Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster tournament is back. While studios during Covid wildly embraced the theatrical day-and-date model when cinemas were closed, they soon realized there’s nothing more profitable than a theatrical release and the downstreams that come with it. If anything, theatrical is the advertisement for a movie’s longevity in subsequent home entertainment windows. Entering the conversation in 2023 were the streamers, such as Apple, who have also realized the necessity of theatrical to eventize their movies. The financial data pulled together here for Deadline’s Most Valuable Blockbuster Tournament is culled by seasoned and trusted sources.

This post contains spoilers for "Goosebumps" episodes 9 and 10.
Readers beware, you're in for a scare ... just kidding. It's an interview. But! It is related to the new Hulu and Disney+ adaptation of "Goosebumps," based on the beloved young-adult horror series of the same name from R.L. Stine. In just 10 episodes, the new "Goosebumps" series is a triumph of horror, comedy, and some well-placed nostalgia -- a series that speaks to both the generation that grew up begging parents to buy them the books from the Scholastic Book Fair and raced home to watch new episodes of the TV show after school (It's me. Hi!), as well as new viewers getting into the "Goosebumps" universe for the first time. When I reviewed the new show, I had only been given the first eight episodes, which felt like its own contained season. But with two more episodes unseen, it was a sign...

The monstrous Goosebumps handle has dripped and oozed its green-tinged ichor for the past three decades, seeping into the imaginations of the countless kids who dared traverse the pages of R.L. Stine’s paperback terrors. In time the words on the page leapt onto the screen and eventually into theaters, transforming playfully frightful prose into equally gleeful and similarly spooky visual splendor, solidifying the multi-generational Goosebumps legacy firmly in the gateway horror zeitgeist.
And now Goosebumps is back again. A departure from its anthology television roots and infused with more menace and horror than ever before, the series emerges ready to delight and terrify a new audience of adolescent thrill-seekers. Following a group of five teenagers as they navigate inherited trauma, haunted objects and one quite infamous ventriloquist dummy, this fresh iteration of R.L. Stine’s classic world of fun and fear is an engaging, long-form tale unlike any...

“Goosebumps” has not suffered from a lack of adaptations in the decades since R.L. Stine’s YA series of novels first terrorized millennials. In addition to the anthology series that ran for four seasons in the mid-’90s, a 2015 film adaptation starring Jack Black and directed by Rob Letterman also earned a standalone sequel in 2018. Now, Slappy the Dummy, haunted cameras, evil Halloween masks and sinister cuckoo clocks are all back with the Disney+ and Hulu “Goosebumps” series, which takes on a decidedly darker tone.
Created by Letterman and Nicholas Stoller (“Neighbors”), the serialized approach encompasses multiple Stine novels as a group of high schoolers are terrorized by the vengeful ghost of a teen who died in 1993 — accidentally, at the hands of their parents. The resulting show manages to marry genuine scares with the horrors of high school and that scratchy, itchy feeling that comes with the dawning realization that...

R. L. Stine’s spine-chilling “Goosebumps” book series holds a great deal of nostalgia and memorable spooks for ’90s kids and beyond, including executive producers Pavun Shetty and Conor Welch, who were determined to “elevate” the beloved novels with modern stories for a new generation through the new Disney+ and Hulu series.

Justin Long has had an excellent variety of roles throughout his career.
He's been in horrors, comedies, and everything in between.
The actor plays Nathan Bratt on the Disney+/Hulu reboot of Goosebumps.
In the first trailer, Nathan finds himself possessed by a spirit that may or may not be tied to the overarching mystery of the new series.

The brand new “Goosebumps” television series from Disney+ and Hulu will premiere on October 13, and now the show’s full official trailer has arrived this afternoon.
The two-minute trailer features callbacks to several classic Goosebumps tales, including “Welcome to Dead House,” “Say Cheese and Die!” and “The Cuckoo Clock of Doom,” and it also features an appearance from the iconic Slappy doll. Like the two live action movies we got in recent years, however, it looks like the series will not be directly adapting any of the books.
Watch the “Goosebumps” official trailer below!
Disney previews in the official press details, “The new series draws on elements from five of the most popular middle grade books including Say Cheese and Die!, The Haunted Mask, The Cuckoo Clock of Doom, Go Eat Worms! and Night of the Living Dummy.”

The series also stars Justin Long — who becomes possessed by a dark entity around the 40-second mark of the trailer — and Rachael Harris. When it comes to the road to blockbuster glory, some projects are willed, some happen instantaneously, while others go through a long development hell. That’s just what happens when you’re working toward what’s hopefully a billion-grossing title.
In the case of Mattel’s Barbie, it was a 14-year journey that began at Universal. It stands to reason that the toy company would be fiercely protective about a feature take on its 64-year-old doll that generates a reported $3 billion annually in revenue. The product first conceived as America’s Sweetheart has evolved with changing times, switching up her stereotypes and outfits from prom queen to flight attendant to Mad Men secretary to astronaut. A doll that was deemed iconic in the 1970s-era of pinups like Loni Anderson and Farrah Fawcett endured a backlash when critics deemed her an inappropriate role model for young girls. This, despite Mattel pushing...

