For 12 years, Yoshinori Ono has been the face of the Street Fighter series, much like Ed Boon is to Mortal Kombat and Katuhiro Harada is to Tekken. After a trilogy of Street Fighter III titles came and went in the late-90s with little mainstream success (costly arcade hardware and lack of marketing for home ports didn’t help), the once giant of the fighting game genre coasted on its reputation and stopped releasing brand new installments beyond a crossover game or an updated home port. Ono helped change that as the producer and project manager of Street Fighter IV in 2008, bringing the series back to the forefront after nearly a decade.
Since then, he’s been an eccentric spokesman for the Street Fighter series. Sadly, his time at Capcom has come to an end. On Sunday, Ono confirmed on Twitter that he was leaving the publisher after almost three decades.

M. Bison's defiant creation from Street Fighter IV is returning with a new form. Behold the power of the Tanden Engine!
On Feb. 14, Street Fighter V: Arcade Edition upgrades into Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. One of the selling points of the new version of the game is its cast of 40 playable characters. That’s all well and good, but even with the recent release of Gill to the Dlc, there are only 39 characters so far.
Enter Capcom Cup 2019. At the end of the tournament, producer Yoshinori Ono stepped out to mess with the fans and tease a new trailer, only to act like he didn’t have one after all. Event host and All Elite Wrestling ring god Kenny Omega came to the rescue by superkicking Ono and releasing the trailer himself.
The 40th fighter will be Seth, the big bad of Street Fighter IV.

At least as far as mainstream Western audiences are concerned, Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter remain top dogs in the fighting game market. With well over two decades of history, both franchises have spanned multiple console and player generations, always innovating in order to bring in new fans to join the old guard, as it were.
But despite the long-running popularity of both series, not once has a crossover between both ever occurred. For a genre that arguably boasts more collaborative projects and spinoffs than any other, that such a merging remains unrealized is bizarre, to say the least. Capcom especially, who’s partnered with Marvel, Snk, Namco and many others during its tenure, would jump at the chance to have a game jam with NetherRealm Studios, right?
Unfortunately, that’s not the case.

Despite the backlash it received on launch due to a perceived lack of content and server issues, Capcom is fully committed to supporting Street Fighter V in the future, with the beat ’em up’s producer Yoshinori Ono stating that a roadmap leading up to “2020 or so,” has already been planned out. Speaking to Famitsu in a recent interview (translated by EventHubs), Ono said that post-launch support for Street Fighter V isn’t “just a 1-2 year thing,” with the publisher already “looking pretty far ahead.”
What exactly that roadmap entails isn’t clear, but it doesn’t necessarily mean that Capcom has four years-worth of content planned for the fighter. While we’ll no doubt be getting new Dlc characters, stages, costumes and the like going forward, ‘support’ could just as likely relate to tournaments, server maintenance and bug fixes.

Sales of Street Fighter V have reached 1.4 million copies between PlayStation 4 and PC, Capcom has confirmed in their latest Investor Relations report. However, despite the high number, the figure has fallen short of the 2 million target set by the company prior to release. The current sales account for units sold up to the end of Capcom’s previous financial year, which ended on March 31, leaving the deficit at a troubling 600,000.
There are several possible explanations for the smaller-than-expected sales numbers, but most will attribute the disappointing result to the criticism on launch day that the game felt more like an early access title rather than a full release, having been devoid of any substantial single player features, most notably an arcade mode traditionally included in past entries.

According to a Tweet on Capcom’s official Street Fighter V Twitter page, the studio will be addressing the beat ’em up’s rage-quitting issues in an update to be released before the end of April. The update didn’t provide any details on how or specifically when the fix will be made available though, just that they’re “planning to roll out a system this month that will address the rage quitting issue in #Sfv”.
Rage-quitting refers to the issue wherein players will intentionally quit a match against another human opponent when they know they’re going to lose in an effort to negate any penalty they would usually incur by letting the game record their loss. Capcom’s been aware of the problem since release day, and has been working on a fix ever since. In an effort to provide some sort of stop-gap while they work on the remedy,...

