- He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School in Brooklyn, New York; studied at Wittenberg College in Ohio before he transferred to Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York where he played junior varsity football and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in English. He coached at Adelphi University in Long Island, New York and then in the United States Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia.
- At 24 years old, he was hired by the Baltimore Colts of the National Football League. He was an assistant in the personnel department at the Citadel and at University of Southern California in Los Angeles. He returned to the Professional Leagues in 1960 in the inaugural American Football League season. He coached for the Los Angeles Chargers in 1960 before they moved to San Diego in 1961. He was hired by the Los Angeles Raiders in 1966 and left in April 1966. In April 1966, he was appointed Commissioner of the American Football League. He became principal owner of the Oakland Raiders in 2005.
- He is survived by his wife, Carol Segal Davis, and son, (Mark Davis).
- Mr. Davis resided for many years with his family in Piedmont, California, where he died in October, 2011.
- Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1992.
- Inducted into the International Jewish Sports Hall of Fame in 2014.
- At the time of his death, his estimated net worth was $500 million.