Honest to blog, there’s a universe where Diablo Cody wrote a script for “Barbie.”
Long before Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie” was even thought possible, Cody was hired to rewrite a potential Barbie movie for Sony. “Diablo’s unconventionality is just what Barbie needs,” producer Walter Parkes said in 2015. “It signals we’re going for a legitimately contemporary tone. We’re bringing her on because she had great ideas, but even more importantly, she truly loves Barbie.”
But it didn’t take long for Cody, an Oscar winner for “Juno,” to exit the project. Later that same year, the trades reported Sony had brought together three writers, including Hilary Winston, to work on separate drafts of the Barbie film. It was Winston’s work that apparently attracted Amy Schumer to star, although when her casting was announced in 2016, it was revealed Schumer and her sister Kim Caramele planned on doing...

ABC’s ratings-challenged Happy Endings created a cult following thanks to its relatable stories about a group of friends in their late 20s and early 30s. While the comedy helped to launch the careers of stars Eliza Coupe (Jane), Elisha Cuthbert (Alex), Zachary Knighton (Dave), Adam Pally (Max), Damon Wayans Jr. (Brad) and Casey Wilson (Penny), behind the scenes, the Sony-produced series created by David Caspe was effectively its own showrunner training program. As Rutherford Falls creator Sierra Teller Ornelas revealed in a recent Twitter thread, Happy Endings had 23 writers over its three seasons, with an incredible 21 — including assistants — becoming showrunners.
During this week’s TV’s Top 5 podcast, hosts Lesley Goldberg and Daniel Fienberg reunite 14 of the Happy Endings writers to build off Ornelas’ thread and discuss, in light of the ongoing Writers Guild strike, the benefits of having a traditional writers rooms, why having writers on set...

A few years before Greta Gerwig and Margot Robbie joined forces for the highly anticipated live-action Barbie movie, Amy Schumer was cast to play the titular role but she dropped out in 2017, citing “scheduling conflicts.” In a recent appearance on Watch What Happens: Live, Schumer revealed that her departure was actually due to “creative differences.”

We almost got a very different version of Barbie than Greta Gerwig’s sugar-sweet spectacle of Margot Robbie’s Barbie and Ryan Gosling’s Ken that will hit theaters on July 21. For one, Amy Schumer was almost the actress who would have brought the doll to life on-screen, and Hilary Winston was leading the screenplay, rather than Noah Baumbach and Gerwig, who stepped in when that initial version was scrapped. From Schumer’s perspective, that was all for the best — the original just wasn’t “feminist and cool” enough.

Long before Margot Robbie boarded the “Barbie” movie and got Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach to write the screenplay, it was Amy Schumer who was set to headline the project. Back in 2016, Sony Pictures had the rights to “Barbie” and cast Schumer to star in a movie based on an original idea and screenplay by Hilary Winston. Schumer and her sister, Kim Caramele, planned rewrites, but the comedian exited the movie less than a year later.

“People generally hear ‘Barbie’ and think, ‘I know what that movie is going to be,’ and then they hear that Greta Gerwig is writing and directing it, and they’re like, ’Oh, well, maybe I don’t,’” Robbie said.
This will be Gerwig’s third feature film following her debut, “Lady Bird,” and her adaptation of “Little Women,...

Fans of the Alec Baldwin-voiced “Boss Baby” are going to have to wait a little longer to get their fix, as the animated comedy has been moved from its planned March 26 release date to Sept. 17, 2021.
Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation announced today that the animated sequel, “The Boss Baby: Family Business,” would move from spring to fall. Released in 2017, the original “Boss Baby” took in more than $520 million at the worldwide box office and was nominated for an Academy Award for best animated feature. The sequel follows the Templeton Brothers, Tim (voiced by James Marsden) and little brother Ted, who are now all grown up and have grown apart. Jeff Goldblum, Eva Longoria and...

Universal and DreamWorks Animation have tweaked their 2021 release schedule, moving the sequel The Boss Baby: Family Business from March to September. The shift to the new release date, September 17, had been the spot for Dwa’s The Bad Guys, which is unset for now and will get a 2022 release. Universal made the announcement Monday.
Boss Baby 2 had been set for a March 26, 2021 release but most theatrical releases are in flux owing to the coronavirus pandemic that has decimated the domestic exhibition business, which as of now has only 60% of its screens in operation in the U.S. and Canada — and none in the key Los Angeles and New York City markets.
Tom McGrath returns to direct the second installment of the Boss Baby franchise; the first pic grossed more than $500 million worldwide and earned an Animated Feature Oscar nomination. Alec Baldwin also returns as the lead voice for the new...

Sitcom characters very rarely come off of the page fully formed. Many classic (and not-so-classic) network sitcoms rely on time as an ally. Time spent with characters allows for not only an audience to get a better sense of them but also for the writers and actors to do so as well.
Community was no exception. Each of the ensemble cast’s seven main characters (and tertiary characters like Ben Chang and Dean Craig Pelton) arrived in the pilot fundamentally unfinished. And each of them evolved over time, in some cases sharpening creator Dan Harmon and the writing staff’s original assumptions or defying them. No character, however, changed more from conception to execution over time than Britta Perry as played by Gillian Jacobs.
Originally, Harmon designed Britta Perry simply as a romantic foil to series lead Jeff Winger. When Community first premiered in 2009, The Office was entering its sixth...
