The story everyone knows about the rise of the Mp3 and the end of the CD gold rush is a good one. It’s got Metallica and Dr. Dre, Sean Parker and the RIAA, Napster, Kazaa, Limewire, and the record industry’s flabbergasting decision to sue its own fans. But the real story, or arguably the most nuanced and fascinating one, lies elsewhere with a bunch of young computer wizzes scattered across the country and a handful of crafty, underpaid factory workers in Shelby, North Carolina.

Daft Punk is a duo that hardly needs an introduction. From Grammy-winning hit songs like "Get Lucky" to their work on soundtracks to blockbuster movies like "Tron: Legacy," the electronic musicians have conquered the world. But long before Hollywood came calling, the French beat-makers got a boost from the folks at Cartoon Network. Specifically, when the band's anime-inspired music videos aired on Toonami.
Complex did a deep-dive into the history of the anime-focused gamble that was Toonami back in 2017. While the programming block certainly helped give anime a profile boost in the U.S., it also helped out several popular musical acts, Daft Punk among them. As Toonami co-creator Jason DeMarco explained at the time, the duo reached out to them when they were in the midst of premiering an ambitious music video project titled "Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem" tied to their second studio album,...

The 2010 science fiction action film directed by Joseph Kosinski, Tron: Legacy, was a box office hit. Starring Garrett Hedlund, Jeff Bridges, and Olivia Wilde, the film is a direct sequel to Tron (1982), and is directed by Steven Lisberger. Made 28 years after the first movie, Tron: Legacy made up in visuals and sound what it lacked in story. The movie was also nominated for an Oscar that year in the Best Sound Editing category, but lost to Richard King for Inception.
A still from Tron: Legacy
Recently, Disney announced a sequel to the 2010 movie, Tron: Ares, which is scheduled for a 2025 release. The third film in the franchise is being directed by Joachim Rønning, with Jared Leto in the lead, who will also serve as a producer.

Pharrell Williams reacts to hearing a completed “Get Lucky” for the first time in the 10th anniversary Random Access Memories video documenting Daft Punk’s classic 2013 LP.

If we’d have to guess which two questions Daft Punk have probably been asked the most, we’d go with: “Why did you break up?” followed by “Why the robot helmets?” The French house duo, who called it called it quits in February 2021, are famously rarely interviewed, but Thomas Bangalter offered a little insight to the inner workings of Daft Punk — and being “relieved” that the era is over — on a recent episode of BBC’s The First Time with Matt Everett podcast.
Bangalter previously gave a kind of vague explanation for why Daft Punk broke up, saying that “the last thing I would want to be, in the world we live in, in 2023, is a robot.” Speaking with host Everett, he dug deeper into his and bandmate Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo’s relationship with their art.

If you’ve ever wondered when it was that Michel Gondry, the gifted French director of “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” became the world’s most annoying filmmaker, you might say the answer is, “He always was.” Yet no one, including me, quite thinks of him that way. That’s because the few works of his that have come to prominence possess a special combination of facility and charm. I adore “Eternal Sunshine,” a virtuoso movie that bends your brain and breaks your heart at the same time. You might simply choose to characterize it as the masterpiece of screenwriter Charlie Kaufman, but the truth is that Gondry directed it — the leaps in time, the emotionally convulsive performances of Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet — with a masterful sense of play and gravitational control.

Leiji Matsumoto, the popular Japanese manga and anime artist known for his work with Daft Punk, has died at the age of 85.
Among his many works, Matsumoto created the popular manga series Space Pirate Captain Harlock. In an interview, Daft Punk’s Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo cited the manga as one of their biggest early influences. “At around the age of 5 years old, we would watch Captain Harlock,” they explained. “The music we have been making must have been influenced at some point by the shows we were watching when we were little kids.”

After years of anticipation, Disney is gearing up to return to the Grid with a third installment in the Tron film series. The sci-fi action franchise has seen various actors in the main cast since the original movie hit theaters in 1982. But this time around, fans are not happy to learn who’s slated to take the lead role in the third film, Tron: Ares.

The original Tron starred Jeff Bridges as Kevin Flynn, a video designer transported into his game design. According to The Hollywood Reporter, “The film was not considered a box office success, earning 33 million (around 100 million today), but it was admired for its groundbreaking visual effects and remained in the public consciousness for years to come,...

