In the hearing, Johnson attempted to justify one particular gathering for departing aid Lee Cain, claiming they “had to happen”.
“If anyone thinks I was partying during lockdown, they’re completely wrong,” he added.
You can follow The Independent’s live blog for updates here.
Following the comments, Simply Red musician Hucknall shared his thoughts on the Conservative politician on social media.

Richard Osman has criticised the Baftas for nominating just three shows in the Best Daytime category at this year’s TV awards.
On Wednesday (22 March) morning, the awards were announced for this year’s celebration of the best in British television. You can read the full list of nominees here.
Up for the gong of Best Daytime show are quiz show The Chase, BBC centenary special The Repair Shop: A Royal Visit, and Rav Wilding’s Scam Interceptors.
However, on Twitter, Pointless creator Osman accused the TV industry of “snobbish” behaviour in failure to nominate four shows.
“Daytime TV punches far above its weight in terms of ratings, cost & popularity,” he tweeted.
“To have only 2 daytime shows on this list is a bit of a kick in the teeth for producers. If I made Bridge Of Lies, [Homes Under the Hammer], Come Dine [With Me], Lingo etc I think I’d feel robbed.

Susanna Reid has thanked ex co-host Piers Morgan for making her a more “argumentative: presenter.
The 52-year-old celebrated her 20th anniversary of hosting morning television on Wednesday’s episode of Good Morning Britain (22 March).
Reid called out Piers, thanking him for making her a “more probing” interviewer.
“Just a huge thank you to Piers Morgan of this parish – five years alongside him,” she said. “He made me bolder, more argumentative, more difficult, I think more probing... asking tricky questions.”
She continued: “We went into battle every day,.” Reid said that the show had “been slightly different since” he left.
The presenter also used the opportunity to pay tribute to her late co-host Bill Turnbull, who she first started hosting morning TV with. Turnbull died in 2022, aged 66, from prostate cancer.
After being told that Gmb had been inundated with support for Reid, presenter Charlotte Hawkins read out a message from a viewer.

Jennifer Aniston has apologised for “calling out” Adam Sandler during a live TV interview.
The actor was promoting their new comedy film Murder Mystery 2, when she was asked about her friendship with her co-star.
Aniston and Sandler, who both shot to fame in the 1990s, have been friends for many years, meeting when they were in their early twenties.
Appearing on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday (21 March), Aniston was asked if she’s ever received advice from Sandler, to which she said he usually asks her “what are you doing?!” in response “to someone I’m dating”.
But Aniston says she “very much likes to take care of” Sandler as he often overlooks his own well-being in favour of making sure everyone around him is Ok.

Steve Martin has sent fans down memory lane after posting a photo with his Only Murders in the Building co-star, Selena Gomez.
The actor and comedian shared an image of himself and Gomez standing next to each other, with Martin in a suit and Gomez wearing a white wedding dress.
“Look what just happened!” Martin captured the post on Tuesday (21 March).
With the picture presumably taken on set, fans are assuming that their outfits hint at a forthcoming storyline in their TV show, in which they play neighbours who join forces to solve a murder in their apartment building.
However, many others have drawn a link between the image and one of Martin’s most popular projects, Father of the Bride.
In the 1991 comedy film, he played George Banks, a man who struggles when his daughter Annie announces her engagement.

Life imitated art at the Succession premiere when Brian Cox was heard screaming at photographers while one of his co-stars was being interviewed.
Cox plays the irascible patriarch Logan Roy in the acclaimed HBO drama and is known for his character’s curt catchphrase: “F*** off.”
Deadline’s interview with Fisher Stevens – who plays Waystar Royco adviser Hugo Baker in the series – was interrupted by Cox’s unmistakable tones.
“You can hear Brian screaming; Brian is, um, still mad,” Stevens says in the interview.

The actor says he believes Cox will have been joking with someone: “And he’s not serious. He’s not real. He’s having fun. He’s Logan! He can do whatever the f*** he wants.

Rory Culkin’s full-frontal nude scene in Swarm was inspired by one of creator Donald Glover’s own experiences.
The brother of Macaulay and Kieran Culkin plays a man who takes the main character Dre’s (Dominique Fishback) virginity.
After the hookup, Culkin’s character presents Dre with some strawberries placed artfully in a clear bowl, which he presses up against his penis.
In an interview with Insider at the SXSW festival, Glover’s co-creator Janine Nabers revealed that the scene was inspired by the singer/actor/writer/director.
“Donald told this very funny story about a girl who he really liked, and how after they hooked, he was standing there with a bowl of cherries, just being like, ‘Hey,’” Nabers recalled.
“She was like, so not into it, because it’s so weird to hook up with a guy that you barely know and then wake up with him holding a bowl of cherries.

