This Sunday, musical artist Tyler Hilton stars in a CBS original holiday film, When Christmas Was Young, with Fear the Walking Dead star Karen David.
Luke Dawson's career is in danger, and he can only save it by getting the recording rights to a Christmas ballad for his only client, Lindsay Wyatt. The problem is the original singer, Melody, is immune to his cocky charm.
Can Melody show Luke the true meaning of Christmas, or will he teach her to believe in her dreams again?
We chatted with Tyler about the appeal of this holiday film, working with Karen, and his favorite holiday traditions.
Hi Tyler. I loved your movie. One of the popular themes for Holiday films this year was a singer creating a hit song and someone visiting a small town to realize the true meaning of Christmas. Why do you think this theme resonates with viewers?...

This Sunday, Fear the Walking Dead star Karen David stars with Tyler Hilton in a CBS original holiday film When Christmas Was Young. Sheryl Crow wrote the title song, and Karen sang it in the movie.
Luke Dawson's (Tyler Hilton) career is in danger, and he can only save his job if he can secure the rights to a homey Christmas ballad Melody sang years ago.
The problem is that Melody is a single mom who left her musical dreams behind. Soon, Melody shows Luke the true meaning of Christmas, and he helps her open up her heart.
We chatted with Karen about the movie, collaborating with Sheryl and her favorite holiday traditions.
Hi, Karen. I've been a big fan of yours from some of your other stuff. You have an impressive acting resume in television and film, but this is your first holiday film. What appealed to you about playing Melody Douglass?...

She directs her parents in cute scenes she dreams up, chats away “like a grown-up” and has showbiz in her genes, but there’s one thing Tyler Hilton and Megan Park’s daughter Winnie wants no part of — her father’s singing!
As the toddler marks her 3rd birthday on Dec. 20, she has clearly found her voice and she’s hilariously using it to shut down her dad’s.
“She hates when I sing,” Hilton tells Et Canada ahead of his CBS movie “When Christmas Was Young”, premiering Dec. 18. “When she was a baby, I sang all the time and she couldn’t tell me not to, but now she’s definitely not into it. Even if I hit a note on the piano while she’s playing with toys, she goes, ‘No, no, no!’ When I play music, I tune everyone out, so maybe she picks up on that...

The network brought back original holiday movies in 2021 with “Christmas Takes Flight” and “A Christmas Proposal” — the first time CBS re-entered the space in nine years.

Jared Leto and Darren Aronofsky are teaming for a film package called “Adrift” that is based on a short story by the writer of “The Ring.” Jason Blum will produce the film through his Blumhouse Productions.
“Adrift” is a reunion between Leto and Aronofsky, who previously worked together on Aronofsky’s 2000 cult film “Requiem for a Dream.” The new film will star Leto and be directed by Aronofsky based on the story of the same name by Koji Suzuki.
The film is set in the dead calm of the open sea where a fishing boat discovers an abandoned yacht with a strange distress call. A deckhand agrees to take lone control of it while it’s towed into port, but he soon discovers why the rest of his more experienced crew members call it a “Ghost Ship.”

'The Lazarus Effect' box office: Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass horror movie arrives comatose (photo: Olivia Wilde in 'The Lazarus Effect') (See previous post: "'Focus': Will Smith Has One of Worst Opening Weekends of His Career.") Despite recent news that human head transplants are a mere two years away, the Mark Duplass-Olivia Wilde horror movie The Lazarus Effect – about bringing the dead back to life (as if world overpopulation weren't already a problem) – grossed $10.6 million from 2,666 U.S. and Canada venues on opening weekend, Feb. 27-March 1, 2015, according to studio estimates found at Box Office Mojo. The Relativity Studios-distributed low-budget horror flick had earned an estimated $3.8 million on opening-day Friday, including $350,000 from Thursday night screenings. Last week, box-office prognosticators had been expecting an opening between $12-$14 million. That was adjusted downward to $10 million or whereabouts after the film's disappointing Friday debut. Relativity released their new horror/thriller film, "The Lazarus Effect," into theaters this weekend, and all the top, major critics have submitted their reviews. It turns out that most of them didn't like this one as it only garnered up a small 33 score out of a possible 100 across 24 reviews at the Metacritic.com site. The film stars: Sarah Bolger, Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Evan Peters and Donald Glover. We've posted some blurbs from a couple of the critics, below. James Rocchi at TheWrap, gave it a great 80 score, stating: "The Lazarus Effect is a smart, unsubtle chiller that should leave even a dedicated horror fan shaken and spooked from its opening scene’s revelations to its final scene’s implications." Gary Goldstein over at the Los Angeles Times, gave it a solid 70 score. He stated: " Director David Gelb, switching gears from his fine 2011 documentary "Jiro Dreams of Sushi," keeps the...

