Specific images of the Holocaust have endlessly punctuated the film and TV landscape: The barbed wire of a concentration camp. Naked bodies rendered to skin and bone, tossed in discarded piles. Gleeful abuse and random killings by evil Nazis. Hollywood has repeatedly ingrained that imagery when presenting this horrific time in history, so to continue conjuring it adds to the collective trauma of an entire people.
Yet all these displays and more are the Sky Studios and Peacock co-production “The Tattooist of Auschwitz.” That makes it a challenging show to sit through, let alone binge six episodes of, when the event series drops on Peacock on May 2.
The series finds inspiration in Heather Morris’ controversial, bestselling 2018 book of the same name. Morris wrote the debut novel after spending time with a Slovakian Holocaust survivor named Lali Sokolov (nee Ludwig Eisenberg), who was a tattooist at Auschwitz II-Birkenau.

Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” is set to dominate the original song race. Oscar voters will likely pick all three contenders from the blockbuster for the original song shortlist: Billie Eilish’s tear-inducing ballad “What Was I Made For,” Dua Lipa’s “Dance the Night” and Ryan Gosling’s pitiful song of feeling inadequate “I’m Just Ken.”
Mark Ronson and songwriting partner Andrew Wyatt wrote the latter two, while Eilish partnered with brother Finneas on her tune. However, with only two nominations allowed in this category, it will be left to the music branch to decide which two they pick.
Lenny Kravitz eyes a spot on the list with “Road to Freedom,” a song he penned for George C. Wolfe’s “Rustin.” The soulful song’s horns and trombones are key to this composition, which accompanies the film’s end credits.

Disney’s live-action remake of The Little Mermaid debuted on Disney+ last week and made one hell of a splash. According to Disney, The Little Mermaid has garnered 16 million views in its first five days on the streaming service, which makes it the most-watched Disney movie premiere on Disney+ since the release of Hocus Pocus 2 last year.
While The Little Mermaid wasn’t one of Disney’s strongest-performing live-action remakes, it went on to gross $569 million worldwide and stands (so far) as one of the highest-grossing movies of the year. Judging by the streaming numbers, it seems that many were eager to revisit The Little Mermaid (or watch it for the first time) on the streaming service. Disney says that a view is defined as total stream time divided by runtime.

The hit live-action "The Little Mermaid" just hit Disney+ to stream on Sept. 6, and apart from the original movie's songs like "Part of Your World," "Under the Sea," and "Kiss the Girl," audiences everywhere have gotten to enjoy four new songs courtesy of the original animated movie's composer, Alan Menken, and Lin-Manuel Miranda.
For the most part, the songs from the original movie sound the same in the 2023 remake, but Menken did give fans a heads-up that there would be some minor changes to the original lyrics to make the movie, which was initially released in 1989, feel more modern. "There are some lyric changes in 'Kiss the Girl' because people have gotten very sensitive about the idea that [Prince Eric] would, in any way, force himself on [Ariel]," Menken told Vanity Fair in March.
No one would blame you if you initially missed the tweaks Menken and Miranda made to "Kiss the Girl.

The live-action "The Little Mermaid" movie, which just hit Disney+ to stream on Sept. 6, stayed almost entirely faithful to the original animation that came out in 1989. Still, it did make small changes. Apart from the four new songs added to the film, some notable tweaks to Prince Eric's story made his and Ariel's love story all the more meaningful.
Read on to get a breakdown of how the creators behind the new live-action Little Mermaid brought Prince Eric's character into the 21st century.
Prince Eric's Backstory in the Original "The Little Mermaid"
In the original "The Little Mermaid," Prince Eric's backstory is pretty one-note. He's a handsome, adventurous prince in search of a wife when he's saved from drowning by Ariel amid a shipwreck. When he awakes to Ariel singing to him, he immediately becomes enamored with her and her voice, but his story essentially begins and ends there.