Capcom Producer Yoshinori Ono has reflected on the troubled launch of Street Fighter V, conceding that the studio had greatly “underestimated the popularity of some of the single-player features.”
Emerging onto the scene following two beta tests, the state of the brawler’s servers drew criticism from fans and critics alike during its early days on the market, but it was really the missing single-player features – namely additional character stories and survival mode, which are due to arrive in the coming months – that was cause for concern.
Now almost two months after release, Ono has spoke about the Sfv launch with Game Informer, stating that “I think it’s safe to say that we underestimated the popularity of some of the single-player features. That said, we are excited about the two all-new single-player modes – character story and survival – and we have plans to continue to refine and expand onto those experiences.

Samurai action adventure series Onimusha could be revived for a new generation says Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono...
Capcom's just days away from launching Street Fighter V, the latest in its hit brawler series that has somehow managed to remain a vital force over its near 30 year history. And as Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono has begun to bang the marketing drum for that game, he's revealed to the Daily Star that talks have begun about reviving another franchise at the company: Onimusha.
A mainstay of the PlayStation 2 era, Onimusha was a highly successful samurai-versus-demons action adventure series, which spawned several sequels and spin-offs between 2000 and 2006, before quietly drifting into limbo following the release of Onimusha: Dawn Of Dreams. The last time we heard from the Onimusha name, it was the browser-based Onimusha Soul in 2012.
According to Ono, however, there are "conversations happening at high levels" over how best to revive the Onimusha name.

Action-adventure series Onimusha is potentially the next Capcom franchise in line to receive some revival treatment, according to Yoshinori Ono. In a recent interview held with UK newspaper The Daily Star, Ono spoke candidly about the prospect of reviving fan favorite series of yesteryear, with one such example being Onimusha, which started life on the PlayStation 2.
Of the prospect of an Onimusha resurrection, Ono said:

Some strange things have been happening in the world of Street Fighter V in previous weeks. Various eagle-eyed fans of the upcoming beat ‘em up have noticed in the game’s most recent showings that animations for certain characters have been changed or removed entirely, seemingly without reason.
After so long in the dark though, the game’s producer Yoshinori Ono has broken silence on the changes, telling Uol Jogos why the studio decided to change certain scenes. The interview, conducted in Portuguese, was translated by a member of NeoGAF and reads:
We want the professional players and the casual fans of the series to return, but we also want to reach those who have never even touched a fighting game. So we can’t have something in the game that makes people think, This is not acceptable.’
Probably we won’t be able to remove everything that could offend someone.

Street Fighter V‘s third beta period begins on December 18, according to the game’s director, Yoshinori Ono. Capcom had previously stated that the beta would start on December 17 and run until Sunday, but the former date seems more likely, considering both previous betas have begun on a Friday.
Capcom have yet to announce which characters will be present and playable this time around, but there’s been several new announcements since the second beta concluded. Zangief, Laura, Dhalsim and F.A.N.G. have all been revealed over the last two months, and have yet to be made playable in any form for the public.
The most recent reveal happened just two days ago at Sony’s PlayStation Experience. F.A.N.G. (pictured above) fills the last empty slot of Street Fighter V‘s base roster, bringing the total to 16 brawlers.
The full roster looks like this:
Ryu Ken Zangief Dhalsim F.

Producer Yoshinori Ono has been talking about 2016's Street Fighter V, and teases "something that nobody is expecting"...
Looking back, it's hard to believe that the Street Fighter series was in something of a creative funk back in the late 2000s. Eight years had elapsed since the release of Street Fighter EX3, and the powers that be at Capcom were initially resistant to making a numerical sequel to its long-running fighting franchise.
Thankfully, producer Yoshinori Ono pushed through that resistance, and the resulting success of 2008's Street Fighter IV and its updates gave the series a real creative kick up the backside. The popularity of Street Fighter IV was such that Ono had none of the trouble getting the greenlight for Street Fighter V.
"I've worked on many different projects within Capcom, but in my career here, the greenlight process was comfortably the most straightforward," Ono told Edge Magazine in a new interview.