Death Becomes Her: Gelb’s B-Grade Horror Haunted By Its Own Ideas
With its absurd title, which recalls an era of enjoyable B-grade Sci-Fi/horror films from decades past, The Lazarus Effect seems disappointingly inclined to revel in a shallow pool of absurd, preternatural devices. Though its third act regression into silliness may seem wholly unsurprising to a majority of its core audience, the pedigree of talent both in front of and behind the camera would seem to dictate otherwise. At its outset, there’s a decent degree of mounting dread, even as we expect the consequences of these medical students’ silly actions to quickly reign a terrible wrath upon their ambitious, presumptuous brains. The title, referencing a notable character from the Bible who literally comes back from the dead, is an obvious giveaway to those familiar with the allusion, but it very meekly pits its warring scientific and...

The horror lover inside of me wants to defend The Lazarus Effect against other mainstream failures, but the critic in me can’t let that happen. It’s a mess, but not on the catastrophic level of so many other generically churned-out teenage slashers (like Ouija or The Pyramid).
Director David Gelb strives to fashion together something more, something that blends the conflicting ideologies of religion and science in a heavyweight debate, but scribes Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater didn’t get that memo. The talents of Gelb are outweighed by the overbearing redundancy of Dawson and Slater’s nostalgically horrendous script, as the fires of Horror Film Hell engulf yet another misguided victim. Blumhouse is so close to something special with The Lazarus Effect, but unfortunately, it’s still oh-so-far from heavenly.

Chicago – Psychological horror films are the best tweaks, because they remind us of our fears, and where are fears are rooted. The strange combination of science, religion and a blockbuster performance by Olivia Wilde creates an atmosphere of dread and weirdness in “The Lazarus Effect.”
Rating: 4.5/5.0
This is also a bit of a spoof, as director David Geib adds the appropriate screaming soundtrack, and the characters – all scientists – are the usual horror film collection of goofballs and naysayers. But the use of death as a scientific phenomenon that could possibly be reversed, is as intriguing as the day Dr. Frankenstein opened his lab. There is also a quick side trip on the question of afterlife and religion, which consecrates a peculiar recurring scene, and it’s frighteningly appropriate to the consequence of the story. Is there stiff acting, a demonic dog and quality kills? Hells yes!

Let's just assume that if you are a member of a scientific team in a horror film, things are going to end very, very badly for you. And if the research you're doing involves life after death or, even worse, the re-animation of dead things, then the odds you die in a horrible manner increase exponentially. Unfortunately, no one warned the characters in David Gelb's "The Lazarus Effect," and the results are understandably grim. There is an art to pulling off one of these microbudget horror films set in a very limited space, and there is an efficiency to the script by Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater. They quickly establish the team, led by Frank (Mark Duplass) and Zoe (Olivia Wilde), who are working on a drug treatment that will allow for the successful revival of someone who has been dead with less chance of brain damage from oxygen loss.

Imagine if you had the power to bring a loved one back from the dead. But as a result of this resurrection, the person brought back to life is not quite the same as they were before their demise. The “playing God” formula has been around from the original Frankenstein to Pet Sematary and Re-animator but it’s likely never been done with less style, imagination, or coherence than the new horror/sci-fi dud The Lazarus Effect.
“This pig smells like shit” is the profound opening line of The Lazarus Effect, which centers on Frank (Mark Duplass) and Zoe (Olivia Wilde), an engaged pair of university research scientists who have achieved the impossible—bringing the dead, foul-smelling Porky back to life! After another successful test run on a recently deceased pooch, Frank, Zoe, and their team (Donald Glover, Sarah Bolger and Evan Peters) are ready to unveil their breakthrough to the world.