Having gone to artists running the gamut from The Beatles to Billie Eilish, the Grammy for Album of the Year is one that every artist wishes to win. It’s one thing to be recognized for a particular song, but being honored for the best body of work of the year can often mean much more, especially to artists who truly focus on the art of creating a complete cohesive album. This year the biggest story is the rematch between Adele and Beyoncé, but there may be some possible upsets brewing.
Adele’s “30” is definitely one of the front-runners here. Her Grammy track record is perhaps the most impressive of any artist ever; she has only lost three awards out of 18 previous nominations, and she went undefeated for both “21” and “25.” This year could be a little different, though, considering that “30” wasn’t necessarily the cultural phenomenon that those previous two albums were.

The franchise’s last outing in 2010 was a dud, and the actor has Oscar pedigree when not preoccupied with his band. It’s all rather mysterious
Some Hollywood news reports just don’t add up. “Tom Cruise to star in Top Gun 3” – well yes, obviously. “James Cameron to keep making weirder and weirder Avatar sequels until he’s in his 90s” – yep, inevitably. “Tron 3 moving forward with Jared Leto” – ahem, really? The article in the Hollywood Reporter this week poses far more questions than it answers.
Why is Disney going ahead with Tron 3 when 2010’s feeble Tron: Legacy was hardly a box office or critical smash, despite rehiring Jeff Bridges, spending millions on CGI and getting Daft Punk to do the soundtrack? Is it really a good idea to expand the world of the geeky cult classic 1982 original into a macro-universe of shiny digital pixels? Well, that one...

The awkwardly titled gay rugby romance “In from the Side” is so padded out at 134 minutes with both rugby games and sex scenes that the final effect is numbing, and writer-director Matt Carter doesn’t bother much with either plot or character to fill out his narrative.
Mark (Alexander Lincoln) is a member of the South London Stags, which is thought of as the B-team of a gay London Rugby Club. Before you can hum “Some Enchanted Evening,” he locks eyes from across a crowded room with Warren (Alexander King), a cocky guy who plays on what is considered the A-team.
While out at a nightclub with fellow team members, Mark makes eye contact with Warren again, and Warren buys them some tequila shots. Confident in his approach, Warren licks Mark’s hand in a suggestive manner, and they banter on the dance floor and share a kiss before Mark...

Update, writethru: With an estimated 58.2 of the vote, Emmanuel Macron has been reelected as President of France, defeating extreme right National Rally leader Marine Le Pen who amassed 41.8. Macron now becomes the eighth French incumbent to win a second term.
Coming into today’s final round of the election, independent centrist Macron was leading in the polls, but throughout her campaign, Le Pen had gained momentum compared to the first time the two faced off in 2017. Today marked the second runoff between candidates from parties other than the traditional left and right.
Voter abstention today was estimated at 28.7, according to media reports. This is higher than in 2017, and is also more than the first round of voting two weeks ago. However, it is not a record breaker.

Alessandro Melazzini approaches the subject of 80s pop dance music from a particular perspective.
Born in Sondrio, Lombardy, the Italian documentarian, who has filmed both nuns and porn stars, is based in Germany and was trained as an economist and philosopher, and also worked as a cultural journalist and translator.
“My previous documentary was about Cistercians,” says the director of “Italo Disco,” which just screened in its world premiere at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival. “My second-last one was on porno star-turned-politician Ilona Staller, a.k.a. The founder of Alpenway Media, Melazzini has produced films from “The Italian Character” to “Our Stone” while also often working as a director.

Contemporary filmmakers clearly have an enormous bee in their bonnet for the coming-of-age film and poetic youth memoir—even Steven Spielberg is currently getting in on the action with his cutely named The Fabelmans, reminiscing on his Eisenhower-era boyhood in Arizona. There are a handful of potential explanations for this: the adjacent popularity of autofiction (that modish literary form initially popularised in France) has found authors—from Norway’s Knausgaard to Ferrante in Naples—deep-mining their own backstories, reinventing what we know to be realism. So there’s something in the air. Can it also be the self-publicising spree of social media platforms? For this writer’s money, climate anxiety seems relevant: the urge to preserve, to scan past memories before a great erasure. Even James Gray, often impervious to fashion, is setting up Armageddon Time, about his upbringing in ‘80s Queens.
This is all eternally relevant for Paolo Sorrentino’s new film,...

