group of friends running through the forest being chased by an unseen creature. No offense, but something like this can be shot by an amateur filmmaker. The trailer gives me nothing to spark my interest or excitement. It's a something we've seen a thousand times before.

Chicago – In November of 2013, the 31st annual Chicago Lgbt International Film Festival, also known as “Reeling31,” provided a week long showcase for gay filmmakers. There were many new voices in the mix, and they were on the Red Carpet on opening night of the Fest.

The stars of the opening night feature film. “G.B.F,” were there for interviews and photos, plus filmmakers and actors from the films “Burning Blue,” “The Happy Sad’ and “Truth” – which were shown throughout the week – also walked the fabled Red Carpet.
The “Reeling” Festival is currently sponsoring a free film series in Chicago, the fourth annual “Cinema Q.” The last week of the series will present “De-Lovely” (2004) – starring Kevin Kline as Cole Porter – on March 26th, 6:30pm, at Chicago’s Cultural Center, 78 East Washington Street.

Darren Stein’s sparkling comedy G.B.F. is one of those typical American high-school set productions where every character looks like they’re more likely to be picking up their own children from school, rather than actually study there. Nonetheless, this merely sets the precedence for a picture that requires a suspension of disbelief in order to enjoy, in what is a glitzy and ultimately superficial affair – though that’s not to say it’s not rather good fun.
Michael J. Willet plays Tanner, a young, gay student reluctant to come out of the closet, in spite of his best friend Brent’s (Paul Iacono) best efforts to persuade him otherwise. In a rare lapse of concentration, Tanner is accidentally outed, and though expecting a backlash of sorts, instead he becomes one of the most popular guys in school, as the coolest girls, consisting of the likes of Caprice (Xosha Roquemore...

Easy Peasy: Stein Returns to High School Hallways for Sweet Hearted Message Movie
Five years before Mean Girls brought the monstrous high heeled bitch posse back to the forefront of PG-13 blockbuster entertainment, director Darren Stein’s 1999 film Jawbreaker explored the morbid universe of a trio of black hearted murderous maidens in the delightful R tradition of Heathers. In his first feature since then, Stein goes back to the hallways of high school with G.B.F., once again revisiting the formula of the popular female triumvirate, only this time aligning himself with the spirit of John Hughes. Many aspects of high school life may seemingly never change, but Stein’s latest rendering, while extolling a message that seems deliriously obvious to the adult world, cheerfully proposes that even this rigid, socially conditioned environment has had opportunity to grapple with progressive notions of equality.

Ahead of its theatrical release, G.B.F. has shared an exclusive clip with VH1. The movie tells the story of two closeted best friends Tanner, (Michael J. Willett, United States Of Tara) and Brent (Paul Iacono,The Hard Times Of R.J. Berger). While Brent longs for popularity, it’s Tanner who catches the school’s attention when he is accidentally outed. Soon the three most popular girls in school fight to land Tanner as their gay best friend. In the clip above, Tanner unites the queen bees (Sasha Pieterse, Pretty Little Liars; Xosha Roquemore, Precious; and Andrea Bowen, Desperate Housewives) in a “reveal” that recalls the iconic entrance from Jawbreaker.

G.B.F., a cunning new comedy from Jawbreaker director Darren Stein, is a minor high-school flick, but also an inherently modern one. It is bolstered by a refreshing premise and a sharp cast who overcome some of the absurdity and clutter in George Northy’s debut script. The acronym of the title stands for “gay best friend,” which leads the viewer to expect a depiction of contemporary high-school drama that could be too hip or condescending. As it turns out though, G.B.F. is neither, instead, it’s merely happy to embrace its gay-positive values and is just smart enough to make us laugh at some of the stereotypes it skewers.
The film’s plot, if anything, depends on the trendsetters. As gay protagonist Tanner (Michael J. Willett) tells the audience, there is something about being first in high school. It turns out that Tanner’s first is, to him, an embarrassing...

Gay high school fantasia G.B.F. starts the way every teen movie should: with the image of a panda puking up a rainbow.
Sure, it’s a snappy, meme-y graphic that speaks directly to the film’s target audience (hip, animal-video-obsessed, neon-emblazed Top Shop addicts) but it also stands as a great metaphor for the film’s message: sometimes being a mascot – for a cause, a school, or a line of breakfast cereals – can be enough to make you vomit Roy G. Biv. Darren Stein‘s G.B.F. is a comedy for everyone who has ever felt that the Pride flag they’ve been waving happily in the wind has just wrapped itself around their throat and is starting to cut off the air supply.

Through its first season, the CW's Sex and the City prequel The Carrie Diaries stuck true to its name, keeping its focus on AnnaSophia Robb's teenage Carrie Bradshaw and her pre-Sarah Jessica Parker adventures in the go-go world of 1980s NYC. This season, though, the show began exploring the wider Satc universe, bringing in Lindsey Gort to play a young (but hardly innocent) version of Kim Cattrall's Samantha Jones.