Free-to-play RPG Deep Down is very much alive and kicking despite months of silence, according to Capcom.
The Japanese publisher touched upon the game’s prolonged development in a recent interview with 4Gamer (translated by Siliconera), revealing that the PS4 exclusive has undergone some form of change since it was last seen during Tokyo Game Show back in September.
Here’s what Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono had to say on the matter:
“It looks like Deep Down will take just a little longer,” Ono said. “It also looks like some people are starting to ask ‘did the development come to a halt?’ but it’s nothing like that. We’re thinking about showing something that looks completely different from what previously shown, although it might be a while from now.”
It’s interesting to note that despite its show-stopping reveal back in 2013, Deep Down has been the subject of change.

Procedurally generated. Free-to-play, and online-only. Those are but a few of the interesting tidbits surrounding Capcom’s forthcoming PS4 exclusive, Deep Down. Having first roared onto the scene during Sony’s PlayStation 4 reveal event back in February, we’ve gradually learned a little more about the studio’s Dark Souls-esque dungeon crawler, and now a fresh bevy of screenshots have surfaced over on NeoGaf, which you can check out in the gallery below.
The most intriguing aspect of Deep Down, though, is the fact that the game takes places in New York in the year 2094, despite the medieval aesthetic. As you can see, some of the screenshots below hint towards the luxurious living space of the future. Crucially, Yoshinori Ono, one of Capcom’s lead developers, has stated that the game will allow players to touch ancient artefacts and relive historic events; thus bridging the gap between atmospheric dungeons and fancy urban apartments.

With the Tokyo Game Show in full swing, Capcom has released a new trailer for "Deep Down," their "Dungeons and Dragons" meets "Assassin's Creed" role-playing game.
As previously revealed, "Deep Down" takes place in New York at the turn of the 22nd century and features some sort of memory claptrap that transports intrepid would-be knights into dungeons lousy with bear-monsters and dragons, ripe for the crawling. The new trailer doesn't elaborate much on that premise, but it does show a hint of gameplay.
I know that being "inspired by 'Dark Souls'" is en vogue right now, but with that tight, over-the-shoulder camera, contextual combat -- stabbing a man-bear in, say, the leg instead of the gut -- and gothic grimdark aesthetic, the comparison seems apt.

During its Tgs conference, Sony laid out the plans for some upcoming next-gen titles that will release exclusively on PlayStation 4; one of which was Capcom’s dark fantasy RPG, Deep Down. Not only will the game feature a cacophony of randomly-generated monsters and locales – similarly to the Roguelike sub-genre – the studio confirmed that the title will be set in New York in the year 2094. No, you read that right.
Juxtaposing the brooding medieval aesthetic, the crux of the game will orbit around the player’s ability to interpret the memories of particular items. Billed as a “memory-reading RPG,” Capcom has stated that players will be able to interact with these artefacts and relieve past events; thus shedding some light on the temporal disparity.
It’s a curious concept, and one that positions Deep Down as a blend of the iconic Dark Souls and Ubisoft’s time-hopping Assassin’s Creed. Yoshinori Ono,...

For those of you wondering when (or if) "Ultra Street Fighter IV" will be making its way to the Wii U, Capcom producer Yoshinori Ono's got bad news for you.
We apologize that we don't have plan abou it at this moment. Rt @Snowman_2002: Will we see any Sf for other fans on the wii u?
— Yoshinori Ono (@Yoshi_OnoChin) August 16, 2013
That's a pretty clear indicator there that the fighting franchise is making no moves to Nintendo's console. Capcom's support for the Wii U hasn't been perhaps strong as it has been for rival platforms the PS3, Xbox 360, or even Nintendo's own 3Ds. In fact, to date, since the release of the Wii U last year, the only three Capcom titles to make it to the platform have been "Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate" and the HD update to "Resident Evil: Revelations."