The Lazarus Effect
Written by Luke Dawson & Jeremy Slater
Directed by David Gelb
USA, 2015
It’s easy to be disillusioned by bland, scare-free horror films like The Lazarus Effect. Of course, not every horror film makes Ouija look like The Exorcist, but perhaps we can use this as a learning exercise. Rather than cursing the darkness, let’s light a little candle and look at “Three Things We Can Learn from The Lazarus Effect.”
1.) Bringing things back from the dead is no big thing.
Most horror films exist in the ‘real world’ for the express purpose of scaring us with supernatural or unusual phenomena. Since dealing with serial killers or zombies isn’t an everyday occurrence for most folks, the prospect of suddenly facing one is disconcerting. Apparently, this shock factor doesn’t extend to the realm of resurrection, however.
The Lazarus Effect treats re-animation like a walk in the park.

I can't say The Lazarus Effect doesn't get straight to the point as this "back from the dead" thriller runs only 83 minutes and even less than that if you don't count the credits. But while it doesn't necessarily waste much time getting into the thick of things and features a relatively notable cast, it doesn't really offer anything all that new and strangely turns into something of a lackluster, nightmare vision of Luc Besson's Lucy. I swear, I need to learn how to use all 100% of my brain at once, the possibilities are endless! The story centers on a group of researchers who stumble on a serum with the potential to bring the dead back to life. However, during a test trial something goes wrong and one of the lead researchers, Zoe (Olivia Wilde), is electrocuted and dies. Her fiancee and co-lead on the project, Frank (Mark Duplass), does the obvious.

The makers of The Lazarus Effect, an uninspired horror film about modern-day mad scientists, do nothing noteworthy with their heady what-if premise: What do you see right before you die, and what would happen if you came back from the dead?
Screenwriters Luke Dawson and Jeremy Slater ask and mostly answer those promising central questions within their film's first 40 minutes. At that point, The Lazarus Effect ditches its ambitions as a Frankenstein-like warning about gnostic hubris and becomes a quarter-assed slasher film starring Olivia Wilde as an undead psychic murderer who flies around and crushes things with her mind.

Wayward Pines: "Based on the best-selling novel, “Pines,” by Blake Crouch, and brought to life by suspenseful storyteller M. Secret Service agent Ethan Burke (Academy Award nominee Matt Dillon, “Crash,” “City of Ghosts”) arrives in the bucolic town of Wayward Pines, ID, on a mission to find two missing federal agents. But instead of answers, Ethan’s investigation only turns up more questions.

Shortly after the new year, we caught our first glimpse at the new supernatural thriller The Lazarus Effect. In what is essentially a remake of Flatliners, the story follows Olivia Wilde as Zoe, a medical student working on an experiment to regenerate dead tissue. But when she ends up in a fatal accident in the hospital, her boyfriend (Mark Duplass) decides to use their work in an attempt to bring her back from the dead. But something is wrong, and Zoe isn't who she used to be. It's your run of the mill possession thriller, with Wilde taking down her colleagues one by one. Can Duplass bring her back from the darkness? Watch! Here's the new trailer for David Gelb's The Lazarus Effect from Yahoo: You can still watch the first trailer for The Lazaurus Effect right here. Reanimating the dead may seem unnatural and downright scary to someone who’s watched the human race become dinner for the living dead in countless zombie movies. For a group of medical students in The Lazarus Effect, though, reversing death could lead to a new understanding of life, though as the second trailer for the upcoming horror film shows, jumping into uncharted scientific territory can lead to fatal test results.

