Remakes are the talk of the town, especially in the Disney+ Hotstar universe. On one hand, The Night Manager was a huge success, while The Trial, the remake of the CBS drama The Good Wife, did not receive much appreciation because of the unsatisfactory writing and terrible understanding of the nuances from the original show. The third show in line after these two remakes is Karmma Calling, an official adaptation of the ABC show Revenge. The Hindi remake was created by Ruchi Narain and released on January 26, 2024, on Disney+.
Karmma Calling is a seven-episode-long show that covers the life of Indrani Kothari, the matriarch who used to be a superstar in the Hindi film industry. Her life post-marriage to the rich businessman Kaushal Kothari led her to move to Alibaug and become a part of the elite group living lavishly by the seaside. The director of ‘Karmma Calling’ Ruchi Narain has opened up on casting Namrata Sheth for the role of Karma Talwar, and shared that it was very tricky to cast for this character.
Karma Talwar and Ahaan Kothari’s (played by Varun Sood) love interest is known for her wit and her mysterious character which is very layered and when director Ruchi was casting for the part — this is exactly what she looked out for — a person who was the perfect blend of these qualities.
Talking about casting Namrata, Ruchi said: “The casting of Karma Talwar’s character was very tricky. In the story her character does some of the most unsympathetic and unfavourable things.”
“The casting director showed me one shot of Namrata where she was looking over her shoulder and I was just mesmerised. When I saw her test I realised what drew me to her in that photograph.

The most difficult scenes to shoot are those when there is a hilarious moment, but the actors have to control their laughter. While being fun for actors, this can usually become a challenge for a director, especially when it’s a high pressure situation.

Decades before MeToo became an official platform, Jodie Foster's Oscar-winning act in the 1988 film "The Accused" had already tried initiating a conversation along the line that a woman cannot be slut-shamed or victim-blamed for a sexual assault or rape on her, no matter what. In India, a few years back, we had the brilliant "Pink", which underlined the maxim that, when a woman says so, no means no.
"Guilty", touted as the brainchild of an all-women creative, tries discussing the conversation through a story of rape allegation set against the backdrop of MeToo, which makes it relevant. Any film that attempts to talk to the audience on this subject should be deemed important, and that is despite its cinematic merit or the lack of it.
Yet, as "Guilty" highlights its message, you somehow are left with the impression that, instead of charting a new course, the makers are happy...

Guilty(Netflix)
Starring Kiara Advani, Akansha Ranjan, Gurfateh Singh Pirzada,Taher Shabbir
Directed by Ruchi Narain
31 years ago in Jonathan Kaplan’s The Accused, Jodie Foster played a girl who is gang-raped in a bar because…well…she asked for it.
Now it’s debutant Akansha Ranjan, impressively in-character, playing a campus libertine from Jharkhand who comes on too strongly with our rape-accused hero the popular Vijay Pratap Singh (Gurfateh Singh Pirzada) during a rock concert that rocks the gender boat violently. Did the aggressively in-your-face Tanu “ask for it”?
Director Ruchi Narain, returning to feature –film direction after 2005’s interesting but fractured Kal, Yesterday & Tomorrow, offers no easy solutions, as there are none. That a rape has indeed been committed is unclear until the devastating finale where, during a love concert, we finally get to know the truth because…well…there was an eyewitness. Luckily it was male. Because,...

ReviewThe new Netflix film directed by Ruchi Narain tells the story of a college campus rape.Saraswati DatarFacebookIf I have to sum it up in a sentence, Guilty is what would happen if Anurag Kashyap directed Student of the Year. A college campus story where youngsters drink, smoke, party and aspire for Rhodes scholarships but seldom study is all straight out of the Dharma textbook. Only by virtue of being made for the internet (through Netflix), director Ruchi Narain and her co-writer Kanika Dhillon create a darker, grungier space where students also do drugs, wear goth-inspired torn clothing and sport tattoos while likening friends to penises and pubic hair. So far, so bold. Guilty is set in St Martins College, Delhi University where Tanu (Akansha Ranjan Kapoor) accuses VJ aka the college heartthrob (Gurfateh Pirzada) of raping her on Valentine’s Day, and uses the hashtag #MeToo in her tweet...

From Dhundiraj Govind Phalke’s 1915 stop-motion “The Game of Match Sticks” to Green Gold Animation’s May 10 3D stereoscopic release “Chhota Bheem Kung Fu Dhamaka,” Indian animation has been around for more than a 100 years.
The sector grew 10% in 2018 to a value of $272 million, per a 2019 Ey report, and is poised to reach $353 million by 2021. India has some 300 animation studios, but the majority of them are engaged in creating content for television, which accounts for 65% of the Indian toon market.
Animated feature films make up just 15% of the sector. From the highs of 2012 and 2013, with 10 toon features produced in each of those two years, to 2017, in which just one, Ruchi Narain’s “Hanuman Da’ Damdaar,” featuring the voice talent of Bollywood superstar Salman Khan was released, it has been a steep drop. 2018 was marginally better with four releases.