Despite producer Yoshinori Ono's desire to see "Street Fighter V" come to light, Capcom has no immediate plans to start development and new statements from the House of Hadoken suggest we shouldn't hold our breath: a brand new "Street Fighter" game probably won't be out until 2018 at the earliest.
"Game developments a long and arduous process," producer Tomoaki Ayano told VG24/7. "If you look at the history of the series, it took six years to go from 'Street Fighter II' to 'Street Fighter III,' and nine years to go from 'Street Fighter III' to 'Street Fighter IV.'"
"Purely based on that it would probably take us until the year 2018 before 'Street Fighter V' comes out," he concluded.
Ayano doesn't mention the fact that the "Ex" and "Alpha" spin-offs filled in the gaps between " Street Fighter II" and "III," but his point stands:...

We haven't heard much about "Deep Down" since it was revealed at Sony's PlayStation 4 press conference in February, but the flagship game for Capcom's new Panta Rhei engine re-emerged during the publisher's Network Game Conference yesterday.
In typical teaser trailer fashion, the new video consists mostly of logos and quick cuts of a creepy manta ray-person-skeleton-demon. That's Videogame Industry Standard Operating Procedure, but there's info to gleaned here and gold in them grimdark fantasy hills.
For starters, "Deep Down" is sporting a Capcom Online Games logo, which -- to my knowledge -- is a new department. Japanese site 4Gamer attended the Network Game Conference and reports that "Deep Down" is an online role-playing game, though its unclear if this means it will have online elements or be a full-blown massively multiplayer game. It might just mean that "Deep Down" requires an internet connection to play.

After lighting up the stage at the Playstation 4 reveal event back in February, Capcom’s Deep Down resided into the shadows of mystery. Not much was known about the visually impressive game and the renown publisher remained mum on all things swords and sorcery. However, today the dormant beast has risen its head after the company announced that a playable demo of the RPG will be available at The Tokyo Game Show in September.
Here’s a brief teaser of the game, which was published on Deep Down’s official Japanese website:
By the looks of things, Capcom’s upcoming title has added a dash of Dark Souls and a sprinkling of Dragon’s Dogma into its brooding concoction. With hushed whispers and flashing one-shots of menacing demon-like creatures, it appears as though the game will lean towards horror as much as traditional RPG conventions. Plus, the forerunning Capcom logo...

When Capcom rolls out "Ultra Street Fighter IV" early next year, it'll come with a brace of tweaks, changes, and re-balancing measures. Don't worry about your favorite character, though -- Capcom's strategy is to raise the floor, not lower the ceiling.
"Our philosophy this time around has been to make everybody a threat," says Matt Dahlgren, Capcom's fighting game manager, in an interview with Siliconera.
"We don’t want to say these characters are the best in the game and nerf them -- that isn’t fair to the players that put a lot of time and effort in learning those tactics," Dahlgren continued. "The super powerful characters will have slight modifications, but our real intent is to take the lesser used characters and make them an equal threat as the top tier characters.”
One of those lesser-used characters is T-Hawk says Peter Rosas, Assistant Battle Director.

While "Street Fighter IV" producer Yoshinori Ono apparently doesn't have the budget or staff to make "Street Fighter V" for next-generation consoles, he would like to see more numbered versions of the series in the future.
"Personally, I don't want to stop 'Street Fighter''s main numbered series at 'IV,' he told 4Gamer (as translated by Siliconera). "Realistically speaking, developing a title for next-fen consoles requires a huge amount of staff members, and a large sum of money."
Ono also noted that a next-fen "Street Fighter" would also require a fair bit of start-up cash for players -- "The issue of money also applies to everyone else, as it'll be required to invest in a new console, game, and arcade stick," he said. "If you look at fighting games as a competitive sport, one might say the more players, the better. Going [free-to-play] lowers the hurdle of needing money to start,...