When “World on Fire” premiered on the BBC in September 2019, no one could have known that the World War II drama would be one of the last major scripted debuts on the public broadcaster before the pandemic.
The PBS Masterpiece co-production — which follows the interconnected lives of British and European families during the outbreak of war — confirmed it would return at the end of its Season 1 finale, but the onset of the Covid-19 crisis just four months later and its impact on global production made the prospect of setting up a continent-spanning war drama all the more unlikely.
Yet with some heroic scheduling, rewritten scripts and clever location and CGI combos, Season 2 returned to British screens on Sunday after a four-year hiatus, premiering to an audience indelibly changed by a global and life-altering event of their own.

“The Little Mermaid” is back.
And this time the beloved Disney classic, originally released in 1989 and heralding a new golden age of animated features for the company, is being brought to life via a combination of live-action photography and computer-generated imagery. It still loosely conforms to the story laid out by Hans Christian Andersen in 1837 and hews more closely to the animated feature written and directed by Ron Clements and John Musker.
Ariel (now portrayed by Halle Bailey) is still a feisty mermaid living under the thumb of her overbearing father King Triton (Javier Bardem). She still swoons over Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) and makes a Faustian bargain with Ursula the sea witch (Melissa McCarthy). And she still has a trio of animal sidekicks. If you’ve seen the animated original, you’ll be able to predict what is around every crashing wave, which isn’t to say that there...

The new Little Mermaid film reinforces the sense that the Disney princesses’ significant others are doomed to non-existence
Much has been said over the years about the Disney princesses – some are bad role models, some good, they set impossible expectations for young girls, they’re predominantly white, and so on. But what about their male counterparts? Just like the princesses have evolved as characters, so have the roles of the Disney princes; yet, we rarely hear about their cultural impact (or lack thereof).
So who are the Disney princes? The latest iteration of the character is Prince Eric in the live-action remake of The Little Mermaid. Although he has more screen time than in the original, he’s arguably even more redundant this time around. The film follows the same story beats, but it overhauls Ariel from a naive and reckless figure into a mature protagonist who doesn’t fall...

This article contains spoilers for "The Little Mermaid."
There are quite a few changes in "The Little Mermaid" live-action version, from the ending to Prince Eric's backstory, and King Triton's characterization. Director Rob Marshall reminded viewers in his interview with SFX that his film "really is a reimagining of 'Little Mermaid' more than a remake. There are things in animated musicals that you just accept that you just wouldn't accept in live-action." One of those things is the "Les Poissons" song.
In the comical number, Chef Louis chases Sebastian around his kitchen. The original scene relies a lot on the juxtaposition of scale and Sebastian's over-the-top expressions for its humor. Sebastian's tiny body avoids a huge pot of boiling water and flies into the air. His eyes bulge out and he nearly throws up when he realizes that he could be cooked. He even hunches into his shell to try and hide.

Jonah Hauer-King Just Found Love Onscreen in "The Little Mermaid" - He's Partnered Up Offscreen, Too
Jonah Hauer-King is our new crush. On May 26, the British actor made his highly anticipated debut as Prince Eric in Disney's live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid." Christopher Daniel Barnes originally played the iconic character in the 1989 animated film.
Initially, there were rumors that Harry Styles would play Prince Eric in the remake, but it was later revealed that he declined the offer. In an April 4 interview with Entertainment Weekly, director Rob Marshall explained the "As It Was" singer passed on the role due to him wanting to star in "darker" projects (which turned out to be "Don't Worry Darling" and "My Policeman"). In the end, though, Hauer-King won over Marshall for the role of Prince Eric due to his "sweetness" and "deep passion," as well as his natural chemistry with Halle Bailey, who plays Ariel.

Spoiler Alert: This interview includes details about Disney’s The Little Mermaid
Good tides and accolades continue to roll in for Disney’s latest live-action remake, The Little Mermaid. Similarly to the 1989 classic, The Little Mermaid follows the story of the titular mermaid, Ariel, a precocious teenager who yearns to walk amongst the sun-soaked earth of the human world. Since the film’s debut over the three-day weekend, it made an impressive box office splash to the tune of $95.5M and is projected to set sail towards $163.8M, factoring in the international markets as it makes its global debut through Sunday. It seems that The Little Mermaid’s continued success is due in no small part to the transformative magic of the film’s onscreen players, whose modernized performances offer more to chew on this time around than its animated predecessor, warranting repeat visits to the movie theater.