Daft Punk, the widely celebrated and influential electronic duo, have broken up.
The group announced the decision via an eight-minute sequence, dubbed “Epilogue,” taken from their 2006 film, Electroma, in which two robots — meant to represent band members Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo and Thomas Bangalter — venture into a desert where one gets blown up. An image of two robot hands forming a triangle then flashes on-screen with the time-stamp: 1993-2021.
Kathryn Frazier, Daft Punk’s longtime representative, confirmed the breakup to Rolling Stone but declined to provide any details on the split.

The pandemic ensures that the Weeknd’s halftime performance at the Super Bowl will be like none before. And in a brief interview for the NFL Network posted Thursday, he revealed another break with tradition: There will be no special guest.
Asked by sportscaster Kay Adams, he laughs and shakes his head before saying: “I’ve been reading a lot of rumors… I wouldn’t bet on it. There wasn’t any room to fit it in the narrative, in the story I was telling in the performance. So yeah. There’s no special guests.”

Stephanie O’Keefe has been elected president of the American Federation of Musicians Local 47, becoming the first woman president in the union’s 123-year history. John Acosta, who served three two-year terms as president, did not seek re-election. In the local’s other elections, Danita Ng-Poss has been elected secretary-treasurer – the first person of Asian descent to serve as a titled officer of the union – and Rick Baptist has been re-elected to a fourth term as vice president.
“I am honored to be elected president of Local 47,” said O’Keefe, a professional French hornist. “It has been a goal of mine for many, many years to be an advocate for my fellow musicians. If we could describe the 2021 Grammys in one word, it’d be “unexpected.” The odds-on favorite to sweep the general field (The Weeknd) was completely shut out, and out of those top races the Album of the Year category might’ve been the most shocking of all, with Fiona Apple’s “Fetch the Bolt Cutters” and Harry Styles’s “Fine Line” also among the top contenders that were snubbed. But perhaps the silver lining of it all is that those snubs came in favor of a couple of interesting and challenging nominees from the academy, particularly Jacob Collier’s “Djesse Vol. 3,” and Black Pumas’ self-titled deluxe edition album.

Insomniac Games finally showcased Spider-Man: Miles Morales‘ gameplay in an exciting extended sequence that aired during the recent PlayStation showcase.
It primarily features a large bridge battle that sees Miles face a well-equipped group of thugs who clearly know Daft Punk’s costume designers. Most of the combat will likely feel familiar to anyone who played Marvel’s Spider-Man for PS4, as we see Miles utilize a combination of melee attacks and spider skills to take down his foes. Eagle-eyed fans may spot a few new abilities, but the basic flow of this action sequences really hammers home that this is more of a large expansion than a fully-fledged sequel.
That’s not to say that there’s nothing new. It’s clear that Miles is moving on with his life since the events of the previous game, and we even catch a glimpse of what seems to be his new home in Harlem.

Disney don’t exactly make small movies. While most other studios tend to strike a balance between mega-budget blockbusters and more cost-effective fare, in recent years, the Mouse House have focused almost exclusively on huge projects designed to dominate the box office and little else.
With brands like the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Star Wars, Pixar, a steady stream of live-action remakes of their animated classics and now a whole host of big-name Fox properties under their umbrella, the all-conquering overlords of entertainment clearly don’t have much interest in funding prestige dramas or mid-budget genre films.
One Disney franchise that’s long been rumored for another reboot is Tron, despite both a sequel to 2010’s Legacy and a Disney Plus series both having fallen by the wayside. The last movie may have earned $400 million globally, but didn’t do the numbers Disney were expecting given the $170 million budget.

Along with Sade albums, new Daft Punk music is among the rarest of the rarities in contemporary music — and while it’s not a new album proper, Italian film director Dario Argento revealed in an interview with Repubblica that the duo has reached out to him to collaborate on his next film, “Occhiali Neri” (aka “Black Glasses”).
“They are my admirers, they know all my cinema,” Argento says, according to a translated version in The Film Stage. “They heard from French friends that I was shooting a new film and called me [to say], ‘We want to work with you.’” He adds they will be sending him the first tracks soon and make a visit to Rome when it’s possible to travel, while also noting the duo think his script is one of his “most interesting.”