One of the most pervasive ideas in the games industry is that games with female characters don’t sell well. It’s a self-fulfilling and self-perpetuating idea: companies avoid publishing games with leading ladies, and then cite the lack of sales as a reason to keep avoiding those types of games.
When asked by Official Xbox Magazine in February if the “Gears of War” series could ever feature a woman Cog in the starring role, for example, Epic Games art director Chris Perna demurred: “That's certainly interesting but I don't know," he explained. "If you look at what sells, it's tough to justify something like that."
Dontnod Entertainment faced similar opposition when shopping their upcoming cyberpunk action game “Remember Me” -- which stars Nilin, an ex-combat operative and memory hunter -- to publishers. “We had some [companies] that said, ‘Well, we don’t want to publish it because...

One of the most impressive — and to be perfectly honest, the most unbelievable — videos shown during Sony’s PlayStation 4 debut event this past week was a trailer highlighting Capcom’s latest intellectual property, deep down (working title), and the new Panta Rhei engine that powers the game.
Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono (the lovable creator of the Street Fighter franchise) took to the stage during the event to briefly discus the Panta Rhei game engine that they are developing alongside the new PlayStation 4 fantasy/action game, deep down. Ono didn’t reveal much about what exactly the new game is, however, the trailer makes it appears as if its subject matter is similar to Dragon’s Dogma and Monster Hunter — or any other game that involves a group of sword wielding adventurers attacking a dragon.
Despite the inclusion of some minor Hud elements in the trailer, I’m skeptical of Capcom...

During their PlayStation 4 announcement press conference, Sony trotted out Yoshinori Ono -- the producer of the “Street Fighter IV” series -- let the proverbial cat of out Capcom’s bag.
The bulk of Ono’s presentation charted out Capcom’s progress over the years with regards to Sony’s various platforms: the 3D modeling possible on the original PlayStation, for example, paved the way for the “Resident Evil” series, and the Vita’s online capabilities were fundamental to the success of “Monster Hunter.” Explaining that the PlayStation 4 would usher in a “new era of entertainment,” Ono also announced Capcom’s brand new, proprietary Panta Rhei game engine.
Ono described Panta Rhei -- which, sidebar, is the best codename I think I’ve ever heard -- as “an evolutionary step from the Mt Framework engine,” which was used for almost every Capcom-developed game on the PS3 and Xbox...

A new console is the result of Sony's desire to match parity with gamer demands for connectivity and developer insight into the needs of a system.

As expected, Sony has officially announced their next generation console, the PlayStation 4, during this evening’s PlayStation event in New York City. The successor the PS3 is expected to launch sometime later this year.
The PlayStation 4 will have 8Gb of onboard GDDR5 unified memory, an X86 Cpu, 8 Cpu cores, 2 teraflops computational performance, a “supercharged PC architecture”, and a local hard drive. Sony stated that the PS4′s technology will focus on customer personalization, and will be extremely easy to develop for. Capcom left “a late Christmas present” underneath our collective trees yesterday, in the form of a new gameplay trailer for Dontnod Entertainment’s Remember Me.
Here, we see intrepid memory hunter Nilin stalking Neo-Paris’ Latin Quarter, looking to pull some security codes out of her unsuspecting mark’s brain. The trailer seems to track this particular mission pretty closely -- we see Nilin climbing a building, fighting some guards, evading a helicopter, and eventually coming face-to-face with Kid Xmas.
The tussle with Kid Xmas takes place inside some sort of slapped together arena, complete with a stylized fight card. It’s all a bit on the nose, but the extra bit of camp reminds me of games like Killer 7 and Vanquish.
When Remember Me was announced at Gdc Europe over the summer, publisher Capcom sent Street Fighter veteran Yoshinori Ono to advise the fledgling Dontnod with the game’s melee combat.