My 3-year-old’s poor, unfortunate soul.
On Saturday, the family Maglio — me, my wife, and our two daughters, aged 3 and 6 — reclined for the 2:45 P.M. showing of “The Little Mermaid” at the Cinemark Hazlet 12 in Hazlet, New Jersey. Well, the 3-year-old didn’t move her chair; upright, it was already like a queen-sized bed to her. Plus, she ended up spending the vast majority of the movie on my wife’s lap. (More on that in a bit.)
For the 6-year-old, it was just her second time in a theater for a movie; her first experience was “Frozen II.” Then the pandemic hit, and her little sister rounded out the family. For the 3-year-old, Memorial Day Weekend 2023 marked her first time in an actual movie theater.

Paloma Faith, a singer and actress in shows like Pennyworth and Dangerous Liaisons, watched The Little Mermaid over the weekend and is calling out the storyline.

“As a mother of girls I don’t want my kids to think it’s ok to give up your entire voice and your powers to love a man,” Faith shared in a now-deleted Instagram post that Metro caught. “Wtf is this sh*t. Not what I want to be teaching next gen women at all.”
The premise of The Little Mermaid revolves around a mermaid that wishes to live on land. After falling for Prince Eric, Ariel makes a deal with the sea witch Ursula to use her powers to give her legs but in exchange, she has to give up her voice.

A whole new generation of little girls are falling in love with “The Little Mermaid” and that’s thanks to Halle Bailey.
The 23-year-old actress stars as the titular, headstrong princess in Disney’s new live-action reimagining, and her casting has hit home in a big way for little Black girls who are seeing themselves portrayed as the beloved Disney character for the first time onscreen.
The film also stars Jonah Hauer-King as Prince Eric, Melissa McCarthy as Ursula, and Javier Bardem as King Triton, with Daveed Diggs as the voice of Sebastian the crab, Jacob Tremblay as Flounder, and Awkwafina as Scuttle.
The role feels like a dream come true according to Bailey, whose previous forays into acting include starring alongside her older sister and musical partner, Chlöe Bailey, on Freeform’s “Grown-ish” series. The singer tells Et that while it “feels absolutely amazing” to join the iconic ranks of the Disney Princesses,...

Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” is making quite the splash at the domestic box office this weekend, with an opening day total of $38 million.
The fantasy, which is opening in 4,320 theaters, is expected to gross between $120 million and $130 million over the four-day Memorial Day weekend.
The musical remake, starring Halle Bailey as the mermaid princess Ariel, took in $10.3 million in previews on Thursday, ranking as the seventh-highest haul for a movie rated G or PG. That puts the film on track to gross well over $100 million over the holiday weekend. With a $250 million production budget, “The Little Mermaid” must bait box office success in order to make a reasonable return.
“Fast X,” the tenth installment in the “Fast and Furious” franchise, debuted last weekend to a cool $67 million Stateside. This weekend, it’s estimated to bring in about $28 million over the four-day holiday weekend, which clearly puts in second place after “The Little Mermaid.

Gather around, everybody, and let me tell you of a magical time. It was the turn of the century, which is really old-timey way of saying just about anytime between about 1990 and 2010, and not every movie Disney made was a gigantic and expensive exploitation of one of its most popular intellectual properties. This was a time when Disney exploited its most popular intellectual properties in smaller and more affordable ways, by making lots of straight-to-video sequels and prequels to hit films like "The Lion King," "Beauty and the Beast," and "The Little Mermaid."
Some might argue that these straight-to-video cash-ins were, you know, cash-ins. They were milking fans of these beloved theatrical releases for everything they were worth, after all, with films that didn't match the original in terms of ambition or, often, craft. But ignore these oft-forgotten films at your peril, because sometimes they were not only good, but...