Tanner (Michael J. Willett) is the Gbf everyone wants (including Sasha Pieterse)
In the fine tradition of teen comedies like Clueless, Pretty In Pink, Mean Girls and even darker films like the original Carrie, comes the new film, G.B.F., which fabulously dives into the world of the Gay Best Friend. Directed by Darren Stein (Jawbreaker) from a script by George Northy, the film follows high schooler Tanner (Michael J. Willett) as he navigates the treacherous waters of high school after coming out.
In the world of G.B.F., there’s less opposition to Tanner being gay than the comedy found in how people want to be close to the cute gay guy. The popular girls compete for Tanner’s friendship, even helping him with a makeover; at least one closeted guy (the Bf of one of the girls) makes a pass at him and, at the end of the day, he...

Reflecting on the theme of struggling to fit in from his last feature film, the dark high school comedy Jawbreakers, director Darren Stein once again explored the heightened adolescent need to be accepted in his new movie, G.B.F. The contemporary teen comedy had its world premiere during the Tribeca Film Festival on April 19 at New York City’s Clearview Cinemas Chelsea. The filmmaker and several of G.B.F.‘s stars attended the red carpet before the screening to discuss the process of filming the comedy.
G.B.F. tells the story of two closeted best friends, Tanner (Michael J. Willett) and Brent (Paul Iacono), as they try to navigate high school. Brent longs to be the G.B.F, or gay best friend, of the popular girls in school, so that he can finally have the spotlight. Tanner, meanwhile, would rather make it to graduation without ever being noticed.

In suburban high schools, the G.B.F. (or Gay Best Friend, for those not up on the vernacular) is the hot new thing. The only problem for the students in G.B.F.? There are no gay students at the school—at least not openly gay. But Brent Van Camp (Paul Iacono) plans to change all that by coming out and using the most popular girls in school to launch him to the top as Prom King. What ensues is a pop culture-infused meta comedy with Game of Thrones manipulation.

If director Darren Stein and actor Paul Iacono have their way, their new movie “G.B.F.” will usher in a more subversive film genre in the vein of “Clueless” and “Mean Girls,” but with a gay twist.
Premiering April 19 at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York, “G.B.F.” tells the story of closeted teens Tanner (played by “United States of Tara” alum Michael J. Willett) and Brent (Iacono). In an effort to make himself a hip “social accessory” among a revered girls' clique at his high school, the sassy Brent hatches a plan to come out of the closet in a very big way. His efforts go hilariously awry, however, when the more introverted Tanner is accidentally outed first and ends up as the school’s most popular student in the weeks leading up to the senior prom.

I mean, you had me at Pretty Little Liars star Sasha Pieterse, but then you went and added Awkward.'s Molly Tarlov, Hard Times of Rj Berger's Paul Iacono and Will & Grace's Megan Mullally and I've already seen this flick three times in 3D. Vulture has a fun set visit to G.B.F. (Gay Best Friend) which stars Megan Mullally as the extremely gay positive mother to The Hard Times of R.J. Berger's out Paul Iacono. The plot is about a gay student played by Michael J. Willett who comes out at high school and is instantly the must-have accessory for all the girls, while the flamboyant-but-closeted friend played by Iacono stews, despite having a mother (Mullally) so gay positive she rents Brokeback Mountain and liveblogs it to him. "Get in that tent with Jake!" Megan Mullally chirps at Heath Ledger. "It's cold out there. Snuggle for warmth." Done up in magenta hair and horn-rimmed glasses, Mullally is on the set of the new indie comedy G.B.F. (that's short for "Gay Best Friend"), and her character is attempting to bond with her gay son in the most mortifying way possible: She's rented Brokeback Mountain, and she's loudly live-blogging the movie's famous sex scene while her son (played by The Hard Times of R.J. Berger's Paul Iacono) cringes next to her on the couch. "Not a lot of foreplay," she notes. "It looks a lot like grappling, but that's a cowboy kiss. In a lot of ways, the scene is vintage Mullally — her patter is upbeat, inappropriate, and heavily...

As you may have heard by now, Paul Iacono of The Hard Times of Rj Berger will be playing a gay character in an upcoming MTV show, and he's taken the opportunity to come out of the closet himself. Says Iacono, "I am attracted to girls, I'm just attracted to guys much more."
Iacono's new show, now in development, has been described as Will and Grace for a younger crowd, an analogy which may or may not interest you depending on how you feel about Will and Grace. Iacono plays Cole, a college student who reevaluates his sexuality after moving to New York with his girlfriend Kenzie. Judging from the title, it seems likely that Kenzie will be a focal point of the series, but it also seems like the show is designed to explore an entire spectrum of sexuality: gay, straight, and everything in between.