Daft Punk is returning to the world of original movie scores for the first time in a decade thanks to Dario Argento’s upcoming crime film “Black Glasses.” The “Suspiria” director confirmed to Repubblica (via The Film Stage) that the Grammy Award-winning electronic music duo would be composing the music for the movie, which marks Argento’s return to feature filmmaking after an eight year hiatus. “They are my admirers, they know all my cinema,” Argento said about Daft Punk. “They heard from French friends that I was shooting a new film and called me [to say], ‘We want to work with you.’”
According to Argento, Daft Punk is currently writing music for the project and will be sending over demos in the near future. The filmmaker is expecting the musicians to travel to Italy once it becomes safe to do so in order for all of them to work on the project together.

A new film from Italian horror master Dario Argento is always cause for celebration. Sure, much of his recent work hasn’t quite lived up to the classics of his past, including “Suspiria,” “Deep Red,” and “Inferno,” but no matter what, if Argento releases a new film, there are legions of fans that will line up to view it. And for his next film, “Black Glasses,” it appears that he’s going to entice many more fans by teaming up with Daft Punk for the film’s music.

“I wanted the film to provide kind of a vicarious experience,” says Chris Perkel, director and producer of the documentary “Coachella: 20 Years in the Desert,” confirming that there’s absolutely nothing coincidental about the film’s debut today coinciding with what would have been day one of Coachella 2020.
“We obviously debated what to do with the release of the film once the festival was rescheduled for October,” he says, but ultimately YouTube Originals decided to only move the release date back a week and a half, from March 31 to April 10, with the idea that the doc could serve as a salve on a weekend when passholders may be particularly nursing the postponement blues. “With all of us staying indoors, and under a lot of stress, we thought that might be more valuable than ever,” Perkel says.
It’s technically 19 years in the desert outside of Palm Springs, as longtime devotees may recall.

Exclusive: Thirteen-time Grammy winner and two-time Oscar nominee Pharrell Williams has signed on to produce the Mikey Alfred-directed drama North Hollywood, which is billed as being the first movie ever about becoming a pro skateboarder.

Williams will produce with Mimi Valdés, Malcolm Washington, Kevin Turen, Harrison Kreiss, and Carmen Cuba. North Hollywood stars Ryder McLaughlin, Aramis Hudson, Nico Hiraga, Miranda Cosgrove, Angus Cloud and Vince Vaughn.

Whether it’s because of endless delays, fan demands, a director’s passion project or a cash grab reboot that seemingly no one ever actually wanted, Hollywood has produced an enormous amount of sequels to beloved films full decades after they originally hit theaters. Some of them have been wildly successful with critics and audiences, and others we’re just pretending never existed. Here are some of the sequels that took forever to hit the screen.
“Bad Boys For Life” (2020)
There had been talk for years about getting the boys back together, and the reunion finally happened this year, with Will Smith and Martin Lawrence teaming up for one last ride. This time however Adil El Arbi and Bilall Fallah are taking over directing duties from Michael Bay.
George Miller took nearly 30 years to follow up “Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome” with the Tom Hardy-Charlize Theron thriller “Mad Max: Fury Road.

For Gandhi Jayanti 2019 Bollywood brings the mega blockbuster War. Starring Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff they take on a student-teacher dynamic as super agents of the James Bond variety, sometimes fighting each other, sometimes joining together to save the world. Produced by Aditya Chopra, directed by Siddharth Anand, its release marks a new level in both action as well as visual styles for action. But it must not be forgotten that these two actors are dancers unmatched in Bollywood, so there must be a good soundtrack to go with all the power visuals. For this Vishal-Shekhar have been asked to define a 5 song very short album, just enough to show off what needs showing off.
Ghungroo is the centrepiece song… all the interviews have been about this song; all the interest musically has centred around this smooth Daft Punk-esque sound. A tropical paradise, Hrithik with Vaani Kapoor, sex practically in the air…...

Sheryl Crow has been a Grammy darling over the years, winning nine awards including Best New Artist and Record of the Year (“All I Wanna Do”) in 1995. But she has only been nominated once for Album of the Year: “The Globe Sessions” (1999). That was her third studio album. Can she now return to the Grammy lineup with her upcoming 11th album, “Threads”? It may be the recording academy’s last chance to give her the top prize.

An overstretched film producer shoots himself in the head when the bank refuses to extend him the credit he needs for his latest movie, leaving his widow to finish the project. A mediocre French DJ fritters away the best 20 years of his life before coming to grips with the fact that he’ll never be Daft Punk. A middle-aged professor doesn’t know what to do with herself after her husband leaves her for a younger woman; she’s not unhappy so much as burdened by the unbearable lightness of freedom.