The live-action version of Disney's "The Little Mermaid" hits theaters tomorrow. In addition to some of the songs we know and love from the 1989 animated version of Hans Christian Andersen's classic tale, we're getting some new ones from composers Alan Menken and Lin-Manuel Miranda. Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) has one now, and Scuttle (voice of Awkwafina) even raps.
I attended the recent press conference for the film, where director/producer Rob Marshall and producer John DeLuca spoke about a song that didn't make the cut. When I got to talk to them one-on-one during the movie's press day, I asked them about it. The song was for Javier Bardem, who plays King Triton — Ariel's (Halle Bailey) Mer-Papa. The two shared their perspectives on Bardem's prowess as a singer and the reason why the song was cut. But fear not, fishy friends...

Director Rob Marshall knew from the outset that the hardest part of his live-action reimagining of Disney’s “The Little Mermaid” would be pulling off the Oscar-winning “Under the Sea” Caribbean musical number. It wasn’t just the tricky translation from 2D to CG with hundreds of singing photoreal fish in the underwater environment (courtesy of Framestore’s expert animation) but also the complicated dance choreography set to the toe-tapping song by Alan Menken and the late Howard Ashman (to whom the film is dedicated).
And they killed it: The joyous musical number is the animated highlight of the film, which deservedly got the loudest applause at early screenings.
Performed by Sebastian the crab (voiced by Daveed Diggs), the song is a plea for young mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) to forget about joining Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) in the human world and stay sea-bound where she belongs. Considering the beauty,...

Back in 1989, Disney animation was having a renaissance. "The Little Mermaid" brought fans back to the theaters to see a brand new Disney princess in Ariel, the teenage mermaid who longs for adventures on land. She falls in love with Prince Eric but cannot speak to him after giving her voice to the sea witch Ursula to get her fins replaced by legs. Ariel and Eric ultimately marry at the end of the film. I'd feel bad for giving you spoilers, but it's been 34 years since it came out.
There has been some modernization of Ariel's character in the new live-action version of "The Little Mermaid," so I wondered if Ariel (Halle Bailey) and Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) would actually marry this time around. Disney’s live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” is beginning its box office swim with $10.3 million in previews. It opens in 4,320 theaters on Friday.
Thursday’s preview haul is the seventh-highest ever for a G- or PG-rated movie. “The Little Mermaid” also picked up $850,000 from Wednesday early access screenings.
Starring singer and actor Halle Bailey as Ariel, the new movie is projected to open with $100 million this holiday weekend. With Memorial Day on Monday, its four-day total could land between $120 million and $125 million.
“The Little Mermaid” is expected to make a big splash as one of Disney’s more successful live-action remakes. In comparison, Disney’s most recent remake, the 2019 photorealistic and computer animated “The Lion King,” roared with a $191 million opening from $23 million in previews. It went on to make more than $1 billion globally. And just a couple months before “The Lion King” released, the live-action “Aladdin” opened with...

Disney's live-action version of the 1989 animated classic "The Little Mermaid" is finally in theaters. In the earlier film, Prince Eric's (Jonah Hauer-King) family isn't mentioned, but in the new one, he's got a mom. Queen Selina is played by British actor Noma Dumezweni. She was also Penny Farthing in "Mary Poppins Returns" and appeared in HBO's "The Undoing" and the Netflix series, "The Watcher."
With Queen Selina in the mix, there are some changes to the story and to Prince Eric himself. So, does this new character work? Is Queen Selina necessary to the story? I recently attended the...

"The Little Mermaid" was a vital turning point for Disney. Released in 1989, it was the first princess story in 30 years since "Sleeping Beauty," Ariel was a rebellious heroine like no other, and composer Alan Menken and lyricist Howard Ashman created a Broadway-style soundtrack. The songs have emotional depth, guide the story along, and communicate the characters' inner desires.
The incredible vocal talents of the original film made these songs treasures. Jodi Benson's sweet, crystalline voice — especially in her pivotal number "Part of Your World" — defined Ariel as an adventurous young woman and a new generation of princesses who would stop at nothing to get what they want. Samuel E. Wright's booming voice and vivacious energy are perfect for the overdramatic crustacean — especially the classic romp "Under the Sea." The dramatic, deep-throated performance of "Poor Unfortunate Souls" by Pat Carroll is delightfully wicked. These musical numbers are beloved classics,...