Ruchi Narain the writer and director of Hanuman Da Damdaar that animation films are certainly not child’s play.
When you are making a film for children, we must realise that just blasting them with fun isn’t enough, quick limericks and masti doesn’t make a children’s film. You have to consider it like any other feature film and give it your all.
When R.A.T. Films decided to delve into Hanuman Dadamdaar, an animation film they refused to take short cuts. “We recorded the soundtrack in Los Angeles, I don’t think anyone other than the makers of Sairaat have done that. We had the team who works with Hans Zimmer do the score and the live recordings happened in his studio. It is our dedication to give our best to the film, and when you are committed to doing that, you cannot compromise,” quipped the spokesperson for R.

For a good year, director Ruchi Narain didn’t tell anyone that the film they were working on had none other than Salman Khan in it….
It is a big deal to rope in an actor like Salman Khan for a film. While most other directors would be screaming the news from the rooftops, writer-director Ruchi Narain decided to keep the news all to herself.
“We dubbed first, and animation takes ages in the making because there are so many levels of pre-production work that I thought it best to not discuss anything initially… or maybe it just took that long for the fact that he did it to sink in! Naturally, we were brimming with excitement but we didn’t even tell the other actors associated with the film that Salman Khan has already dubbed his part and is playing the titular role. The most nostalgic anthem of our childhood, ‘Lakdi ki kaathi’ was launched in an incredibly Damdaar way today in the presence of cast and crew of Hanuman Da Damdaar. Vinay Pathak, Chunky Pandey, director Ruchi Narain and producers Taher Shabbir and Ashutosh Shah made certain the event was nostalgic and yet, fun as they shared anecdotes from their film.
The song was launched by original kaathi girl, Urmila Matondkar, who could not help but be overwhelmed by the moment and the new song. Speaking about the new upbeat number, Urmila said, “This version of Lakdi ki Kaathi will be the new age anthem, hats off to the Hanuman Da Damdaar team to bring this song back.”

Mothers are special but so are dads, and Rat Films is all set to bring you the most adorable parent-child story through Hanuman Da Damdaar. No, not in real life but a character he will be playing in Ruchi Narain’s animated movie Hanuman Da Damdaar. When Chunky was a child his mother used to dress him up as a girl for a long time, because she had wanted a girl. As a result, Chunky has been in touch with his feminine side which came very handy. As the actor morphed into the character Nazuk Guide, for the crazy, fun, cool – Hanuman franchise, he claims it is his inherent feminine side that helped.

We are so glad that the trailer of our film will be releasing with such a popular franchise,” expressed the spokesperson at R.A.T. Films.
If that was not all, a little birdie tells us that there might be a surprise for your kids at the theatres, don’t believe us ask Popat Sharma from Hanuman Da Damdaar.
Popat Sharma is albeit a fictional reporter in writer-director Ruchi Narain’s upcoming venture, it doesn’t stop...

Salman Khan has made the character of elder Hanuman of his own for whom he has lent the voice in Ruchi Narain’s animated film Hanuman Da Damdaar.
The director recently revealed that they discussed scenes with the actor, who gave plenty of inputs, before he dubbed for the part. “You always remember Salman’s lines from his movies,” says Ruchi. “Working with him, you realise that he’s not only a big star, but also being Salim Khan saab’s son, he knows what works and he takes the dialogues to the next level,” she further adds.
The actor’s popular dialogues have been incorporated in the film like ‘Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di…” from Wanted and a few other dialogues too.
Interestingly, one of the most endearing scenes in the film features Hanuman and Valmiki, wherein the latter tells the former, ‘Tum aaj bhi dil se bachche ho.

We agree this Bollywood beauty doesn’t look like she could ever pass off as Hanuman’s mom but here is the catch – she won’t be in the film at all! Bamboozled? Well, we are talking about an animated film called Hanuman Da Damdaar, where both Salman Khan and Raveena Tandon will be giving voice overs to the animated characters in the film.
While Salman will be portraying the grown up Hanuman with a heart of gold, Raveena Tandon will be essaying the role of little Hanuman’s mother. What a coup really!
“The film is all about young Hanuman’s journey into becoming who he was meant to be, but at first he will be shown as any other kid which will make the kids relate a lot with him,” shared our source.

Salman Khan has lent his voice to the grown-up Hanuman in the film, which has been written and directed by Ruchi Narain. On the occasion of Hanuman Jayanti, the motion poster of the animation film, ‘Hanuman Da Damdaar’, was released.
Scheduled to release on May 19, the film narrates the story of a young Hanuman. It begins at a point much before he meets Lord Ram — a time when he was oblivious of his strength, mettle and purpose in life. Ruchi says, “It was while working out the release calendar that we realised that our first look launch was coinciding with Hanuman Jayanti. With this kind of blessing, we’re sure this summer will be truly damdaar.”...

While his film Bajrangi Bhaijaan went on to become a record breaking success, Salman Khan once again turned Bajrangi for an animation film recently. The actor has lent his voice to the character of adult Hanuman in the animated film Hanuman Da Damdaar. From what we hear, Ruchi Narain, writer of films like Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi, approached Salman Khan asking him to lend his voice for this mythology based animated film and it seems that he readily agreed for it. Revealing details of the dubbing session with the superstar, Ruchi stated that she was left rather impressed with the kind of improvisations that Salman Khan could bring to the table and was also all praises for the actor's sense of humour. Talking about the film, she mentioned that legend of Hanumad Ramayan, which according to her has lost its essence, was what inspired her to make a film on Lord Bajrang bali.