While I may have originally overlooked the forthcoming horror film The Lazarus Effect as just another retread of an earlier and, in some cases, superior movie (say Pet Semetary or Flatliners), the pedigree of the people involved with The Lazarus Effect and the film’s first trailer makes me think this film can rise above my fanboy concerns.
Before we get to the trailer, you should be warned that it reveals what looks like the entirety of the movie’s plot (though I’m thinking there’s some big third act reveals that are only hinted at in the trailer). In the film, a group of medical students is trying to perfect a serum that reanimates dead tissue (a la Re-Animator) and have been experimenting on dogs. Then, one day, the process suddenly works and it appears as though they have made a tremendous breakthrough. However, something has gone wrong...

Reanimating the dead may seem unnatural and downright scary to someone who’s watched the human race become dinner for the living dead in countless zombie movies. For a group of medical students in The Lazarus Effect, though, reversing death could lead to a new understanding of life. But as evidenced in the film’s first trailer, scientific discoveries can come with painful sacrifices.
A Blumhouse Productions film from Relativity Studios, The Lazarus Effect was directed by David Gelb (Jiro Dreams of Sushi) off a screenplay by Luke Dawson (2008’s Shutter) and Jeremy Slater (The Fantastic Four reboot). The film follows “a group of medical students who discover a way to bring dead patients back to life”, and it stars Mark Duplass, Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover, Evan Peters and Sarah Bolger.

Olivia Wilde has honed her skills as a dramatic and comic actress over the years, appearing in such diverse projects as Rush, Drinking Buddies, Tron: Legacy and The Change-Up, but she’ll be adding a new genre to her resume this February with low-budget frightener The Lazarus Effect. In the first trailer for the Jason Blum-produced pic, which you can check out below, Wilde makes a strong case for why we should just leave all the menacing and murderous roles in horror films to her from now on.
Mark Duplass, Donald Glover, Evan Peters and Sarah Bolger also star in the flick, about a group of researchers who, while mapping the brain in a series of experiments that explore life after death, have an accident that results in the death of one of their own (Wilde). Recently we've seen Olivia Wilde in the likes of Her, Rush and The Incredible Burt Wonderstone. But if you were thinking that what's been long missing from her CV is a horror thriller, look no further than this new trailer for The Lazarus Effect. Wilde dies and comes back to life again. For science!Wilde stars with Mark Duplass, Donald Glover and Evan Peters as one of a group of scientists investigating the reanimation of dead tissue. Sadly an electrical accident finishes her off mid-experiment, leading her colleagues to continue their work on Wilde herself. But when she comes back she's not quite the same as when she left.Bits of Flatliners and The Eye in that set-up, but hopefully the full movie will effectively tread its own path. David Gelb (the rather different Jiro Dreams Of Sushi) is the director; Luke Dawson (Shutter) and Jeremy Slater (the new Fantastic...

If you heard that Olivia Wilde, Donald Glover (formerly of Community), and Mark Duplass were starring in a film together, you might expect something along the lines of a dramedy. But on the contrary, an upcoming movie starring all three actors looks to be brimming with wide-eyed horror, as evidenced in the first image from The Lazarus Effect, which sounds a bit like a mash-up of Re-Animator and Flatliners.
EW debuted the first look at The Lazarus Effect, which features Olivia Wilde holding a surgical tool to her head while her super-dilated eyes glare above a slight—perhaps even sinister—smile.

There’s a potentially clever joke in saying that Sleeping Beauty of Once Upon A Time will be appearing in a movie called Reawakening, but let’s move past it, shall we? Sarah Bolger of Once Upon A Time and The Tudors has joined the cast of Reawakening, which keeps sounding better and better. Bolger joins Mark Duplass, Donald Glover, Evan Peters and Olivia Wilde in the film, which is coming from Jiro Dreams Of Sushi director David Gelb.
The script comes from Jeremy Slater and Luke Dawson and sounds like a Frankensteinian tale:
The story follows a team of research students that discovers the secret to bringing subjects back from the dead — however, their actions result in a series of sinister consequences.

You might think that dealing with weird supernatural events in The Spiderwick Chronicles, The Moth Diaries and TV’s Once Upon A Time would teach Sarah Bolger not to go playing with the laws of nature.