The animated version of King Triton in "The Little Mermaid" fits the 1980s stereotype of a hardbody that actors such as Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger made popular during that era. He has a brutish personality that matches his buff physique. Trition is like a ticking time bomb; his explosive temper is on the verge of erupting the more he learns about Ariel's interactions with humans. He dismisses the entire human race as "spineless, savage, harpooning, fish-eaters, incapable of any feeling."
Although his overprotection comes with a place of love, he is incapable of discussing his aggravated feelings with his daughter and resorts to threats of punishment or destroying Ariel's cave of human objects. The filmmakers visually express his intimidating nature by framing him in shadows, often against the menacing glow of his powerful trident. One of the few times King Triton softens is when he believes Ariel is in love with a merman.

One of the ways "The Little Mermaid" live-action improves on the original is the development of Prince Eric's character. In the animated film, Eric has a lot more personality than the previous princes in "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs," "Cinderella," and "Sleeping Beauty" — he actually has interests like sailing, playing the flute, and walking on the beach with his adorable sheepdog named Max. Grimsby, Eric's royal advisor, is desperate to find him a wife, but the prince would rather rough it up with his shipmates.
But in the latter half of 1989's "The Little Mermaid," Prince Eric makes his obsession with the girl who rescues him from a boat wreck his whole personality. Eric instantly falls in love with her beautiful voice and wants to marry her. His relationship with Ariel, who he believes is a shipwreck victim, is more of a distraction from holing himself up in the...

As I mentioned last week, nostalgia appears to be playing a big role in this just-started cinema Summer season. The remake of that 1990s buddy comedy may just be the tip of the iceberg. For this holiday weekend’s big, really big as Ed Sullivan would say, movie release, go back just two or three more years to 1989. That year may be best known for the Batman box office blockbuster, but it’s also a watershed moment for feature Animation, particularly at the “Mouse House”. Disney feature animation was just beginning to snap out of a creative stupor as the modest successes of The Great Mouse Detective and Oliver & Company began to offset the losses of the fantasy debacle The Black Cauldron. This is all covered in the superb documentary feature Waking Sleeping Beauty. And then two Broadway “whiz-kids,” thought that the company should return to classic fairy tales with a Tony-worthy musical score.

I don't know about you, but I've been calling my fork a dinglehopper since 1989 when Disney's animated film "The Little Mermaid" came out. It was the beginning of a resurgence in Disney animation, and I bet you — like me — know every song. Disney's live-action version of the story about teen mermaid Ariel (Halle Bailey) is about to hit theaters, and while we know most of the story, we also know that there are new songs and that Ariel's relationship with Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) has been updated. Add in the fact that this is being released in an era where mid- and/or post-credit scenes are common, particularly for Disney-owned properties, and it might lead you to wonder if we're getting one or more of those this time around. After all, we did get a direct-to-video sequel, "The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea, and the prequel, "The Little Mermaid: Ariel's Beginnings,...

Get out your dinglehoppers, everyone: Disney's live-action version of the 1989 classic animated film "The Little Mermaid" opens at the end of this month. The film stars Halle Bailey as Ariel, the mermaid longing for adventure. She gives up her voice to the sea witch, Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), to have a chance to live on land, and to remain there, she must receive a true love's kiss from Prince Eric (Jonah Hauer-King) in three days. As you might expect, that won't be an easy task.
Helping Ariel navigate this new world are her little buddies Flounder (voice of Jacob Tremblay) and Scuttle (voice of Awkwafina). I recently spoke to the actors who play the fish and bird sidekicks about their roles, working with director Rob Marshall, Scuttle's new song, the unusual voiceover situation they were in with this film, and its potential impact on future generations.

Disney’s live-action “The Little Mermaid” is both a faithful and expanded adaptation of the studio’s 1989 animated classic, which featured an iconic voice performance from Jodi Benson as princess Ariel. News broke in April that director Rob Marshall and his “Little Mermaid” team changed lyrics to classic songs such as “Kiss the Girl” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls” to address matters of consent and more. The love story between Ariel and Prince Eric was also overhauled so that Ariel isn’t simply giving up her voice for the love of a man, which is perhaps the biggest criticism made these days against the 1989 original.
“We’re talking about starting our [voiceover] sessions in ’86 [for the original film],” Benson recently told Entertainment Weekly, defending the new film’s decision to update “The Little Mermaid” to contemporary times. “It’s 2023, so we have to grow, we have to learn, we have to be aware of our surroundings.