Capcom has finally announced that they will return to the Darkstalkers franchise, with the release of Darkstalkers Resurrection on Xbox Live Arcade and the PlayStation Network early next year.
Resurrection is not exactly the next entry into the classic fighting series, but is instead a package containing re-developed versions of Night Warriors: Darkstalkers Revenge and Darkstalkers 3. Iron Galaxy, the studio behind Marvel Vs. Capcom: Origins, is handling development on the game and is planning to make this much more than a simple re-release of the original titles.
Both games in Darkstalkers Resurrection will include; Ggpo-enabled online game play, HD graphical filtering with several viewing options, replay sharing, Spectator Mode, in-game Achievements/Trophies , Challenge/Tutorial Mode, and unlockable concept artwork/videos.
Yoshinori Ono has often hinted to fans that he would like to return to Darkstalkers, and Capcom seems to be positioning Resurrection as the “first step” towards achieving that goal.

Responding to fans on the Capcom-Unity boards, Capcom Corporate Office Chris Svensson confirmed that we shouldn't be looking for any new fighting games from the studio this winter:
And I can say there are no planned releases for fighting titles in the remainder of the calendar year. MvC Orgins was the last fighting game release for this particular year on any platform. Beyond that, I'm not able to comment about announcements of fighting games on any platforms at this time. Sorry.
While that doesn't seem like a huge deal--that a publisher isn't making any sudden announcements in the last quarter of the year--Capcom has been pretty nuts with the digital re-releases this year along with their retail releases. So anyone hoping for something Darksiders-related will have to wait and hope for Yoshinori Ono's big announcement about his next project during New York Comic-Con next week.

Last week I gave you a glimpse inside of Capcom's massive celebration of 25 years of quarter circle punches with the newly-released Street Fighter 25th Anniversary Collection. And after cracking this well-crafted collector's box open that Capcom sent along for the Xbox 360, I'm pretty impressed with this tribute to the fighting series.
But let's take a deeper look at the set together and see what Capcom has in store for those of you who decide to pick up this massive set.
Opening the box/Certified
The first thing you'll notice when you pull the box out of its paper slipcover and plastic wrapping is the texture: the exterior is velvety and soft, with metal corners to prevent the case from getting excessively dinged up during transit. Turn it with the logo facing you, and then simply tilt the lid open. While I appreciate that Capcom didn't want to break the smooth...

The Street Fighter IV producer, Capcom veteran, and Blanka enthusiast Yoshinori Ono heads to Taiwan to celebrate the opening of a new studio with pretty cosplay ladies and cake.
More images from Ono's birthday to-do after the jump.
Ono took to Twitter last night to post a series of images from his birthday celebration and the opening of the new Taipei Capcom studio. While Ono reports that he didn't get any presents this year from the Capcom team, he did get to ring in another year of making games with a trio of models dressed as Chun-Li, Jill Valentine, and Sakura.
You can see Ono's photos (which include his ever-present Blanka toy and a way-larger-than-scale Mega Man costume) below:

Capcom's celebration of 25 years of Street Fighter along with demos of their upcoming releases will highlight their presence at this week's convention.
Besides coming loaded for bear with a bunch of things to sell you this week (expensive, sometimes exclusive things), Capcom will also be talking about some of their games. Most notably, you fight fans out there better hit the Thursday Street Fighter 25th Anniversary panel. This one is in room 6Bcf, and if my sleep-deprived memory serves, while it has a decent amount of space, expect it to get packed pretty quickly nonetheless.
Beyond the Street Fighter love, Lost Planet 3, DmC, and Resident Evil 6 will get shown off if you haven't had a chance to see them in action in person. Now's your chance to ask the devs whatever questions you might have about each release (personally, I'm going to go off-topic and demand that we see an...

Street Fighter X Tekken producer Yoshinori Ono has stepped down from his position while he recovers from illness. Ono, whose first notable Capcom project was Dino Crisis 2 in 2000, was rushed to hospital while on the Asian leg of a promotional tour for the crossover fighting game. Capcom confirmed that the executive's physical condition "heavily deteriorated" and that he would "not be performing work-related affairs for a while". Speaking to fans on Twitter, Ono announced that another person would be in charge of the Street Fighter franchise, but that he would continue to support it. "I'll refrain from work for current job for a while. Another person in charge of Sf series for a while. Of course I'll constant (more)...
