Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss Sunday’s BAFTA Awards, where two films are expected to win big.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Or should I say, ‘ello guv’nor? We’re back here to type about this weekend’s BAFTA Awards, where we both expect “Oppenheimer” to dominate. As we discussed with our voices this week (no English accents required), I have Christopher Nolan’s awards juggernaut winning 10 honors — including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr. and — my most galaxy brain pick — Best Supporting Actress for Emily Blunt. Will “Oppenheimer” dominate the BAFTAs? Will “Poor Things” be enriched with wins? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here with their BAFTA winner predictions before Sunday’s ceremony.
Just like at the Oscars, “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” are the nomination leaders at BAFTA — with the same amount too, 13 and 11, respectively. Both are forecasted to have a great night across the pond, with “Oppenheimer” expected to grab Best Picture, Best Director for Christopher Nolan, Best Actor for Cillian Murphy, Best Supporting Actor for Robert Downey Jr., along with a handful of below-the-line categories. Meanwhile, “Poor Things” is the odds-on favorite in Best Actress for Emma Stone, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Costume Design and Best Production Design and Best British Film. But could it add one or two more for Best Makeup and Hair or Best Visual Effects, the latter of which it missed at the Oscars?...

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! Welcome, one and all, to our first official chat of Phase 2. I don’t know how about you, but I thought it was so encouraging to see everyone react in such a calm and normal fashion to this week’s Oscar nominations — particularly after last year’s Oscar nominations were so fraught with discourse, outrage and controversy. Barbenheimer ruled 2023, but it had a mixed outcome on Oscar nominations morning. Watch Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here break down all the snubs and surprises.
As expected, “Oppenheimer” topped Tuesday’s nominations with 13 bids, including Best Picture and Best Director for Christopher Nolan. “Barbie” scored eight nominations but missed out on some key categories as Greta Gerwig was snubbed in Best Director and Margot Robbie was Awol in Best Actress. Meanwhile, not only did Ryan Gosling snag a Best Supporting Actor nomination, as forecasted, but America Ferrera secured a slot in the crazy Best Supporting Actress field. How did Gerwig and Barbie herself both miss? We explain why their snubs were not entirely shocking.

It’s a Barbie world — at least at the Critics Choice Awards. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to break down the 29th Critics Choice Awards nominations.
Two days after nabbing nine Golden Globe nominations, “Barbie” doubled that haul with 18 Critics Choice bids on Wednesday, including Best Picture, Best Director for Greta Gerwig and three regular acting bids for Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera, the last of whom missed a Globe nomination. Is “Barbie” the one to beat at Critics Choice and the Oscars? “Oppenheimer” and “Poor Things” were close behind at 13 apiece, while “Killers of the Flower Moon” scored 12.
See Experts slugfest: Barbenheimer dominates Golden Globe nominations, but where’s ‘The Color Purple’?
Even with six slots in every category except Best Picture — Best Director returned to six nominees after expanding to 10 last year — there were, of course, lots of notable snubs.

With its nine bids, “Succession” broke the record shared by “The Thorn Birds” (1984) and “L.A Law” (1990) for the most Golden Globe nominations by a show in a single year. The HBO hit, which earned 27 Emmy bids for its fourth and final season, was nominated in every category in which it was eligible, most notably getting in all three of its lead actors — Brian Cox, Kieran Culkin and Jeremy Strong — into the Best TV Drama Actor category, just like it did at the Emmys. The Golden Globes are back — on CBS and Paramount+ — and bigger than ever, now with six slots per category. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to share their Globe predictions for film and TV ahead of Monday’s nominations announcement.
In film, we have a lot of the usual Oscar suspects, including “Oppenheimer,” Killers of the Flower Moon,” “The Holdovers” and “Poor Things.” Thanks to “May December’s” entering in comedy, the entire Best Actress Oscar top 10 in the odds could score Globe nominations, but one of us is going out on a limb for a long shot. And which top contender did we both leave out of the Globes’ single screenplay category?
See Experts slugfest: Did Charles Melton get an Oscar boost after his Gotham Awards win?
Over on the TV side, things could be pure chaos. Since the Emmys have been postponed until Jan.

But reminder that every category is voted on by a different jury of five, so not exactly a wide swath of people. But winning never hurts.

Ok, that’s an overstatement, but it’s funnier than one might expect and based off of the action-packed trailers. The film’s crafts speak for itself, but will “Napoleon” be able to break in anywhere above the line?

