Neon is launching sales this week at AFM to the It Follows sequel, They Follow. Filmmaker David Robert Mitchell is back to helm and write, with Maika Monroe reprising her role as Jay Height.
A 2024 production start is being eyed.
Neon will co-produce the film alongside Good Fear Content. Mitchell serves as a producer with Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content and the original producers of It Follows — David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green and Laura Smith.
Neon CEO originally handled It Follows at Radius, which was a cult theatrical pic grossing $15M stateside in 2014.
Mitchell broke into the film industry with the 2010 coming-of-age drama The Myth of the American Sleepover, which had its world premiere at South by Southwest. It Follows, his second pic, earned a Critics Choice Awards nomination for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie. In 2018, he wrote, produced and directed black comedy/mystery Under the Silver Lake...

The first trailer for What Happens Later makes it clear the title isn’t supposed to have a question mark at the end. Meg Ryan, a queen of romantic comedies back when rom-coms were smiled upon by audiences and studios, returns to the genre as co-writer, director, and star, teaming with David Duchovny to tell the story of a former couple who find themselves stuck together in an airport.
“It has a relationship to movies from the ’40s, like Bringing Up Baby, in terms of the banter and the rhythm of things and a lot of that era of filmmaking,” explained Ryan in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “Nora Ephron used to say about rom-coms that they were really a secretly incredible delivery system to comment on the times, and we do that in this movie.”

The Los Angeles Film Festival starts June 14 with Colin Trevorrow’s “The Book of Henry” as its opening-night film, but in its 23rd year the festival still hasn’t found its proper place on the film calendar.
Produced by Film Independent, Laff has always been something of a feathered fish. Some of this stems from its summer timeframe: It arrives at mid-year, more than two months before new awards contenders reveal themselves at Telluride and long after acquisitions festivals like Toronto and Sundance have done their work (with support from SXSW and Tribeca that follow) .
Laff has tried to make lemons into organic lemonade: Under the direction of recently departed Stephanie Allain, the Laff moved away from the quality international fare favored by former programmer David Ansen to embrace its indie roots and chase world premieres from under-represented demographics.
It’s a worthy-minded strategy, but the result was a lineup...

Todd Haynes' "Carol" is shaping up to be the movie to beat this awards season. Based on Patricia Highsmith's The Price of Salt, the romantic drama stars Cate Blanchett as an older, married woman who is developing some strong feelings towards a seasonal shopgirl played by Rooney Mara. And the actresses may have to prepare their acceptance speeches! "Carol" leads the pack of nominees for the 31st Independent Spirit Awards!
I'm also very happy that "Tangerine" by Sean Baker received 4 nods for Best Feature, Director, Female Lead (Kitana Kiki Rodriguez), and Supporting Female for Mya Taylor. shot mostly on iPhone, this small-budget wonder is truly what the Independent Spirit is all about!
Some of my few gripes are not a whole lot of love for the fantastic "Room" (just screenplay, female lead for Brie Larson, and editing -- what about the awesome child actor Jason Tremblay?), and that...

In its 31st year, the Film Independent Spirt Awards showcase the best that modest (and, occasionally, lower budget) filmmaking has to offer annually. This year, it’s little surprise the the stellar Carol is leading the pack with six nominations, while Spotlight and Beasts of No Nation are close behind with five each. On the actual smaller scale of productions, the iPhone-shot drama Tangerine picked up a heft four nominations, a film that, alongside Anomalisa and the aforementioned titles, rounds out their Best Feature category.

The middle of Spring actually means a new selection of summer blockbusters to look forward to, and with a ton of big-budget films slated to come out within the next few months and beyond, the summer of 2015 looks like one to remember.
From the new Mad Max (which is already on our end-of -year top ten list event though we haven’t yet seen it) to Avengers, Poltergeists, male strippers, talking teddy bears, and a reboot of the Jurassic Park franchise, this summer’s trips to the theaters will be jam-packed with sequels and new tales. From May 1st right through to the end of August, some of the movies on our list could wind up on year-end “best of” lists or even receive some Oscar talk by December.
Grab your calendar, because Wamg has a rundown of this summer’s films we’re most excited about, so check them out below!

The only question is, why did it take so long? Cannes horror hit "It Follows," David Robert Mitchell's second Cannes Critics' Week entry after "The Myth of the American Sleepover," has been scooped up by RADiUS, the boutique label from the Weinstein Company dedicated to both multi-platform VOD and theatrical distribution, beating out several companies chasing U.S. rights. (RADiUS also bought "When Animals Dream" out of Critics' Week, and took "Blue Ruin" out of the Cannes selection last year.) RADiUS plans to release the dreamy Detroit-set horror film in the first quarter of 2015. Financed by Animal Kingdom and Northern Lights, "It Follows" was produced by Rebecca Green, Laura D. Smith, Mitchell, David Kaplan and Erik Rommesmo. Mitchell assembled a young cast including breakout Maika Monroe, Keir Gilchrist and Daniel Zovatto. The film features an ominous electronic score by Disasterpeace. "American horror has an extraordinary new voice in David Robert Mitchell,...