Chris Rock has joked that arresting former US President Donald Trump would strengthen his social status.
While on stage at a Sunday (19 March) event honouring Adam Sandler with the Mark Twain Prize for American Humour, Rock took a moment to crack a few gags about the ongoing political drama in the US.
“Are you really going to arrest Trump?” the comedian asked – per multiple US media reports – before joking that doing so is “like arresting Tupac. He’s just going to sell more records.”
Rock then suggested that indicting and apprehending the former president “is only going to make him more popular”, according to The Guardian’s David Smith.
Trump is currently facing several legal investigations into his conduct before and during his presidency, including his alleged use of campaign finances to pay for an adult film star’s silence, with whom he allegedly had an affair. Trump has denied...

The reason for weatherman Rob Marciano’s lengthy Good Morning America absence has been allegedly “revealed”.
Since 2014, Marciano has been employed as ABC’s senior meteorologist, providing extensive weather coverage across the network.
But GMA viewers noticed that Marciano has not been presenting from the studio since November 2022, with many social media users wondering why this was.
It’s now being claimed that Marciano has been “banned” from New York’s Times Square Studios, where GMA is filmed, after allegedly making a colleague feel “uncomfortable”.
A source told Page Six that Marciano was accused of “improper” behaviour and “was punished for it”.
While the alleged incident has not been divulged, it’s been claimed by a separate source that it occurred in the wake of Marciano’s divorce from his wife, Eryn, which was announced in July 2022.
This source said Marciano was struggling with the stress caused by the divorce,...

Roman Kemp has been forced to deny that a recent Creme Egg blunder was a prank.
The Capital Radio DJ revealed on Monday (20 March) that he came across a hybrid version of the Cadbury treat – half of which was milk chocolate and the other half white chocolate.
He put a photo of the Egg on Twitter, alongside the post: “What is this??? Half White Half Milk Chocolate??”
It was after this that his followers informed him that this Creme Egg was part of a promotional deal that could have seen him win up to £10,000. However, the DJ confessed that he had actually eaten it before sharing the tweet.
Six of the eggs are worth £10,000, while three are worth £5,000 – and those who discover one must take a picture with the uneaten Egg in order to win the money.
After admitting to the blunder, Kemp was inundated with posts accusing him of...

Roman Kemp made a very costly blunder after eating a very rare Creme Egg.
The DJ was snacking on the Cadbury treat at home when he came across one he had never seen before.
Kemp shared a photo of the egg – one half of which was milk chocolate, the other half white chocolate – on his Twitter page, writing: “What is this??? Half White Half Milk Chocolate??”
It was only after eating the egg that he realised it was part of a promotion that could have bagged him £10,000.
He explained on his Capital Radio show on Monday (20 March): “I was enjoying my Sunday very much. I was watching the last episode of The Last of Us and I thought to myself, ‘I’m going to treat myself. Why not? I’m going to have a Creme Egg.’”
He said his first thought, after seeing the hybrid egg, was that “someone...

Gino D’Acampo has hinted that “arguments” have forced him to quit Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip.
The TV chef has withdrawn from the ITV series, which he co-starred in alongside Gordon Ramsay and Fred Sirieix.
D’Acampo made the announcement in an Instagram post on Sunday (19 March), explaining that his decision was inspired by a desire to protect his friendships with both Ramsay and Sirieix.
According to D’Acampo, his hand was forced by scheduling conflicts caused by production, which has caused “complications”.
“Last week, I decided not to film any more Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip,” he said. “The reason is simple... nothing to do with Gordon and Fred – the friendship is very strong – it’s just because we can’t get the dates together.”
The chef went on to say he would “rather the friendship than get into arguments, so I’ve decided not to do Gordon,...

A comment Fred Sirieix made about Gordon, Gino and Fred: Road Trip has resurfaced in the wake of his co-star’s decision to quit.
On Sunday (19 March), Gino D’Acampo revealed he would no longer be a part of the series due to “problems” behind-the-scenes.
In a video shared with his social media followers, the celebrity chef said that “complications” with contracts had led to his decision, and said he would rather quit than damage his friendship with both Sirieix and Gordon Ramsay.
Just 10 days ago, during a chat with Lorraine Kelly on the ITV morning show Lorraine, Sirieix addressed these complications, stating: “We are talking about dates for the next one. It is difficult to juggle all of our diaries.”
He told MailOnline the previous week, while promoting his latest series, Fred’s Last Resort: “It is a bit difficult to juggle all our diaries, but we are getting there.

Paul Grant opened up about “blowing” his Star Wars fortune and “drinking too much” in a video filmed just three weeks before his death.
The video is filmed at London’s King’s Cross station, where he collapsed on Thursday (16 March). He was pronounced braindead after being rushed to hospital and, three days later, his family decided to switch off his life support machine.
His family have paid tribute to the former actor and stuntman, who enjoyed success in the 1980s after playing an Ewok in the 1983 film Return of the Jedi.
That decade, he also appeared in the Tom Cruise film Legend and Labyrinth opposite David Bowie.
Three weeks before his death, Grant was seemingly interviewed at random by YouTube channel Revelation 22:13 in King’s Cross station, and surprised the interviewer by revealing he played an Ewok in the Star Wars franchise.