Reel Works has revealed the full lineup for its 2023 film festival, which celebrates the work of young, emerging filmmakers.
Taking place Nov. 18-19 at New York’s Sva Theater, this year’s festival will feature 42 narrative and doc projects, with over 85 percent of films presented from Bipoc and or LGBTQ+ filmmakers.
The festival’s second annual iteration will once again consist of projects from filmmakers ages 14 to 24 in the Reel Works community. That includes original projects produced through the nonprofit’s Documentary and Narrative Lab programming, alongside the premiere of movies from the inaugural Supported Summer Lab, a workshop that supports neurodivergent teens in developing their own original films.
The event will also mark the first time the Reel Works Film Festival features the work of external creatives with screenings of selected titles.

Welcome to Oscar Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Oscar race — via Slack, of course. This week, we discuss the loaded Best Director category.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and there’s a new Martin Scorsese picture in theaters, so what better time than now for us to type about the packed 2024 Oscars Best Director race? Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: As with other categories, this year’s Best Director race runs so deep that I could make a compelling case for 14 or 15 top contenders. But despite strong work from newcomers like Celine Song and Cord Jefferson and veterans like David Fincher and Todd Haynes, it feels like there is a relatively firm consensus forming around five names. Scorsese, of course, the greatest of all time — beloved by Film Twitter and industry pros alike.

The time has come. “Killers of the Flower Moon” is finally hitting theaters this weekend. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Martin Scorsese‘s long-awaited epic and more.
The drama was once atop the Best Picture Oscar odds, but has sat in second place since “Oppenheimer” exploded over the summer. Now that it’ll be widely seen, will it retake the top spot? With the ongoing actors’ strike, Scorsese has shouldered basically the entire promotional/Oscar campaign. What kind of impact will this have? Plus, we discuss Osage language consultant Christopher Cote‘s recent comments about the film.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday, and we’re Kenough? One week after typing about the truly unhinged race for Best Supporting Actress, we’re back to put some words on the page about Best Supporting Actor. Fortunately, this category feels a little more firmed up — with four actors heavily predicted by experts, pundits, and regular folks. It starts with Robert Downey Jr. for “Oppenheimer,” the favorite here, and with good reason. He’s a huge star whom everyone loves and he’s in the biggest movie that’s the Best Picture frontrunner and his performance is amazing. That doesn’t mean Downey will win, but as we talked...

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! I’ve had this Leonard Bernstein quote stuck in my head since we saw “Maestro” on Monday night: “A work of art does not answer questions, it provokes them; and, its essential meaning is in the tension between the contradictory answers.” I bring it up because it feels somewhat appropriate, not just for the content of “Maestro” but the state of this year’s Best Supporting Actress race. A few weeks ago, this race wasn’t particularly opaque. But now that “Killers of the Flower Moon” star Lily Gladstone has decided to campaign for Best Actress, it’s chaos magic. “The Holdovers” star Da’Vine Joy Randolph...

Will “Maestro” hit a high note at the Oscars? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss Bradley Cooper‘s second directorial effort and more.
After debuting at the Venice Film Festival last month, “Maestro” made its stateside premiere Monday at the New York Film Festival, where it got another wave of positive reactions. So will the Netflix film, which chronicles Leonard Bernstein (Cooper) and Felicia Montealegre‘s (Carey Mulligan) marriage, be the one to bring Cooper Oscar gold? One of us promptly moved the nine-time nominee up to first place in Best Actor, but what about Best Director?

After last year’s – shall we say – undercooked crop of contenders, this year’s list of possibilities for lead actor runs relatively deep. Out front for now is Cillian Murphy for “Oppenheimer” — we both have him in first, mostly as a default but also, to me, he would be quite a deserving winner. This year, Lily Gladstone will place herself among the year’s Best Actress contenders for “Killers of the Flower Moon.” It’s a decision we discussed this week already, and it makes sense — particularly to those who paid close attention to the...

Before the news, Gladstone was the frontrunner to win the supporting trophy. Gladstone plays Mollie Burkhart, an Osage member who marries Leonardo DiCaprio‘s Ernest Burkhart, and has received glowing reviews for her performance since the film premiered at the Cannes Film Festival in May. Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! We’re back to type about the laughs, which is great because there’s so much drama to this year’s comedy categories. Neither of us was very surprised the TV academy stayed loyal to “Ted Lasso” despite the somewhat rocky reception to its third (and final?) season. By sheer numbers, “Ted Lasso” Season 3 is a stronger nominee than “Ted Lasso” Season 2 — and that the third season scored two editing nominations seemingly speaks to the academy’s undying devotion to the two-time series winner. It would take a lot for me to move it out of my top spot — not that it’s without competition, particularly from “The Bear.

Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s the first Friday of the 2024 Emmys eligibility period and we’re still rightly typing about 2023. This week, in the afterglow of the “Succession” series finale, another Emmy-winning juggernaut ended — or did it? “Ted Lasso” wrapped up its third season on Wednesday with an episode that could easily be considered the show’s series finale or could just be the end of Ted Lasso himself. Either way, the 76-minute episode was one of the better installments in the divisive Season 3 and gave Coach Lasso and Jason Sudeikis a proper sendoff. To be fair, almost nothing that happened in the...

The more things change, the more they stay the same. Actually, most things stayed the same this week as submissions were due on Tuesday. There was one big change: “Mrs. Davis,” previously in drama, is now in limited. Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the Peacock series’ switch and all the other non-switches.
Just like “Beef,” “Mrs. Davis” is shifting to the softer limited field. It’s not a necessarily fraudulent move as the show, which drops its finale on May 18, wraps up its season-long story and doesn’t need to return for second season (nor has it been renewed). But does that mean it’ll have an easier path to nominations? Only one of us added it in limited categories.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, we appraise Sarah Snook‘s prospects in the Best Drama Actress race.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! What a week for the Roys. Just hours after we discussed Kieran Culkin shifting over from Best Drama Supporting Actor to Best Drama Actor for his incredible performance on the final season of “Succession,” Sarah Snook decided to return to the Best Drama Actress race for the first time since Season 1. Snook’s decision — which trickled out via unnamed sources across the trade sites on Wednesday evening with the appearance of a shared break — is one we’ve speculated about since before the season even started and makes a whole lot of sense. Not only has Snook delivered as Shiv Roy throughout the final...

Will the Best Actor Emmy come down to a battle between the Ce-Bros? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the first big “Succession” category move and what that means.
After two nominations in supporting, Kieran Culkin will submit in lead this year for the fourth and final season of the drama series frontrunner. The placement is not wrong — Roman (Culkin), Kendall (Jeremy Strong) and Shiv (Sarah Snook) have very much been the leads this season, especially in the wake of Logan’s (Brian Cox) death. But the conventional thinking was that Culkin’s material thus far has made him a shoo-in for the supporting trophy, and now it’ll be harder for him to win in lead, especially opposite former champ Strong. But will it be? We discuss why you shouldn’t count slime puppy out.

Welcome to Emmy Experts Typing, a weekly column in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Joyce Eng and Christopher Rosen discuss the Emmy race — via Slack, of course. This week, as viewers consume Netflix’s “Beef,” we we go over the comedy races.
Christopher Rosen: Hello, Joyce! It’s Friday and I’m happy to ask and answer our first question: Where’s the “Beef”? On Netflix! This week, the streaming giant of a thousand shows and movies launched one of its better efforts in a bit: “Beef,” a dark comedy that’s not really funny but also funnier than many ostensible comedy shows — something we tried to inventory this week already with our voices. We’re both fans of this one, a character study of two broken people that feels like an episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm” but make it “Weeds”? Whatever the comps, “Beef” feels like it could...

Netflix is serving up its latest comedy contender Thursday with the release of “Beef.” Will it cook up Emmy nominations though? Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng are here to discuss the show’s Emmy prospects, “Poker Face’s” embarrassment of riches in the guest races and more.
“Beef” stars Steven Yeun and Ali Wong as two strangers who almost collide in a road rage incident and then figuratively collide in each other’s lives because neither can let it go. The dramedy, which as gotten stellar reviews, takes some big swings toward the end of the season as well, and at the moment, it’s in 14th place in the Best Comedy Series odds. Yeun has the best odds, sitting in eighth place in comedy actor, while Wong is in 11th in actress. Expect that to rise as everyone consumes “Beef,” but will any of them make it in?...

It’ll have been less than a month since the 95th Academy Awards when Ben Affleck’s “Air” hits theaters, but strong reviews suggest the time to begin predicting next year’s Oscars is already here.
Matt Damon heads the ‘80s-set workplace dramedy’s stellar ensemble as Sonny Vaccaro, a maverick talent scout for an apparel company that once celebrated unconventional thinking but, after going public, has increasingly frozen him out, focusing more on balance sheets than upending the status quo. Basketball players, Sonny is told over and over again, would much rather wear Converse and Adidas than Nike. Why doesn’t the company, based in Beaverton, Or, have offices on the east coast? What’s the use in a shoe that’s only good for a single activity? You can wear a running shoe for anything, even a trip to the grocery store. And what the hell is a Nike,...
