NBC’s Chicago Med will have new leadership heading into its 10th season.
Co-showrunners Diane Frolov and Andrew Schneider, who have been with the drama since it debuted in 2015, are stepping down at the end of the show’s current run. The married couple have helmed Med for nine seasons and more than 170 episodes to date. A new showrunner will be named later.
That’s an unusually long tenure for any series, let alone one hailing from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment, which frequently shakes up operations both in front of and behind the camera. Frolov and Schneider came in ahead of Chicago Med’s series premiere, taking over for Andrew Dettman. In contrast, Med’s fellow Chicago series, Fire and Pd, have changed showrunners multiple times over the course of their runs.

Dick Wolf is in for another busy season at NBC. No surprise here, the Peacock network has renewed “Chicago Med,” “Chicago Fire,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Law & Order” and “Law & Order: Svu” for the 2024-25 broadcast TV season. Among Dick Wolf scripted series, that leaves just “Law & Order: Organized Crime” on the bubble; a renewal for that show, which has experienced multiple showrunner changes in its short life, is still in discussion.
Among the shows, this will rep the 26th season of “Law & Order: SVU,” the 24th season of “Law & Order,” Season 13 for “Chicago Fire,” the 12th season for “Chicago PD” and the 10th season for “Chicago Med.” All of the renewed series are produced by Universal Studio Group’s Universal Television division, along with Wolf Entertainment, and all shows stream the following day on Peacock. (Wolf’s deal with Universal is currently through 2027.)

NBC has renewed most — but not all — of the shows in its two biggest franchises for the 2024-25 season.
The network has ordered new seasons of all three of its Chicago dramas — Med, Fire and Pd — along with Law & Order and Law & Order: Svu. Notably missing from the list is Law & Order: Organized Crime, whose status is “still under discussion,” according to NBC. All six series come from Dick Wolf’s Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television.
Svu will add to its record as the longest-running primetime drama in American TV history with a 26th season in 2024-25, while Law & Order — which recently saw the departure of series fixture Sam Waterston — will air its 24th. Chicago Med will hit double digits with its 10th season, Fire will air its 13th and Pd its 12th.
Long-tail ratings for all five renewed series are up substantially vs. last season: Per NBC,...

The Writers Guild of America West held a rally Wednesday night to demonstrate solidarity with the other Hollywood unions in their collective contract battles against Hollywood’s major employers.
About 1,800 guild members attended the meeting at the Shrine Auditorium, and heard from WGA leaders about the reasons behind the two-day old strike. One of the stars of the show, however, was Lindsay Dougherty, the 39-year-old leader of Teamsters Local 399.
“We’re all sticking together,” Dougherty told Variety outside the event. “We have an opportunity to change things in this industry, and the only way we’re going to do that is if we’re together.”
The Teamsters have a contract in place through July 31, 2024, and so cannot join the strike. But under their contract, Teamsters cannot be disciplined for refusing to cross established picket lines.
“Every single truck that we know of has not crossed,” she said. It’s...

Exclusive: T.V. Carpio (Big Sky) has joined the cast of NBC’s Chicago Med in a recurring role, Deadline hears. She will portray Dr. Grace Song, a new doctor hired by Jack Dayton (Sasha Roiz) who will shake things up when the show returns in the spring.
Grace’s hiring comes as no surprise following the news that Jack bought controlling interest in Gaffney Medical Group in the fall finale—building up his own team is par for the course. If Sharon Goodwin’s (S. Epatha Merkerson) reaction to the news of Jack’s come-up is any indication of what’s to come, however, it’s more than likely the addition of Grace won’t be the only change ahead for the hospital.
Carpio’s casting follows multiple cast exits including Brian Tee, Asjha Cooper, Sarah Rafferty, Kristen Hager, and Guy Lockard.

Exclusive: Marlyne Barrett has signed a new, multi-year deal to remain on NBC’s Chicago Med.
Barrett, who is an original cast member, is about to begin her eighth season on the series. She plays Nurse Maggie Lockwood.
Last year, original cast members S. Epatha Merkerson, Oliver Platt, Nick Gehlfuss and Brian Tee reupped their deals on the Chicago Fire spinoff from Wolf Entertainment and Universal Television. Barrett wasn’t part of those negotiations since her contract wasn’t set to expire until this year.
Before starring in the NBC drama, Barrett was known to audiences for her portrayal as Council President Nerese Campbell on The Wire. She was also Ian McShane’s attaché, Tomasina, on NBC’s Kings and played Felicia Marquand on FX’s Damages. She also appeared on John Ridley’s ABC series American Crime.

Steven Weber will be back on Chicago Med for the upcoming eighth season of the NBC medical drama. Weber, who portrays Dr. Dean Archer, joined as a recurring in the sixth season and was upped to series regular for Season 7 in a one-year deal. He has closed a new deal and will return as a series regular in Season 8.
Weber’s Dr. Dean Archer is current head of the E.D., whose colleagues at Gaffney Chicago Medical Center love to hate—though they can’t deny he’s a great surgeon. That dislike stems from three things: playing a role in fan-favorite Dr. Choi (Brian Tee) getting shot in the Season 6 finale which helped him climb the ranks; his tendency to break the rules in order to get the job done; and his antagonistic approach to dealing with patients.
Of late, Archer is proving how coloring outside the lines can also be helpful.