If you want to see a musical adapted from stage to screen and adapted well, Rob Marshall is your dream director. For Chicago, he went high-concept, recontextualizing the Broadway songs as vaudeville numbers from the imagination of Roxie Hart. With Into the Woods, every prince, witch, and baker’s wife got a show-stopping number that justified why movie audiences should care about them. Marshall is keenly aware that, while theater is a heightened space in which it’s completely natural for characters to belt out their “I want” and torch songs, onscreen, it’s a tougher sell.

"The Little Mermaid" is a monumental film in the history of Disney and Western animation at large. John Musker and Ron Clements made drastic changes to Hans Christian Andersen's original Danish fairy tale and delivered a Broadway-style musical extravaganza that saved the studio during their worst and darkest time. This movie helped usher the Disney Renaissance, leading the way for some of their best movies. Even today, "The Little Mermaid" remains a film with not just stunning animation and music, but also a radical message.
But, according to Disney, all that is in the past, because live-action is the future. /Film's own Jenna Busch recently attended a press conference with the filmmakers behind the live-action "The Little Mermaid." As the harsh, unforgiving waves crash with abandon in the opening moments of Rob Marshall’s “The Little Mermaid,” there is a sense that a true loss of innocence is on the brink. In this new live-action adaptation things are not as bubblegum sweet and bright as the last time we visited Ariel’s story. The sea is rougher, less forgiving.
There is, as Ariel sings in the famed “Part of Your World,” something starting inside the heart of a tender, curious, and desperate mermaid the same way it did in 1989, but Marshall’s vision finds the raw humanity within the story, grounding a once-completely fantastical tale with a strong sense of realism that works to its advantage.

Film fans who take in Disney’s new live-action remake of “The Little Mermaid” may leave the cinema wondering what the filmmakers have against Kate Middleton.
That’s the report coming from Page Six, which claims a film reviewer who watched a screening revealed that one scene appears to take a veiled jab at the Princess of Wales.
In the scene, mermaid Ariel (played by Halle Bailey) appears to show disdain for Princess Kate.

“Ariel has sacrificed her voice in order to get to the surface and [meet] Prince Eric,” the source told Page Six. “She can’t speak so he tries to guess her name. His first guess is Diana. His second guess is Catherine, but after [Ariel gives a disgusted] reaction, he [concludes] ‘Ok, definitely not Catherine.’”

It seems we've had to wait an eternity for the live-action remake of "The Little Mermaid", but it's coming around faster than we can shake our imaginary mermaid tails at. Until the movie drops on May 26, we can dream about the cast's leading man, Jonah Hauer-King, aka Prince Eric. Acting alongside Halle Bailey – who recently transformed into her character of Ariel off-screen at the world premiere – Hauer-King is taking on the iconic role and love interest in the Disney film.
Fans might remember a certain Mr. Harry Styles was originally in line for the role, but turned it down. And stepping into the "As It Was" singer's shoes is no mean feat. Yet Hauer-King is not a stranger to tackling beloved romantic heroes: he stole plenty of hearts playing Laurie in "Little Women" alongside "Stranger Things" star Maya Hawke a few years back. He's also worked with a whole host of big-name actors,...

Jonah Hauer-King, who plays Prince Eric in Disney’s live-action The Little Mermaid, went through three months of rehearsals for the part, which included learning to ride horses, work with dogs, scuba dive, row and operate a horse carriage. “I’ve never done so much training in my life,” says the 27-year-old London native, whose credits include 2019’s A Dog’s Way Home and the BBC drama World on Fire.
Hauer-King first tried out for The Little Mermaid as a “fun experience,” thinking it would never go anywhere. Seven months of auditions ensued, which included an Ariel-esque moment of losing his voice the day before he was asked to sing in front of director Rob Marshall (he met with Marshall a few weeks later to try again). The actor also screen-tested alongside star Halle Bailey, eventually landing a role that Harry Styles also was up for (“He’s pretty cool and amazingly talented,...
